How students perceive the value of accounting education: the case of a Portuguese HEI
The objective of this paper is to evaluate the perception of accounting/tax students of a Higher Education Institution (HEI) about the value of education in financial and cost accounting. The research highlights and distinguishes the relevance of financial and/or cost accounting to the labour market and to organisations from the perspective of students. The study is quantitative, and the data was collected through a questionnaire for students who are completing a course in accounting or taxation. Students consider accounting fundamental to the labour market and extremely important the information provided by financial and/or cost accounting for the fulfilment of legal obligations, to assist in internal decision-making and to provide information to all relevant audiences. This study was conducted at the Research Center on Accounting and Taxation (CICF) and was funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) through national funds (UIDB/04043/2020 and UIDP/04043/2020)

Design optimization of medical robotic systems based on task performance metrics: A feasibility study for robotic guided vascular laser treatments
While designing an end‐effector tool for a specific task using an already available
robotic arm is a common strategy for developing robot‐based solutions, it is subject
to the designer's subjective biases, especially in the medical robotics field.
Consequently, this approach can result in suboptimal solutions that may limit the
performance of the robotic arm and the overall system. This work introduces a novel
framework for developing a virtual scenario that enables the robust optimization of
design guidelines for robotics‐based medical solutions. The proposed framework
aims to address the issue of subjectivity involved in the design process, improving
the reliability and accuracy of the robotic system. Specifically, it aims to find the
optimized 3D positioning of the Tool Center Point and the robot base that takes full
advantage of the robotic arm kinematics. The feasibility of the proposed
methodology is validated for designing a system for robotic‐guided vascular laser
treatments. First, a simulated treatment environment is constructed to compute the
optimal trajectories to treat a wide population of synthetic human models. Next, a
design optimization methodology based on robot task performance metrics is
developed. Overall, the proposed design guidelines allowed the performance of
94.1% of the treatment trajectories free of collisions with median precision of
around 0.5 mm while guaranteeing high manipulability. Thus, proving the added
value of the proposed strategy and showing the potential for promoting the
development of optimized robotics‐based solutions
complexidade e manutenção do alinhamento estratégico.
Environmental strategy & management and accounting information system’s relationship: a Portuguese case study
Literature review suggests that environmental strategic alignment and the environmental management accounting practices’ adoption, is influenced not only by institutional pressure (coercive, mimetic and normative), but also by the organization’s characteristics. The aim of this paper is twofold: a) to analyse, from a theoretical point of view, the implications of considering the environmental variables into the companies’ strategy, management and accounting information systems; b) to develop a case study in order to understand the strategies, practices, management tools and environmental/sustainability disclosure adopted by a large Portuguese group, operating in an environmental sensitive industry, and the role performed by its accounting information system. Environmental issues have been incorporated into the Group’s strategy and management practices as result of external pressures, from legislative and stakeholders demands. This proactive strategy was materialized by a) an organizational restructuring, including an environmental/sustainability; b) the changes in the production process, introducing clean technologies and a circular economy approach b) the of the environmental management systems’ implementation and certification in all industrial centres. The information generated by the accounting information system reflects the relevance of environmental variables for the group, as for the cost accounting and in the financial accounting. However, the status quo of environmental management accounting (EMA) development is unsatisfactory, perhaps as result of the lack of common guidelines to implement EMA in a business context.Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) through national funds (UIDB/04043/2020 and UIDP/04043/2020)
Comparative analysis of micro level indicators for evaluating the progress towards a circular economy
With the transition from a linear to a more circular economic model, tools are required to monitor the effect of adopted changes, and to assist in further decision-making along time. Within this context, circularity micro-indicators have been proposed by many authors as a fairly simple tool to measure progress towards a more circular economy, at the product or company level. However, these circularity micro-indicators do not follow a standard, vary widely in complexity and approach, and some of them are extremely narrow focused on only a few aspects of the entire product life cycle, hampering their practical adoption by companies. Based on existing literature on categorization and assessment of micro-level indicators, we have further explored a large number of indicators, identifying common features, and highlighting particularly relevant correlations between indicators as we cross-reference different classification schemes. We further assessed their characteristics to assist companies in selecting which micro-indicators to adopt in different stages of their product development processes. Results show an unbalance towards indicators focused on environmental and economic dimensions compared to the social dimension, with indicators that incorporate multiple dimensions associated only to end-of-life management and remanufacturing. We conclude also that most indicators that tackle more than a single dimension of sustainability require collecting external data, and that the measure of circularity for a significant number of them is dependent on external conditions (market and legislation) that go beyond the decisions and strategy of the company. This study will further help in the understanding of the practical application of the micro-indicators as well as their adoption by industry, which will promote the transition to a more circular economy
Cyber-Physical System for Evaluation of Taekwondo Athletes: An Initial Project Description
Regardless of the type of sport, coaches must perform the difficult task of evaluating the performance of athletes. In some cases, this task is aided using technology which provides tools for this purpose. When the sport considered is taekwondo this scenario does not apply as the athlete evaluation methods used are mostly manual. Thus, the project presented in this paper has the main objective to develop a system that can be used as a tool to evaluate the performance of taekwondo athletes in real time, with special attention to the low cost of implementation and ease of use. With the intention of meeting these requirements, the developed system comprises a 3D camera with a depth sensor (Orbbec Astra), Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs) with accelerometer and gyroscope, a computer and specific software developed for this purpose. This system allows the collection of data from the athletes’ movements necessary for the creation of a dataset that is then analyzed and interpretated. The system permits the user to obtain real-time information about the speed, acceleration, and strength of the athlete’s limbs during training as well as the identification of some movements and their accounting. To achieve this functionality, deep-learning architecture models were used, more specifically long short-term memory (LSTM). The intention is to provide a new training methodology through faster feedback, so that a faster evolution of the athlete’s performance is possible, contributing to the technological development of the assessment practices used in taekwondo
Sustainability reporting and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Higher Education: a Portuguese university case
The year 2015 represented a historic mark for sustainable development, with the approval of the 2030 Agenda at the United Nations (UN) summit, which defined 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). The UN 2030 Agenda provides a universal framework to which each country, region and community can prioritize its needs and address them locally. Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) can and must provide a holistic approach to the 2030 Agenda and advance it, since the SDGs are a key aspect of their social responsibility (Vilalta, Betts and Gomez, 2018).
The UN Agenda 2030 represents an opportunity for the improvement of university management, the relationship with stakeholders and the community, and the articulation and consolidation of education policies with the SDGs. Sustainability education can provide students with the in-depth competence to incorporate sustainability into the consciousness of the future, as citizens and professionals. Thus, HEIs will need to be able to plan, evaluate and monitor their contributions to the SDGs and review their strategies accordingly. Therefore, reports can play a key role, informing HEIs' progress towards sustainability in 4 main areas (learning and teaching, research, organizational governance and external leadership) and shaping future commitments and actions.
This article aims to develop a longitudinal study regarding the evolution of the sustainability report in a Portuguese Public University – the University of Minho - seeking to analyse how this University includes it’s contributions toward the SDG of the 2030 Agenda in its disclosures. The study methodology is based on content analysis of the information disclosed in the Sustainability Reports published until 2016, referring to the period 2010-2015. The results indicate that the University adopted the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) guidelines. The alignment with the UN goals was made for the first time in the last sustainability report. This work is financed by national funds through FCT - Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P., within the scope of multi-annual funding UIDB/04043/2020
