Mental Hospitals and their Effect on Race and Gender in the 1920s
Get PDFMental illness in the United States has been part of a complex history. Many details of mental hospitals and the treatment of its patients have been omitted from popular literature and media. These patients were subjected to harsh treatment and forced to undergo extreme therapies that doctors claimed would improve their condition. In particular, female patients were also affected by the events that occurred during the early twentieth century, namely World War I and the Great Depression, and the stigmas of race and gender that they caused. Mental illness remained an understudied topic for much of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, but historians in recent decades have taken up the task of studying mental illness and revealing mistakes and challenges of the past. This paper incorporates the work of these historians, such as Joel Braslow and Gerald Grob, as well as the examination of two female patient files from Oregon State Hospital in the 1920s. These patients and their institutionalization served as a reflection of society and how it affected the concept of mental illness during that time period
A Film Analysis of Makoto Shinkai’s Garden of Words, 5cm per Second, and Your Name
Get PDFMakoto Shinkai’s Garden of Words, 5cm per Second, and Your Name have all been acclaimed as powerful films both in Japan and around the world. This project analyzes some of the filming techniques that Shinkai uses to make these films successful. The analysis centers on the themes of isolation, passage of time, and missed connections that occur throughout all three of the films. This project uses shots from the films to demonstrate how Shinkai uses certain filming strategies to accentuate these themes with the aid of the narrative and storyline. Initial analysis shows that Shinkai favors repetition of shots, montages, and long shots in these films. Further analysis could study the entirety of his works for similar themes and establish even more styles that remain consistent through his work
Combating Comprehensive School Garden Program Implementation Barriers in High Need Areas
Get PDFIn recent years, school gardens have taken hold in education curriculum across the country. Research has found that though these programs are becoming more popular, they are often implemented in areas of higher socioeconomic class. Low-income school districts struggle to find staff with adequate time to develop school garden programs. This project will help to open the doors for more rural areas to host school garden programs. Through an analysis of current research, compilation of a resource bundle, and creation of a guidebook, this project will provide educators with the tools that are necessary to implement a well-integrated garden. Where higher socioeconomic areas might be able to afford a garden coordinator salary, lower socioeconomic areas will be able to utilize this toolkit to self-start a well-integrated program. I will be focusing on my hometown elementary school, Taft Elementary, as a model school. First, I will be gathering resources on outdoor classroom management, lesson and curricula planning, and a Text set for literacy integration. From there I will be designing guidebook that will contain tips for seasonal care of a garden in the harsh climate of the Oregon Coast, calendars for planting in the garden, and many more sources that teachers can use to implement a school garden program. Este trabajo estudia de forma breve, la relación del racismo y discriminación laboral hacia la comunidad afrodescendiente en Ecuador por medio de un análisis de los siguientes ámbitos de la discriminación laboral: Diferencia de empleos, salarios y beneficios laborales por etnia en ocupaciones del sector urbano. Esto con la finalidad de mostrar que dicho concepto aún existe hoy día en el país. La investigación se basa en fuentes que proveen datos sobre la composición étnica de Ecuador, porcentajes de empleo en el sector moderno, nivel de escolaridad, salario, pobreza y beneficios laborales por etnia. El ensayo, también incluye información de una encuesta, una entrevista y casos de discriminación en el trabajo como ejemplos de la existencia de este concepto. En conclusión, la investigación muestra que en efecto, el racismo laboral hacia las personas afrodescendientes en Ecuador está presente y sugiere que para terminar o al menos minimizar este conflicto, la sociedad debe dejar de categorizar a individuos en razas y promover la aceptación e inclusión de diferentes culturas.

Abstract
This work briefly studies the relationship of racism and employment discrimination towards the Afro-descendant community in Ecuador through an analysis of the following areas of employment discrimination: Differences in jobs, salaries and labor benefits by ethnicity in occupations of the urban sector. This in order to show that this concept still exists today in the country. The research is based on sources that provide data on the ethnic composition of Ecuador, percentages of employment, level of education, salary, poverty, and labor benefits by ethnicity. The essay also includes information about a survey, an interview, and cases of discrimination in the workplace as proof of the existence of this concept. In conclusion, the research shows that discrimination in the workplace towards people of African descent in Ecuador is present and suggests that to end or at least minimize this conflict, society must stop categorizing individuals in races and promote the acceptance and inclusion of different cultures.
