The Narrative Agency of Matter in Small Things Like These

    Get PDF
Ecological Postmodernism and New Materialism have driven the material turn of ecological criticism, making material an important critical springboard for studying novel texts. Scholars, Serenella Iovino and Serpil Oppermann were inspired to propose the concept of “narrative agency of matter”, which propelled the development of Material Ecocriticism. Material Ecocriticism (2014), a collection of papers co-edited by them, is a representative work in the theoretical construction of Material Ecocriticism. Small Things Like These is the second novella written by Irish modern writer Claire Keegan, which has won important literary awards upon its publication. Material Ecocriticism. Keegan resorts to “snow” and “coal” to integrate Irish traumatic history into her fictional imagination, telling a trivial but touching story. In this novel, “snow” and “coal” exist as images with discourse power, playing a crucial role in the construction of the entire story. The paper will focus on interpreting the narrative agency of these two materials, and will further explore Keegan’s unique writing style

The Gains and Losses of U.S. Central Asia Policy in the Context of Geopolitical Rivalry

    Get PDF
Since the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the Central Asian region has undergone profound geopolitical transformations. With the successive independence of the five Central Asian countries—Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan—a power vacuum emerged, enabling the United States to engage comprehensively in Central Asian affairs. This theoretical paper aims to analyze the evolution of U.S. policy in Central Asia through a geopolitical lens, identifying the core objectives, strategic shifts, and assess the gains and losses of its policies in the region. The findings indicate that U.S. policy has transitioned through three phases: (1) the "power vacuum period" prioritizing stability and independence from Russian influence, (2) the "forceful intervention period" following 9/11 focused on counterterrorism and democratization, and (3) the "strategic balancing period" after the Afghanistan withdrawal emphasizing multilateral cooperation and economic interests. While the U.S. has established a degree of presence in Central Asia, its long-term influence remains constrained by Russia’s enduring historical and cultural ties and the rising economic presence of other powers. Due to five Central Asian countries historical reality, the U.S. Central Asia policy should aim at promoting regional economic development and improving people's livelihood rather than ideological control

Study on Compensation for Illegal Administrative Expropriation

    Get PDF
According to the current legislative system, when expropriating collective land and immovable property owned by right holders, it is necessary to legally fulfill the obligation of compensation. The legislative body has constructed a comprehensive institutional framework covering the entire process from expropriation decisions, compensation and resettlement to compulsory enforcement through both substantive and procedural law dimensions. However, in the rapid urbanization process, administrative law enforcement departments frequently engage in demolition actions that exceed their statutory authority, leading to serious infringements on the legitimate rights and interests of property right holders. Notably, the current provisions of the State Compensation Law still suffer from issues of vague regulation and institutional lag, making it difficult to effectively address disputes arising from illegal forced demolitions——The law lacks clear guidance on key aspects such as defining the scope of compensation and applying calculation standards, resulting in “different judgments for similar cases” in judicial practice. More alarming is that some judicial bodies blur the legal boundaries between administrative compensation and judicial compensation, improperly applying compensation standards to handle compensation disputes, thereby depriving the aggrieved parties of their statutory right to comprehensive relief. This article focuses on the judicial recognition criteria for illegal forced demolitions, systematically analyzes the normative deficiencies in institutional operations, and proposes practical legal improvement suggestions

Factors Influencing the Continuous Usage Behavior of Short Video App Douyin Based on the Information System Continuance Model

    Get PDF
With the proliferation of mobile internet, short video platforms like Douyin have become central to digital lifestyles. This study investigates factors influencing users' continuous usage behavior by integrating the Expectation-Confirmation Model (ECM-IT) with variables such as perceived pleasure, IT Identity, and habit. Data from online questionnaires were analyzed via structural equation modeling (SEM). Key findings reveal: (1) Satisfaction is most strongly driven by perceived pleasure, followed by expectation confirmation and perceived usefulness, while perceived ease of use shows no significant impact. (2) Continuous usage intention is primarily influenced by IT Identity (self-relevance of the app), satisfaction, and perceived pleasure. (3) Habit negatively moderates the relationship between intention and behavior, reducing intention's predictive power. (4) Perceived ease of use does not enhance IT Identity. These results highlight the critical role of entertainment value and user identity in sustaining engagement. Practical recommendations include optimizing content diversity to boost perceived pleasure, fostering IT Identity through personalized interactions, and leveraging habit formation via intuitive design. The study advances ECM-IT by validating IT Identity as a novel construct and offers actionable insights for retaining users in competitive short video markets

A “T-S-M” Interactive Teaching Model for Teaching the Translation of Discourses with Chinese Characteristics from Report to the 20th National Congress of CPC: A DTS Perspective on Cultivating Knowledge, Competence and Values

    Get PDF
In the era of generative artificial intelligence, it has become a major challenge for translation pedagogy to accurately translate and effectively disseminate the “discourses with Chinese characteristics” embedded in classic political and theoretical literature. From the perspective of Descriptive Translation Studies (DTS), this paper proposes a “Teacher-Student-Machine” (T-S-M) interactive teaching model. By using the characteristic discourses from Report to the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) as core material, this research places the teacher (facilitator), student (constructor), and machine/AI (collaborator) within a new, dynamic, and interactive educational ecosystem. Through a three-dimensional analytical framework of “Product-Process-Function,” the model guides students to develop their Human-AI Interactive Negotiation Competence (HAINC) by making multi-dimensional comparisons among their own translations, machine translations, and authoritative translations. This model effectively transforms theoretical knowledge of translation into a cognitive tool for students to solve complex problems. By tracking and reflecting on the human-machine interaction process, it significantly enhances students' higher-order competencies such as critical thinking and problem-solving. Furthermore, through the practice of translating sensitive discourses, it guides students to deeply understand the national stance, thereby achieving an organic integration of knowledge transmission, competence cultivation, and value shaping. This provides an effective practical solution for cultivating high-quality, new-era translation talent capable of telling China's story well
