Reflection: Summer Internship at a Behavior Management Nonprofit Organization
No full textiii, 16 p.For my Experiential SIP 593, I worked as an intern for Tuesday’s Child’s (TC) summer camp. TC is a nonprofit that helps families who have a child experiencing behavioral issues. My time at TC was approximately 262 hours, which are logged in time sheets (see Appendices A and B). During this time, I reflected on my experiences with the children, relevant content from my course work at Kalamazoo College, and my future career plans. This internship was beneficial because I learned TC’s techniques on positive behavior management intervention, attended weekly supervision with their child psychologist, and explored my career interests

Problem: Communication is a persistent barrier in healthcare settings, particularly for minority patients. EHR systems do not account for patient preferences, values, and beliefs. This creates a disconnect between patients and providers, leading to patient dissatisfaction with the quality and consistency of care.

Differential loop analysis of phenotypically and genetically juxtaposed mouse strains using visualization tools

Mice strains C57BL/6 (BLK6) and DBA/2J (DBA) have differential gene expression in fear and anxiety genes. Experiments to isolate these differences, however, are laborious time-consuming.
Computational Framework: Hi-C data and single-cell data modalities all describe differential expression in slightly different ways. Data collected using Hi-C bulk and single-cell sequencing.

No full text12 p.A&M (Alvarez and Marsal) was created in a small office in New York City by Tony Alvarez (Co-CEO) II and Bryan Marsal (Co-CEO) in 1983. They focused on merging their operations together, performance improvement and value creation to best help companies turn areas of stagnation into growth to achieve sustainable results. During my time there this summer, the company celebrated 40 years. They started this company in a small office in New York City, barely making it by the first year with just 3 people at the company. Today, they have over 77 offices across 35 countries, 8,000 employees, and have become a multi-billion dollar company that specializes in over 15 different industries. I worked at A&M’s Headquarters this summer on Madison Avenue in Midtown, just a few short blocks from central park. Living in New York was a whole different experience for me, and being away from home with such a responsibility gave me a glimpse at life after college. Working alongside people much older than me gave me a sense of confidence and allowed me to apply the skills I’ve learned at K firsthand

The Servant Problem in the United States
No full text103 p.Throughout the nineteenth and well into the twentieth centuries, many upper and middle class households in the United States employed servants, but just as often, they complained about “the servant problem,” namely their perceived inability to find servants or ones that worked to their satisfaction. The concept hence became a common idea in the popular consciousness, with references to it and opinions about it being frequently proffered in popular media, including newspaper and magazine articles, satirical cartoons, and film. The purpose of this primary source collection is to show the variety of opinions offered on the so-called “servant problem” in the media, particularly popular media, while contextualizing them in a way that allows the reader to easily understand them. Though the opinions presented in popular media did not necessarily reflect the situation in an accurate way, describing the actual causes and issues behind the servant problem is not the focus of this collection. The purpose of this project is to contextualize and understand the opinions presented in newspapers, magazines, and other media. This primary source collection will be specifically focused on the period between 1880 and 1946. Though the concept of “the servant problem” had originated long before the late nineteenth century and it continued to persist after the Second World War, much of the popular discourse on the subject dates from this period. This project also allows for an exploration of the changes brought about by the First World War, the Great Depression, and the Second World War, which contributed to the decline of domestic service (after an initial exacerbation of the issue) as well as the eventual disappearance of the concept from the popular consciousness as many ceased to employ servants. This collection will be focused exclusively on the United States. Though popular discourse and complaints about “the servant problem” were equally prevalent in Great Britain, the context of this issue, especially in regards to class dynamics, was somewhat different
A Failed System : Barriers to Health and Healthcare for People Experiencing Houselessness
No full text60 p.Health and housing are inextricably linked. People experiencing houselessness face complex barriers to health and healthcare in the United States. This review uses the term ‘houseless’ or ‘unhoused’ over ‘homeless’ to recognize that though someone might not have a traditional structural shelter in which they reside, they are not necessarily without a home; at the same time, someone who might have shelter does not necessarily have a home. This highlights the diversity of lived experiences. In this paper, existing literature regarding healthcare for the unhoused in the following areas is reviewed: information access and accessibility, transportation, stigma and sense of belonging, and trusting one’s healthcare providers. This is not a complete list of barriers nor are these barriers unique to people experiencing houselessness. Analyzing the creation and perpetuation of this barriers provides a steppingstone to understand how systematic failures of our healthcare system affect underserved communities. In the face of systemic cracks, free clinics have been operating within equity-based frameworks, serving as the safety-net of American healthcare. I turned the parts I could into a sort of handbook of sorts, but for some portions such as the CES certification and Python, it would be a disservice to condense all of that information into a setting like this. You may notice that some of the course names are in Spanish, do not worry, my work on them is in English, I included those because my main interest after graduation is international business especially in Latin America, I also figured it would be interesting to compare some of the business practices of Latin America and Spain to those that we use in the United States
Synthesis of Plasmenyl PC and PE Polar Lipids
No full text46 P.Plasmalogens are a type of polar lipid that are found naturally throughout the human body. These compounds are categorized as plasmalogens by a vinyl ether bond and an ester linked fatty acid chain. The plasmalogens in this study consist of the arachidonic, docosahexaenoic, and adrenic acid substituted species. Recent research has linked these plasmalogens to degenerative diseases which opens up their potential as biomarkers and new theraputics. This research synthesized each of these compounds in their glycerophosphoryl-ethanolamine (PE) and glycerophosphoryl-choline (PC) forms. Areas of this synthesis were explored, focusing on optimizing steps, success in the PC to PE conversion, and creating new plasmalogens. The PC to PE conversion step is notable because it uses an enzymatic reaction, transphosphatidylation, with phospholipase-D to cleave at the choline head and turn it into an ethanolamine head. This step was a concern with the low stability of the vinyl ether bond. This research proves this to be a promising method for the creation of these compounds
Dental and Chemical Applications of Various Fillings
No full text17 p.Imagine a usual trip to the dentist's office. You are always reminded to brush better and to actually floss but if you are a part of around 90% of adults over the age of 20 or about 57% of adolescents under the age of 19, chances are you have had a cavity in your lifetime (Kaczor, 3). Typically these are caused by lack of proper brushing or hygiene and can lead to discomfort in the mouth or small holes within a tooth. If not treated properly cavities, or dental caries as they are often called, can lead to significant loss of teeth, gingivitis or one of the many other periodontal diseases that often plague the human mouth. Typical treatment of a cavity is relatively simple, the infected portion is carved out of the tooth and removed then the remaining hole is sealed off via a filling in order to prevent further damage and to maintain a healthier tooth. However, the fillings themselves are rather complex and consist of multiple carefully picked reagents in order to properly seal off the tooth. In this paper, I will first give an overview of the mouth structure, the cause of cavities, and then discuss the different components that go into the creation of a filling. Before we can understand how dental caries form it is imperative that the structure and composition of the different tooth layers are first understood. To begin, the average tooth is divided up into seven distinct layers: enamel, dentin, pulp, gum, root canal, bone, and cementum
