VISUAL NARRATIVES OF “PATRICIA PICCININI’S CARE”: A SEMIOTIC AND DISCOURSE ANALYSIS OF ART EXHIBITION

    No full text
Throughout the history of mankind, art exhibitions have taken roles as the media to appreciate and publicize various types of artworks, including paintings, sculptures, dioramas, and other types of art. Aside from this role, art exhibitions are also organized as a means of narrating stories and messages, representing a particular theme. This research aims to explore the complex narratives of the art exhibition “CARE” by Patricia Piccinini, that shape the contemporary understandings of care, empathy, and the non-human, through the lenses of semiotic and discourse analysis. This research employed a qualitative case study design and portrayed the exhibition as a site of multimodal communication. Through the semiotic analysis, the uses of visual signs including the sculpture forms and the spatial arrangement of the exhibition are examined. Meanwhile, discourse analysis was employed to investigate the narratives, constructed through textual materials and curatorial notes, within the exhibition. The research findings provide insight into the deeper understanding of art exhibitions, especially CARE, as an intricate communicative event. It suggests how CARE emerges as an environment in which storytelling and meaning-making happen instead of solely as a collection of artworks. Finally, in relation to the tourism field, this research highlights the possibility of organizing art exhibitions as (1) powerful storytelling media to attract cultural tourists and (2) a way to enhance the guests' experience through thematic storytelling

DESTINATION ATTACHMENT AS A FOUNDATION FOR RESPONSIBLE TOURISM: THE CASE OF VOLUNTEER TOURISM IN INDONESIA

    Get PDF
This study investigates the factors influencing Indonesian travelers’ intentions to participate in volunteer tourism. Smart-PLS analyzed data to examine the mediating roles of Ascription of Responsibility and Awareness of Consequences in the relationship between Destination Attachment and Intention to Participate in Voluntourism. All hypothesized paths were significant, suggesting a complex interplay of factors influencing Intention. The findings highlight the crucial role of Destination Attachment. A strong emotional connection to a destination fosters a sense of responsibility toward its well-being, which, in turn, strengthens self-belief in one’s ability to contribute positively through voluntourism. Furthermore, a heightened awareness of the positive and negative consequences for the traveler and the destination further strengthens the Intention to participate in it. Interestingly, the path from Destination Attachment to Ascription of Responsibility and then to Intention emerged with the highest coefficient among the two indirect relationships, suggesting that for Indonesians, developing a strong emotional connection to a destination to feel a sense of responsibility towards it might be the most potent driver of volunteer tourism intentions. These insights offer valuable guidance for tourism stakeholders in Indonesia. By fostering emotional connections with destinations and promoting programs that cultivate a sense of responsibility and consciousness in volunteer tourism activities, stakeholders can effectively encourage responsible travel and contribute to the positive development of destinations

The involvement of diaspora communities in this program is expected to create extensive business opportunities, generate employment, contribute to foreign exchange earnings, and foster an entrepreneurship mindset, particularly among the diaspora in South Korea, which has proven to possess a significant diaspora strength. This research utilizes the conceptual framework of national branding, which includes Brand Identity, Brand Image, Brand Purpose, and Brand Quality. These concepts are used to analyze how the branding narrative "Indonesia Spice Up The World" is constructed through the involvement of the Indonesian diaspora in South Korea as brand ambassadors. The primary objective of this research is to explore how the branding narrative of "Indonesia Spice Up the World" is constructed with the involvement of Indonesian diaspora in South Korea as brand ambassadors. The conceptual framework used in this study pertains to nation branding, including Brand Identity, Brand Image, Brand Purpose, and Brand Quality. The research method employed is qualitative with an exploratory case study approach, gathering primary data through interviews with relevant parties, including the Indonesian Embassy in Seoul, Visit Indonesia Tourism Officer (VITO), and representatives of the Indonesian diaspora in Seoul as business actors. From observation and interviews, it was found that the involvement of the diaspora in supporting the narrative branding "Indonesia Spice Up The World" has not been maximized. This is due to several challenges and obstacles in program implementation. Collaboration between the government and the diaspora is considered crucial to ensure that the promotion of Indonesian spice excellence resonates effectively with other countries. Additionally, this research also highlights the importance of integrating service systems, bureaucratic reforms, mental revolutions, cross-sectoral and regulatory synchronization, human resource quality, work culture, infrastructure, facilities, national values, and philosophical principles as strengtheners in building the Indonesian national brand

ROOM BOOKING THROUGH ONLINE TRAVEL AGENT AT ASTON HOTEL PALEMBANG

    Get PDF
Online Travel Agent is an internet-based platform that assists guests in booking hotel rooms. When a guest books a room through an Online Travel Agent, the booking will usually be directly accepted by the hotel if the hotel reservation department still opens the room booking service from the online travel agent. But on the other hand, if the reservation department has closed the online travel agent for booking rooms, guests automatically cannot book rooms because the hotel rooms are fully occupied. The high percentage of room bookings that have exceeded the percentage of sales through online travel agents at Hotel Aston Palembang has caused problems such as overbooking through online travel agents in the reservation department, causing guests who have come and have booked rooms through online travel agents but do not get rooms when checking in due to high occupancy rates. The purpose of this study is to determine the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) in handling room reservations through the Online Travel Agent, the availability of supporting equipment for handling room reservations through the Online Travel Agent and the ability of staff in handling room reservations through the Online Travel Agent. The research method used is a qualitative approach with descriptive methods. Data collection techniques in this qualitative research use observation and interviews. The reservation officer has implemented the Standard operational procedure for booking rooms properly but there are several things that are still not done by the reservation officer such as not confirming in detail the size of the guest bed and not closing the reservation allotment when the hotel is fully booked so that room overbooking occurs and becomes a guest complaint when checking in at Hotel Aston Palembang
