Changing point of view – from material volume to covered square metre as functional unit for a meaningful comparison of the environmental impact of structures
Limiting the environmental sustainability of the construction sector is today a strategic objective of all European countries. Currently, the environmental impact associated with structures is increasingly included into building certification protocols, starting from the input of the Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) issued by producers of elements on a voluntary basis. EPDs are based on functional units which typically refer to a unitary volume of material produced (e.g. reinforced concrete or steel). However, there is currently an “acritical” data acquisition to fill the protocols, which is not translated into an actual action for a more sustainable design of the structure. Moreover, minimum environmental criteria are being issued by governments on the basis of the use of particular materials. Therefore, most institutions refer to EPDs to rapidly assess the sustainability of a structural solution, preferring the selection of those that employ more sustainable materials, moreover not being able to carry out a meaningful comparison between different technologies (cast-in-situ concrete, precast concrete, steel, timber). However, this point of view is short-sighting, since many industries employ high-performance materials and production techniques in order to get a reduction of the total volume of material employed for the construction, which may turn into a more sustainable solution, as proven by recent researches. Therefore, a more meaningful functional unit for a correct comparison of the environmental impact of different structural solutions is proposed to be the covered square metre, rather than the material volume. Leveraging AWS Lambda functions and GitHub actions for deployment of serverless apps
Serverless computing is increasingly in demand. The ability to allocate machine resources as needed in cloud is a precious possibility. Many systems leverage serverless computing as it reduces the cost of maintaining a dedicated instance for infrequent function executions. Different cloud providers have different implementation of the serverless computing. The cloud provider used in this research is Amazon Web Services (AWS), where the serverless computing implementation is known as Lambda functions. Software code is managed using source control tools. Git is the most wide used source control tool. One of the most popular cloud-based services for managing Git repositories across developers is GitHub. GitHub is mostly free for use and has action workflows that perfectly fit the role of CI/CD for deploying serverless applications. A great addition to the GitHub actions, is the serverless deploy plugin from the serverless framework. The result of this research is a review and implementation of a GitHub action workflow that packages and deploys functions to AWS Lambda using the serverless deploy plugin
Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopic characterization of raw and thermally treated clays from Albania
There is growing interest in using thermally treated clays as supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) in construction. The suitability of the clays as SCMs varies according to their origin and composition. Clay minerals undergo several changes when heated, including dehydration, dehydroxylation, structural collapse, and new phases formation. This paper aims to evaluate the structural changes and modifications induced by thermal treatment of some selected clays from Albania. After grinding and sieving, the selected clays are treated thermally for one hour in different temperature values, ranging from 550 to 750°C. Using Object-Based Classification to Estimate Built-Up Density in an Urban Environment: A Case Study in Ferizaj, Kosova
In this research, built-up density is quantified in Ferizaj’s urban setting through object-based classification on Planet Imagery (0.5m) acquired in 2019. The identification of homogeneous urban features is done by using ArcGIS Pro software and Mean Shift Segmentation. This segmentation is rather useful in the identification of clusters by incorporating the spatial and spectral characteristics that distinguish builtup and non-built-up regions. Training samples were obtained from satellite imagery and aerial images collected in 2019 with equal distribution of samples in the classification. Object-based classification has major benefits over pixel-based techniques in using spatial context and minimizing misclassification in urban areas. Online Restaurant Management System
This research introduces a restaurant management system designed to streamline operations like order processing, reservations, and employee scheduling. By allowing customers to reserve tables online, the system helps reduce wait times and improve the overall dining experience. It also simplifies business operations by cutting down on the need for staff to handle booking calls and helps managers stay on top of employee schedules and inventory. The platform is built using React and TailwindCSS for a user-friendly and responsive interface. Axios manages secure communication between the frontend and the ASP.NET Core backend, where business logic is handled using the repository pattern. Data is managed efficiently through SQL Server and Entity Framework, with DTOs and Auto Mapper ensuring smooth data flow. The project follows the Agile methodology, which offers flexibility and adaptability during development. Competencies of Municipalities in the Water Sector, Republic of Kosovo
This paper deals, based on the current legal framework of the Republic of Kosovo, with the powers, responsibilities, obligations, etc., that Municipalities have for the good administration, management, etc., of water resources within their territory. The territory of the Republic of Kosovo has an area of 10905.25 km2 . It is divided into seven regions and there are currently 38 administrative units called Municipalities. Until 1999 there were 22 municipalities, after 1999 until 2010 there were 30 administrative units-municipalities and from 2008, the Republic of Kosovo has 38 municipalities. The water resources in the territories of the communes are: the network of surface waters, part of which are also natural lakes, wetlands, swamps, reservoirs, dams with the accumulation of artificial surface water and underground waters (aquifers, springs, etc.). The type, quantity, quality, etc., of these water assets differs from one Municipal territory to another. In today\u27s digital landscape, the vast flow of data has become an integral part of every sector, from healthcare to finance. This continuous generation of voluminous data, often referred to as data streaming, plays a critical role in processing real-time information, where low-latency and highthroughput solutions are essential. We explored the key frameworks and technologies used for event and data streaming, focusing on managing medical signals such as temperature and oxygen levels. The study evaluates the effectiveness of platforms like Apache Kafka, Apache Storm, Apache Flank, Apache Spark, and Amazon Kinesis in processing large-scale data streams. An experimental REST API was developed using C# and .NET, integrated with Kafka to handle real-time medical signals. The results demonstrated Kafka’s superior ability to manage continuous data streams, making it a prime solution for real-time medical data streaming, while also identifying areas for future improvements in event processing and data management strategies.
