Mann + Hummel Sales Internship : Experiential Reflection SIP
9 p.In the summer of 2023, I was an intern at Mann+Hummel, a manufacturer of liquid and filters. As a senior business major at Kalamazoo College, I am required to complete a Senior Integrated Project. To fulfill that requirement, I will reflect on my experience, the knowledge I gained, and how I integrated prior class knowledge at Mann+Hummel during my internship. Having the ability to see through business concepts outside of the classroom and in the corporate world allowed me to gain a new perspective and useful insights for my future in business. I will elaborate on how courses assisted me with gaining an understanding on marketing strategies, advertising and promotion of a company, consumer behavior, and different communication and relationships within the business. Throughout the summer, I found myself making direct correlations to activities and lectures from class, to the operations and tasks I completed within Mann+Hummel. This essay demonstrates the significant impact that Kalamazoo College academic learning has on the relationship between new experiences in the business world
Whisper the Worship, Scream the Sins
xiv, 41 p.Introducing her collection of poems, the author writes “My SIP came around as a critical analysis of societal structure through the feminist theory lens while using my religious background and Greek Gods & Goddesses’ myths and character to express my own experiences and who I possibly am. I wanted this collection to almost act like a manifesto against the societal structure women are put under and I want to drive apart the patriarchy structure that we put ourselves into.
I Love You, Bro
6 p.As a tribute to my friend, "I Love You, Bro" immortalizes the laughter and enduring spirit of a cherished friend in the Franklin community. As the film makes its way to audiences, it carries a blend of vulnerability and hope. Vulnerability in the personal narrative and hope that others may find resonance with their own stories in this shared experience. "I Love You, Bro" is not only a story displayed on a screen, it serves as a bridge between personal grief and shared understanding, underscoring the profound capability of art to transcend individual experiences and resonate universally. In conclusion, the emotional impact of creating "I Love You, Bro" extends far beyond the confines of the film reel, serving as a testament to the therapeutic potential of artistic expression, the resilience of the human spirit, and the enduring power of storytelling. As this narrative takes flight beyond the screen, my sincere wish is that its emotional resonance finds a place in the hearts of those who witness its unfolding—an homage, a celebration, and an enduring journey of love and loss
The Effect of Minority Status on Mental Health Perceptions: The Intersectionality Between Race and Mental Health
1 broadside. 48"W x 36"HRacial minorities are less likely to receive quality and appropriate accessibility to mental health resources. This study focuses on how the previous factors may affect an adolescent's perception of mental health and accessibility to resources. The study was completed using a focus group design under Morgan’s (1996) general guidelines and Josselson’s interview strategies (2013). Strauss’ grounded theory (1987) served as the basis of analysis for the focus groups. Five major themes were presented within the five focus groups including generational trauma, first- generational pressure, lack of support, external influences, and gender identity.Kalamazoo College. Department of Psychology. VanLiere Symposium, 202
Exploring the Physical Therapy Field at DHR
1 Broadside. 48"W x 36"HI was able to shadow DPT Jesus Martinez from DHR Health Orthopedic and Sports Therapy Institute in Edinburg, Texas. I was not hands-on due to the institute of DHR’s protocols, but my shadowing experience consisted of working with several patients with different injuries. I learned how to initially address patients with distinct injuries, what to look for during rehabilitation sessions, and how to critically think of which exercises are best suited for the patient’s injury. My shadowing experience confirmed for me that I want to enter this field and learn more about it.Kalamazoo College. Department of Biology. Diebold Symposium, 202
A Summary and Reflection of Entrepreneurship 103 : Show Me the Money and Exercising Leadership: Foundational Principles.
16 p.Over the summer and fall, I enrolled and completed two courses to further my understanding of the field of business. The first class I participated in was an MIT course Entrepreneurship 103: Show me the money. I also took a Harvard course Exercising Leadership: Foundational Principles. This project serves as both a reflective journey and a forward-looking exploration. It serves as a bridge between the knowledge I have acquired during my time at Kalamazoo College and the aspirations I hold for my future. It brings together the diverse threads of my academic coursework, extracurricular involvement, and personal interests, weaving them into a cohesive tapestry that signifies not just academic achievement, but the embodiment of my passions and aspirations
Online Skills-building Experience
7 p.For my Online skills building experience I took a total of three courses: Business Writing, Professional Skills for International Business, and Excel Skills for Business: Essentials. All of these have been of great value and have complemented my studies at this institution. I have acquired several skills that are essential for my career in Business
Exploring a Sponge-Derived Leucobacter sp. as a Potential Source for Antibiotics
vi,14 p.Antibiotic resistance is a rising global health concern. Many of the current antibiotics produced by microorganisms are derived from well researched bacteria such as the genus Streptomyces. Though Streptomyces is a remarkable source of potential therapeutics and should be continued to be studied, studying predominantly this genus limits the diversity of chemical structures and scaffolds to be discovered. This urges a call to diversify the bacteria currently being studied to produce or inspire novel natural product scaffolds. In the current study, we isolated a Leucobacter sp. from a freshwater sponge in the Apostle Islands which was grown on a large scale and the secondary metabolites were extracted for compound isolation and characterization. As an understudied bacterial genus, which it is characterized as a genus with fewer than five papers that report a secondary metabolite, Leucobacter sp. has the potential to offer unique chemical scaffolds. Utilizing spectrometric techniques, we were able to dereplicate the secondary metabolites extracted using the DEREPLICATOR tool available on GNPS, which indicating no known antibiotics present. This suggests that there could be new antibacterial secondary metabolites that have not previously been discovered or studied. Analyzed LC/MS q-TOF data shows a molecule with the MW of 1268 m/z. HPLC and NMR spectroscopy experiments are currently in progress to isolate and characterize this compound and others present in the extract. We hope to obtain bioactivity data once isolation and characterizitaion is accomplished. This study into the Leucobacter isolate could exhibit new chemical spaces and broaden our knowledge of secondary metabolites and novel scaffolds derived from the Leucobacter sp. that can be used in the fight against antibiotic resistance
Engineering and Parallelizing Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) Image Environment Viewing Engine (SIEVE)
36 p.In the summer of 2023 spanning the months of May – August, I had the pleasure of working for Maxar Technologies (Maxar), a company in the GEOINT and Space sector. During my time working for Maxar I was tasked with aiding in the engineering and development of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) Environment Viewer Engine (SIEVE). SIEVE is a program meant to replace another proprietary technology used for analyzing and viewing SAR. SAR images are most commonly distributed in TIFF, SIDD, and SICD file formats, which are large image files that contain metadata information on the images taken. These formats are used in practice for extremely large images with lots of metadata as well. This caused a few issues in the speed and efficiency of the program when loading in the images for analysis. Prior to this summer, I engaged in coursework relating to using parallelization techniques to maximize efficiency in programs. This is where the motivation to then utilize this opportunity to conduct research on parallelizing these loading processes. Through this, there were not drastic improvements to the speed and efficiency of the program, but there were improvements, nonetheless. Aside from this, I learned and aided in constructing the application as a whole
