Get PDFThrough my short history of being an interpreter, confidence has always been a factor in my interpretations. In this paper, I seek to shed some light, from the lens of a new interpreter, on how confidence has an impact on interpreting skills while testing different techniques to improve interpreting confidence level. As Harwood (2017) stated, “Individuals start with a fundamental concept of self and then layer on a variety of identities, including a professional identity, thereby forming the answer to the question: who are you?” (p. x). Confidence helps shape this identity for new interpreters, which reflects on every decision-making skill, especially in uncertain situations. It\u27s Not Just for Jews Anymore: A Guide to Interpreting in the Jewish Setting
Get PDFMany interpreters are bilingual and can be multilingual in a variety of spoken and signed languages. The typical reason for interpreters being multilingual is for communication when more than two languages are used, for example at borders of countries, or in courts when multiple language must be used to ensure that all parties involved have a solid understanding of the materials. In order to better understand interpreting in the Jewish setting it is important to look at tri/multilingual interpreters in religious settings at events such as a Bris, Bat/Bar Mitzvah, weddings, and funerals. Religious communities each have special traditions and practices specific to the groups involved. Some of these practices are held in other languages or are ancient rituals and prayers that have been used for many centuries. There are a multitude of religions in the world, and Deaf people are involved with every type of religion from Atheism to Zionism
Immigrants, Mental Health, and the Oregon State Hospital
Get PDFThis Senior thesis examines the treatment and care of immigrants who found themselves within the confines of the Oregon State Hospital in the early 20th century. During the Progressive Era (1890-1920) there was a rise in the use of mental health institutions and along with it came patients from various backgrounds. Many patients were admitted either voluntarily or by others in good faith for recovery from their mental ailments. Others however, fell victim to mental institutions being used to work against marginalized groups during this time. Two case files show individual examples of immigrants who were put in the State Hospital in the early 20th century and display how they were treated within and without the walls of the hospital. With the support of secondary sources from scholars like Joel Braslow, Susan Burch, and John D’Emilio and Estelle B. Freedman, practices within the Oregon State Hospital are analyzed. There is also an emphasized investigation on how mental health institutions operated against marginalized groups in the early 20th century
A Guidebook to a Bilingual Education System from a Firsthand Perspective
Get PDFBilingual instruction has swept the educational system in the last few decades, and gained a lot of attention even though the idea has been present for a very long time in our country. I had the opportunity to be a part of a bilingual educational system in my public school experience and was one of the first cohorts to complete this kind of program in my hometown of Salem, Oregon. This first-hand look has given me insight into how certain aspects of the program are excellent and how others may need to be improved. In this guidebook, academic research as well as my own personal thoughts based on my experiences will give a thorough view on the various parts of the bilingual education programs in the Salem Keizer School District. My goal in this project is to look into different components of an educational immersion program that will benefit all types of learning but are mainly targeted at those that are being taught in two languages. Teaching a second language should not vary so much from our typical English instruction, though I concede some things may differ. If we are truly wanting to make our children bilingual, some of the components of the second language education should coincide with that of the mainstream education, because that aids in a deeper understanding of both languages and illustrates how both languages are shown as equally important to the families participating in immersion programs. This handbook looks to open a larger discussion on bilingual education so that improvements could be discussed in order to create programs that benefit people of diverse backgrounds, learning styles and those seeking to truly become bilingual
Why Art Matters in an Increasingly Analytical World: Artistic Means of Communicating Scientific Concepts
Get PDFHistorically, through the combined forces of scientists and artists, there have been periods of revolutionary discovery and growth in the sciences. However, in today’s society, science and art are often considered separate disciplines and in some instances are even seen as conflicting areas of study. This review examines the current debate of STEM vs STEAM in primary educational settings and the lack of scientific literacy in the United States today, as well as important research on how art can combat public disinterest in scientific research and policy. It discusses the importance of science based art, and the renewal of artistic and scientific collaboration. The artists statement and explanation will review the process of taking a scientific publication and creating three art pieces: a visual art piece, a written art piece, and a movement art piece, all based on the publication “Jellyfish extract induces apoptotic cell death through the p38 pathway and cell cycle arrest in chronic myelogenous leukemia K562 cells”
