Pursue Some Path : Green Space as a Self-care Method
Get PDFThis action research begins with an exploration of “Green Space,” a theory that claims nature has a deep and meaningful impact on the psyche. Green Space has been shown to help reduce anxiety and increase attention, creativity, and memory. The Transactional Theory Framework is examined in tandem with Green Space theory. The transactional theory is a means to evaluate the processes of coping with stress and stressful events. I applied the concept of Green Space as a primary self-care method and then collected and analyzed data. I looked at how Green Space combats stress and burnout. Additionally, I explored in what ways Green Space impacts my work as an American Sign Language/ English interpreter. I did this by viewing and/or participating in a Green Space event, collecting data via daily journaling, as well as writing pre and post journal entries, and creating work sample
Initial Understandings of the Perceptions to the Self-Efficacy in Interpreters Working in K-12: Potential Underlying Factors
Get PDFThe intent of this research is to utilize the self-efficacy construct in the profession of signed language interpretation specific to those in the K-12 environment and identify factors potentially influencing self-efficacy. Perceived self-efficacy influences the cognitive, motivational, affective, and selection processes in the behaviors of people (Bandura, 1977). Self-efficacy refers to an individual’s belief in their capabilities “to organize and execute the course of action required to manage prospective situations” (Bandura, 1997, p. 2). Research demonstrates that teachers with high self-efficacy influence successful student outcomes and persistent in teaching (Henson, Kogan, & Vacha-Hasse, 2001). In a survey of educational interpreters, participants described conflicting responses between the self-efficacy Likert scale ratings and open-ended comments. The data revealed interpreters are highly influenced by multiple aspects of the environment. Some patterns emerged that may be substantiated by future research. This survey resulted in unexpected findings. Self-efficacy demonstration and belief may reveal itself as the ability to enact professional agency in the interpreter role defined by the environmental expectations, understanding and application of interpreter role. Additional findings revealed 97% of the respondents indicated the need for more training, 50% indicated the need for being included in collaboration as a valued member of the educational team and factors included a felt need for national standardization of educational interpreters. 47% of the respondents identified the need for clearer consistent guidelines and parameters within this specialization. This represents initial understandings of self-efficacy and its potential influence on the beliefs and behaviors of those who work in the educational system
“Shit Show” or Everyone That Needs to go to the Bathroom Should Go Now: Personal Experiences No One Thinks They Need to Know
Get PDFThrough a comic one-woman show, I will involve the audience in an exploration of my own personal stories and experiences with menstruation and feces. I purpose to break down some of the stigma that is associated with bodily functions by talking about them with open and blunt language and dialogue throughout the performance. One person shows have arguably been around ever since the first storytellers. While this show would be different in the nature of the stories being told, it would follow a very similar theatrical tradition by having one person narrate a story in a way that made the audience feel as if they were present within the room where it was happening. My primary focus in these stories will be on how we view periods and feces as a society and the unnatural feelings of shame that are associated with these two functions. Although I will mention other bodily functions briefly, I will spearhead this show behind those two functions in order to give the performance a definite shape and focus. This performance will include my own personal stories that I will retell by using present-tense language in order to fully engage the audience with what is happening on stage and to drive the action and plot of each story forward. At the end of this process I will have created a fully formed one-woman show that was performed June 9th, 2019 at 5:15pm in the Rice Auditorium Black Box. I aim to have the show’s run time be approximately 30-45 minutes
When the Truth Isn\u27t Enough: Anti-Racist-White Hero Framework, Tokenism, and Postracism
Get PDFBy applying Madison’s “anti-racist-white-hero” (ARWH) framework developed in 1999, I seek to discuss how ambiguous, and yet, obvious views of race, racism, and success are threaded throughout the 2000 film Men of Honor, and so, create a false sense of post-racism, which includes a rhetoric of tokenism. Through the application of this framework, I am then able to conclude that the film does, in fact, “sustain systemic racism even though it appears to expose and condemn it” (McFarlane p. 82). By taking an in-depth look at the film, I am able to expose the myth of white superiority and assert that post-racism and white heroism are at the crux of media as it applies to the film industry. I analyze the film against the backdrop of Tokenism according to Cloud, as explained by Bineham in his article, How the Blind Side Blinds Us, and find that the responsibility of failure is removed from the systems of power and privilege that are largely creating the obstacles in Navy Diver Carl Brashear’s life in the first place, and positions that responsibility solely on Brashear himself. Through examining the facts of Carl Brashear’s real-life events and comparing them to the larger than life events that Hollywood created, I reframe the narrative of the film to find the ugly truth…racism sells
