Influence of Prior Conspecific Parasitism in Host Selection by Dodder, Cuscuta Gronovii
No full textCuscuta spp., commonly known as Dodder, is a vining holoparasitic plant that does not perform photosynthesis on its own but rather relies purely on a host for survival. It is understood that Cuscuta must attach to a host within 10-15 days of sprouting to survive, however, the mechanisms behind the host selection preferences are not. This study aims to investigate host selection preferences of Cuscuta seedlings when presented with plants, both preferred hosts and non-hosts, that have been subjected to prior Cuscuta parasitism and plants that have not. Effects of Matcha Green Tea Treatment in Acute Myleloid Leukemia
No full textGreen tea is a natural product that contains polyphenols, which have antioxidant properties. In addition, polyphenols have been shown to have an antiproliferative effect on cancer cells in vitro. In a recent study, matcha green tea treatment inhibited the propagation of breast cancer cells. Our goal is to determine what effects, if any, matcha green tea has on Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) cells. Preliminary results indicate that treatment of THP-1 cells, an AML cell line, with matcha tea extract, results in a dose dependent inhibition of proliferation and cell death. We hope to determine the mechanism underlying these effects by measuring the expression of important cell cycle regulator proteins such as cyclin D1 and cdc6
Groundwater and Karst Feature Relationships of Hiawatha National Forest, Upper Peninsula, Michigan
No full textKarst features are ubiquitous across Michigan’s UP and are developed in Silurian dolostones. The goal of this research is two pronged: to understand regional groundwater flow patterns and grike genesis. In May of 2019 we plan to travel to the UP and take GPS points of sink holes and springs in the area, measure discharge rates, and map suggested flow paths of regional groundwater. We will also be expanding our database of dissolutional features, primarily grikes (dissolutionally enlarged joints). By measuring grike dimensions and orientation, collecting rock samples for petrographic and dissolutional analysis, and collecting weathering and humic material from inside the grikes, we will be able to expand our understanding of grike formational processes in the UP

This presentation will focus on the literature surrounding the use of music in a general education classroom and its potential benefits. Keeping patients free from infection during hospitalization improves patient outcomes and can save millions of dollars in infection related expenses. Implementation of Chlorhexidine Gluconate (CHG) bathing is an infection prevention measure used for patients undergoing an open-heart surgery. This poster will discuss the endeavor to locate, review, and summarize the evidence regarding the use of CHG bathing prior to open-heart surgery and compare the findings with contemporary practice
