This study is geared toward early childhood educators in the Appalachian region.     A GIS Database of Native and Exotic Trees/Woody-shrubs Using Historical and Modern Data

    An interactive map database in ArcGIS of the native and exotic trees/woody-shrubs on Shawnee State University’s campus was developed to help manage campus resources. In order to better maintain the plants on campus a GIS database was created using data from previous courses and student research endeavors. These data sources were verified over the summer of 2018 and spring of 2019 to conform location and species data. This database keeps a record of all of the trees/woody-shrubs on campus including: species, variety, location, height, diameter at breast height, and treatments. This GIS has immediate applications on campus because these trees/woody-shrubs are used in numerous courses on campus. The tree/woody-shrub database will also be used in the campus’ yearly application for Tree Campus USA to the National Arbor Day Foundation. With the development of this GIS tree/woody-shrubs database we hope to provide a template for other universities and businesses to follow

    Programmed Cell Death in a Chick Model of Diabetic Embryopathy.

    Diabetes mellitus in the mother is the one of the most prominent instigators of birth defects. Here we continue an investigation into the effects of increased glucose environment on the developing Gallus gallus domesticus embryo. A 30mM glucose solution was injected into the yolk of Hamburger and Hamilton stage 6 (HH6) embryos. Controls included saline injected and un-injected eggs. At ~HH14 and ~HH18 stages embryos from all treatment groups were assessed for gross malformation. Neural tube deformities and cardiac defects were most frequently observed. We hypothesize that programmed cell death plays a role in the malformations. Embryos from all treatment groups were assayed for apoptotic cells using an in situ cell death detection kit. An expansion of the pattern and intensity of stained apoptotic cells was observed in embryos treated with 30mM glucose compared to controls. Future studies will explore the timing of apoptosis relative to glucose injection

    Microwave Assisted Synthesis of Benzimidazoles From Aromatic Aldehydes

    Benzimidazoles are an important class of nitrogen containing heterocycles that are found in many natural products, pharmaceuticals, and dyes. A number of benzimidazoles have been synthesized by condensing aromatic aldehydes with various diamines. Many of these compounds exhibit desirable optical properties such as those required for organic dyes, organic LED’s (OLED’s), and dye sensitized solar cells (DSSC’s). Several reports have also shown that such compounds may be useful as chemosensors, specifically as anion sensors. This research focused on developing a concise synthetic procedure using microwave reactor technology in order to efficiently produce highly conjugated benzimidazole systems so that their optical properties could be evaluated. This presentation will report on the progress of new compounds that have been synthesized by reacting ortho, meta, and para phtalaldehydes with various diamines using a CEM Microwave Reactor and an ammonium chloride catalyst. In addition, the subsequent UV–Vis and fluorescence spectroscopic studies of these compounds will be presented

    BMP4 Expression in the Embryonic Chick Eye Following Induced Gestational Diabetes

    Human adults with diabetes pose a 60% higher risk for cataract development. Similarly, metabolic conditions in a mother’s womb may induce congenital cataracts- a diagnosis with possible complications such as permanent visual impairment, amblyopia, and nystagmus. It is known that expression of bone morphogenetic protein 4 (BMP4) is needed for proper formation of the eye in Gallus gallus domesticus. The aim of our current research is to create a timeline of when and where BMP4 expression occurs in the developing chick eye. To investigate the effects of BMP4 signaling in early stages of eye development, we will implant BMP4 soaked beads in the chick. Future research will observe the effects of gestational diabetes on expression of BMP4, using a model system formed by treating the developmental environment with glucose solution. We hypothesize that altering the metabolic conditions will result in disruption of the BMP4 mechanism and induction of cataract formation
