A Study on Explicitation through Implicit Logical Relations of E-C Translation in Social Science Texts

    Get PDF
In the E-C translation, relevant texts such as social media and big data are selected as the original texts, which showcase the progressiveness of our era, and translating these texts facilitates the public’s understanding and utilization of these technologies. Given the differences in logical thinking and expression habits between English and Chinese, social science texts tend to be laden with multiple terms, complex sentence structures, and robust logical coherence. As a result, implicit logical relations frequently emerge and translators need to employ logical judgment and conduct thorough analysis at the lexical, syntactic, and discourse levels. To tackle these issues, explicitation theory has been applied, suggesting several strategies are implemented to handle implicit logical structures within the target texts

Analysis of Conversational Repair in the Symmetrical and Asymmetrical Friendships: The Big Bang Theory as an example

    Get PDF
The language people use could form an important part of their sense of who they are or their identities. This research aims to describe pragmatic features and conversational repair strategies employed in dialogues characterized by symmetrical and asymmetrical relationships. Utilizing a qualitative methodology, the study analyzes dialogues from the English sitcom The Big Bang Theory, specifically focusing on interactions between Sheldon and Penny (symmetrical relationship) and between Sheldon and Leonard (asymmetrical relationship). The findings reveal distinct patterns in conversational repair strategies across relationship types. In a symmetrical friendship, both self-repair and other-repair strategies are implemented to resolve conversational difficulties. Conversely, in an asymmetrical friendship, self-repair strategies are exclusively employed when the higher-status individual commits verbal errors. Furthermore, the study identifies specific attendant activities accompanying repair processes: apologies and instructions follow corrections in a symmetrical friendship, while compromise and complaints characterize repair sequence in an asymmetrical friendship. This research highlights the significance of employing appropriate conversational repair in daily communication across diverse interpersonal relationships, demonstrating how diverse repair strategies are used in different relationships to smooth the communication and maintain relationship dynamics

A Brief Analysis of Chomsky’s Transformational Generative Grammar

    Get PDF
Chomsky is a famous American philosopher and linguist. Chomsky combined language research with mathematical logic and put forward a new linguistic theory and idea, namely transformational generative grammar. Transformational generative grammar is one of the most influential linguistic theories in Western linguistics. Generative grammar is a set of explicit rules for how language is used and for the mind of the person who uses a particular language. It not only injected a fresh force into the field of linguistics, but also had a profound impact on a range of disciplines such as psychology and philosophy. In this study, we interpreted Chomsky's transformational generative grammar, and further elaborated the significance and influence of transformational generative grammar, and finally made a comment on it

Voice Beyond Discourse: Nelly’s Narrative Intervention and Narrative Ethics in Wuthering Heights

    Get PDF
Wuthering Heights, the masterpiece of British author Emily Brontë, depicts a story about "a storm of love and vengeance". It has secured an unshakable position in world literary history through its vivid imagination, delicate structure, and Gothic style. Current scholarly analyses of its multiple narrative perspectives predominantly focuses on the multiplicity of narrators’ identities and the reliability of narrative discourse, yet insufficient attention has been paid to the core of narrative artistry—the function of narrators and their discursive interventions. Nelly Dean, as the primary narrator of the novel, not only propels the narrative progression but also takes on a mediating role in character dialogues through moral evaluations and emotional inclinations. This paper explores how the author employs Nelly’s discursive interventions to interweave narrative progression, exercising the explanatory, judgmental, and summative functions. It tries to explain Brontë’s skillful use of extratextual forms to grant Nelly a channel for voices, revealing her crucial role in foreshadowing and guiding the novel’s emotional tone as well as controlling the rhythm and structure of the narrative. Furthermore, the study clarifies the relationship between the narrator’s interventions and the narrative ethics of the implied author

    Get PDF
This research investigates the relationship between the autonomy support afforded to teachers and class teaching. The profile of respondents includes a diverse group of teachers varying in sex, years of service, and highest educational attainment. Teachers' perceptions of autonomy support were generally positive, particularly in areas such as responsive teaching and providing rationale, although there is room for improvement in minimizing control and pressure. No significant differences were found in the perceived autonomy support based on sex, length of service, or educational attainment. The correlation analysis shows a nuanced relationship between autonomy support and class teaching. The research concludes that while overall teacher’s autonomy support do not significantly correlate with general class teaching, specific practices can influence certain dimensions of class teaching. Recommendations include improving communication, fostering a supportive environment, increasing opportunities for teacher autonomy, and providing clear rationales for decisions. These insights aim to enhance teacher’s class autonomy and contribute to creating a more effective educational environment for university students
