How to Solve the Gettier Problem
Epistemology is that part of philosophy which studies knowledge, and tries to answer questions like: What is knowledge? How do we acquire knowledge? How do we know that we do in fact possess knowledge, i.e., how do we know that we know? The longest-standing formulation of the necessary and sufficient conditions for knowledge known to me (pre-dating Plato) is called the Justified True Belief [JTB] theory of knowledge. Gettier’s argument – if it goes through – is a relatively knock-down refutation of the JTB theory of knowledge. Since Gettier’s article was published in 1963, epistemologists have been scrambling either to “fix” JTB so that it avoids Gettier’s problem, to retreat into skepticism, or to erect brand new, Gettier-proof theories from scratch. Finding a Path to Gateway Success: Analyzing the Effectiveness of Corequisite Remediation
As more and more students arrive at college deficient in mathematics skills, colleges and universities are looking for a change in practices for these students. Corequisite remediation is one of the methods being used across the nation. The focus of this study was to compare success rates of students in corequisite gateway courses to students in the standard gateway courses, did these two groups of students complete the follow up course at the same level of success, and did they do as well in the gateway course as students that have traditionally been placed in noncredit bearing remedial courses. Students’ grades were coded to a pass/ fail binary representation with 1 as credit received and 0 as no credit received for the course. χ2 tests, Analysis of Variance, Kruskal-Wallis test, and Fisher’s Exact test were performed. The results showed that there was no statistically significant difference between credit received across the type of gateway course that was taken. The students in corequisite courses and standard gateway courses performed with no statistical difference in the follow up course. Students in corequisite courses did perform statistically different than those in traditional remediation courses
Tomboy, Girl, and Romeos: Transgender Representation in Contemporary European Queer Cinema
In this presentation I examine cinematic transgender representations in Tomboy (France, 2011), Romeos (Germany, 2011), and Girl (Belgium, 2018). Whereas Tomboy tells the story of a gender-ambiguous child, Girl and Romeos focus on the (late) adolescent experience of transitioning from male to female and female to male respectively. The films I examine present complex and empathetic depictions of real-life transgender experiences, transitions and identities by portraying transgender characters who are not only dealing with personal issues surrounding their gender identity but also face external forces constricting freedom of identity and enforcing what Natacha Kennedy has called “cultural cisgenderism,” the “essentializing of gender as binary, biologically determined, fixed at birth [and] immutable.” To this end, all three films present a more complete view of transgender experience, including depictions of sexuality and medicalization and, in the case of Romeos, by showing the protagonist to be part of a transgender as well as a queer community

An Interdisciplinary Look at Galaxy Classification
In the 20th century, galaxy properties have largely been correlated to their shapes. While this works for nearby galaxies, those that are far away require a different method. In this talk, we will show how we can use ideas from chemistry and biology to develop a new method of studying properties of galaxies. Using a sample of 100 galaxies from the state-of-the-art 2.5 meter SDSS telescope, we were able to identify which galaxies are actively forming stars and which are not, even when a clear image is unobtainable. We will also show how one can identify a galaxy’s chemical composition and how that relates to its ability to form stars. Essentially, in this project, we are investigating novel methods to classify galaxies that can be used to study the properties of the nearly 200 Billion galaxies in the universe
