O que pode o corpo? Spinoza, na cabeceira dos esfolados
Get PDFTranslation by Pedro H. G. MunizNo one has yet determined what the body can do. Some readers of the Ethics have understood this enigmatic sentence as the expression of Spinoza’s mistrust concerning medical knowledge. According to this reading, Spinoza would regard the human body as being endowed with plastic abilities or innovation skills for which the narrow Cartesian framework of the medical sciences of his time would be unable to account. In this article, I argue against such a reading by taking into consideration the anatomical dissections that Spinoza attended and the medical books that he read. The purpose of this article is twofold: 1/ to give a historicized reading of the analytic representation of complex bodies that Spinoza endorsed; 2/ to contribute to the discussion about the possible relationships between the semantic interpretation of philosophical texts and the historical study of their cultural milieu.Tradução de Pedro H. G. Muniz“Ninguém ainda determinou o que pode o corpo”. Alguns leitores da Ética entenderam esta sentença enigmática como a expressão da desconfiança de Spinoza em relação ao conhecimento médico. Segundo esta leitura, Spinoza consideraria o corpo humano como dotado de habilidades plásticas ou habilidades de inovação para as quais o quadro cartesiano estreito das ciências médicas de seu tempo não seria capaz de contabilizar. Neste artigo, argumento contra essa leitura levando em consideração as dissecções anatômicas que Spinoza atendeu e os livros médicos que ele leu. O objetivo deste artigo então é duplo: 1 / dar uma leitura histórica da representação analítica de corpos complexos que Spinoza endossou; 2 / contribuir para a discussão sobre as possíveis relações entre a interpretação semântica dos textos filosóficos e o estudo histórico do seu meio cultural
Perspectivism and Conciliation in the Reading of Plato’s Dialogues
Get PDFIn recent decades, a growing number of scholars have questioned the developmental approach to Plato that dominated scholarship during the 20th century. In this context, old strategies of reading the dialogues have been renewed and new approaches proposed. Basically, three different reading strategies the dialogues have been advocated: the still dominant Developmentalism, Unitarianism, and the Literary (or Dramatic) reading. These different approaches are still largely taken as competitors and there seems to be no methodology available that systematically integrates these different readings. In this paper, I work upon the “Perspective reading” proposed by Kahn (2005), and Gonzales (2016) in order to present a methodology that integrates some aspects of these different approaches in a systematic and coherent way.

Perspectivismo e Conciliação na Leitura dos Diálogos de Platão
Nas últimas décadas, a abordagem desenvolvimentista da obra de Platão, que dominou a academia durante o século XX, tem sido progressivamente questionada. Nesse contexto, antigas estratégias de leitura dos diálogos foram renovadas e novas abordagens, propostas. Basicamente, três estratégias de leitura dos diálogos foram defendidas: a, ainda dominante, leitura desenvolvimentista, o unitarismo e a leitura literária (ou dramática). Essas diferentes abordagens ainda são amplamente consideradas como concorrentes e parece não haver metodologia disponível que integre essas diferentes leituras. Neste artigo, desenvolvo a “leitura de perspectivista” proposta por Kahn (2005) e Gonzales (2016), a fim de apresentar uma metodologia que integre aspectos importantes das três abordagens acima citadas de maneira sistemática e coerente.

Pintura e escultura como modelos para o coro no Livro II das Leis de Platão
Get PDFThis paper is a commentary about the role of mimetic arts on the education of Plato’s second best possible city, imagined in the last dialogue he has written, The Laws. The education will be based on the chorus which will follow the designs presented by paintings and sculptures, according to our interpretation. These works of art imitate the Idea of Beauty directly and may be constituted by the image of Republic’s city ideal men, as we shall argue. Education takes place from the body, which dances and sings imitating the patterns exposed by the plastic works of art, to the soul. Therefore, the mimetic arts are essential in education and, as we will show, also in the perception of beauty by a straight representation of the beings.Este artigo constitui-se de um comentário acerca do papel das artes na educação da segunda melhor cidade possível de Platão imaginada no último diálogo que escreveu, As Leis. A educação será realizada através do coro que, segundo nossa interpretação, seguirá os desenhos apresentados pelas pinturas e esculturas. Estas, como defenderemos, imitam diretamente a Ideia do Belo e talvez correspondam à imagem dos homens ideais da cidade da República. Get PDFThis article seeks to discuss the concept of Hope and its semantic shifts in the Seventeenth Century, looking into the millenarianist expectations build upon three intervention texts, Esperança de Israel, Esperanças de Portugal e Door of Hope. Written in 1640s-1660s in the Netherlands, Portuguese America, and England, they have as a possible common axis the agency of Menasseh Ben Israel, an Amsterdan Portuguese-Jewish rabbi with links to Spinoza's family. In order to reflect upon Hope's conceptual changes and its centrality in the political-religious struggles, it will: 1) trace the semantic field of the concept, and 2) focus on the connections among the three sources and their producers.Este artigo pretende discutir o conceito de Esperança e seus câmbios semânticos no século XVII, focando nas expectativas milenaristas construídas em torno de três textos de intervenção: Esperança de Israel, Esperanças de Portugal e Door of Hope. Escritos entre os anos 1640 e 1660 na Holanda, América Portuguesa e Inglaterra, apresentavam como possível eixo articulador a atuação de Menasseh Ben Israel, rabino da comunidade portuguesa de Amsterdã e com ligações com os Espinosa. Memória em obra: um ensaio sobre Blade Runner 2049
Get PDFThis essay takes as its starting point the relationship between the treatment of memory in Blade Runner 2049 and what Eric Auerbach famously proposed as the double origin of realism in Western literature, in the first chapter of his book Mimesis, in order to address the political meaning of the film in terms that exceed the logic of representation. It discusses the articulation between memory and subjectivity that film elaborates as well as the very possibility of treating the film as an artwork, and not merely as a cultural commodity. The argument also draws on the relationship between the protagonist K and both the filmic landscape that surrounds him and narrative devices that either sustain or erode the stability of his identity.Tomando como ponto de partida a relação entre o tratamento da memória em Blade Runner 2049 e a dupla matriz do realismo na literatura ocidental proposta por Eric Auerbach no primeiro capítulo de seu livro Mimesis, este ensaio busca analisar o sentido político do filme para além dos termos ditados pela lógica da representação. Para tanto, é abordada tanto a relação entre memória e subjetividade que o filme elabora, como também a propriedade de tratá-lo como uma obra de arte, e não como um mero produto cultural. O argumento é desenvolvido com especial atenção para a relação do protagonista K com a paisagem fílmica que o cerca, e também com dispositivos narrativos voltados ou bem para a sustentação de sua identidade, ou então para sua desintegração
Estética e comunidade: ocupar o inacabado
Get PDFWe try to discuss here the notion of aesthetics, listening different situations. We are provoked by the world created among the opened walls of an unfinished building, occupied by students of Universidade Federal Fluminense; we are challenged by the experience of a march in struggle for housing, under the repression of the military police, an experience that comes to us with the images of a film, On the mission, with Kadu (2016), by Aiano Bemfica, Kadu Freitas e Pedro Maia de Brito. In the company of these situations, we draw some variations around the index of indetermination that the aesthetic state can create, as a way to enable the constant dispute for the present and for other ways of inhabiting a common space. We point here to some possible approaches to the notion of aesthetics, considered in a paradoxical regime of autonomy and heteronomy with other forces, implicated in the process of elaborating a community.Tentamos aqui fazer algumas indagações a respeito da noção de estética, nos colocando à escuta de situações com dimensões heterogêneas. Somos provocados pelo mundo criado em meio às paredes vazadas de um prédio inacabado, ocupado por estudantes da Universidade Federal Fluminense; somos interpelados pela experiência de uma passeata em luta pela moradia, sob a repressão da polícia militar, abrigada pelas imagens e disponibilizada pela montagem do filme Na missão, com Kadu (2016), de Aiano Bemfica, Kadu Freitas e Pedro Maia de Brito. Na companhia dessas situações, traçamos algumas variações em torno do índice de indeterminação que o estado estético pode criar, como maneira de possibilitar a constante disputa pelo presente e por outras formas de habitar um espaço comum. Apontamos aqui algumas possíveis aproximações à noção de estética, considerada num paradoxal regime de autonomia e heteronomia com outras forças, contagiada pelo processo de elaboração de uma comunidade
