Centralised or De-centralised Gender Policies ? Measuring Regional Gender Disparities in Turkey

    Get PDF
This study provides the most comprehensive mapping of gender inequality in Turkey, and thus helping to establish a baseline to untangle locality-specific factors stimulating gender inequality. By measuring the distance from gender parity, the findings reveal that all cities have gender inequality. However, the issue is more severe for the cities in eastern Turkey than for those in the west. We compared the socioeconomic inequality of the cities and their level of closeness to parity, to determine which indicators must be prioritised as “impact zones” for each city to act upon. But the cities do not have relatively consistent parity figures, suggesting they are not similar to one another. Therefore, the intervention policies adopted in one may not necessarily be effective in others. All in all, the Turkish case explored in this study offers insights for other developing countries to review their policies to overcome their “gender inequality trap”

These factors include independent variables consisting of financing, the distribution ratio (Financing to Deposit Ratio-FDR), labor cost ratio (LCR), promotion cost ratio (PCR), financing quality ratio (Non-Performing Financing-NPF), ratio distribution of financing to micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and Return on Assets (ROA). Furthermore, to determine the relationship between financial performance indicators in conventional banks (ROA) with financial performance indicators and social performance in Islamic banks (IPR), ROA becomes a moderating variable. The results of this study show that FDR has a positive and significant effect on IPR, LCR has a negative and insignificant effect on IPR, PCR has a positive and significant effect on IPR, NPF has a negative and significant effect on IPR, MSMEs have a positive and significant effect on IPR, ROA has a positive and significant effect on IPR, and ROA has a positive and significant effect on IPR. Significant to the IPR. Whereas the ROA variable as a variable that moderates the relationship of these independent variables to IPR results in that ROA moderates the effect of ROA positively and significantly on IPR, ROA moderates the effect of LCR negatively and significantly on IPR, ROA moderates the effect of PCR positively and significantly on IPR. Also, ROA positively and significantly moderates the effect of MSMEs on IPR

Testing the Stability of Tourism-Led Growth Hypothesis for Ethiopia

    Get PDF
Tourism-Led Growth (TLG) hypothesis demonstrates the profound contribution of tourism industry to the growth of real income. This study examines the long-term impact of international tourism on economic growth in Ethiopia, using a series of annual data spanning from 1995 to 2018. We contribute to the existing empirical literature on Tourism-Led Growth hypothesis, by adopting the conventional least squares framework and the Engle-Granger cointegration test between tourism receipts, trade openness, expenditures on physical capital, expenditures on tertiary education and economic growth in Ethiopia. The Engle-Granger (1987) tested stable long-term relation between the variables considered. This partly guarantees the TLG hypothesis. However, contrary to the predictions of TLG, we have estimated insignificant impact of tourism receipts on the long-run growth of Ethiopian economy, while challenging trustworthiness of the hypothesis in the context of Ethiopia. Our results revealed that the theory itself is incomplete. Besides, the foreign direct investment and domestic investments in physical capital were found significant contributor of long-run real income growth in Ethiopia. It is recommended that the government of Ethiopia should encourage private sector participation to develop the necessary infrastructures in order to achieve higher room tenancy
