Family Life and Sexual Health Education for Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities
No full textThe purpose of this study is to determine the impact of using the FLASH sexual education curriculum for individuals with intellectual disabilities (ID). The FLASH sexual education curriculum was developed by Public Health – Seattle and King County for use in elementary school, middle school, high school and special education classrooms. The purpose of the curriculum is to help prevent teen pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), and sexual violence (About the FLASH, n.d.). This study looks at applying the special education FLASH curriculum to individuals who are over the age of 18 with mild to moderate ID and determining if the program increases these individuals\u27 knowledge on topics related to sexual education. This study would help determine if the FLASH curriculum is a useful program for this population, and if so, occupational therapists and other professionals could use this program as an option when addressing sexual education for these individuals
Mindset in the Math Classroom

Amino Acid Racemization
No full textRacemization is the process in which one enantiomer of a compound, such as an amino acid, converts to the opposite enantiomer. The degree of racemization is then measured using polarimetry and chromatography. These measurements are then used to estimate the rate at which one enantiomer is converted to the other. We are using the known rate to determine the life span of amino acids found in rock samples from the Bahamas. This will allow us to approximate the age of the rocks, therefore determine the age of the islands
Scholarship of Practice: The Art of Merging Evidence with Doing
No full textScholarship of practice is defined as a process whereby academics, practitioners, and clients collaborate to generate knowledge about what needs to be achieved in clinical practice (Kielhofner, 2005; Forsyth, Mann, & Kielhofner, 2005). Practice-Scholars integrate research in all aspects of practice and leverage partnerships between practitioners, educators, and researchers to produce evidence highly relevant and useful in daily practice. A scholarship of practice model generates evidence through an iterative process informed by clinical questions and client needs. Collaborative partnerships are central to the scholarship of practice, regardless of the discipline, and have the potential to yield major benefits for all involved. This presentation will share definitions, applications, and resources related to the scholarship of practice and practice-scholars, and the power of underpinning these processes with a strong theoretical approach, in this case, the Model of Human Occupation. The discussion will assist participants in identifying strategies to engage in a Scholarship of Practice, develop the role of Practice Scholar in their work, and build communities of practice

The Challenges of Using a Gigapan in Field Based Micro- and Macro-Sized data Collection and Image Processing
No full textGigapan is an up and coming affordable tool in photogrammetry. The high-resolution panoramic images are useful to document geologic features at the macro and micro scales. This project focused on variability and tests the accuracy and usefulness of the Gigapan Epic Pro in multiple settings throughout the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The Gigapan is equipped with an affordable Canon 7T crop sensor DLSR and a Canon 50MM F1.4 lens. Unlike other projects in which the Gigapan was challenged for a particular task, this project challenges the equipment with a variety of obstacles and is designed to present the successes, failures, and modifications needed to both software and hardware. In the field high-resolution microscale images of mid-Silurian Reef Facies were collected. This microscale experiment is used to test the Gigapan’s ability to capture high-detail textural changes in the rock facies. Large macroscale images of a dolomitized rock quarry were collected to determine if the resolution was sufficient to confidently identify the stratigraphy of the rock face from 30 meters away. Many objects with closer proximity to the Gigapan, like trees and large boulders, competed for focus, attempting to draw the attention of the camera away from the rock face. The Gigapan was also challenged with taking a 360-degree image of a littoral cave for which the Gigapan had to take a variety of very dark and very bright images. This test is particularly strenuous on the algorithms used for Gigastitch, Gigapan’s image stitching software

Bordetella Biofilms and Their Interaction with Normal Oral Microbiota
No full textNormal human microbiota has been shown to prevent bacterial diseases such as those caused by Streptococcus pyogenes. Consequently, susceptibility to other diseases may also be linked to the human microbiome. In order to test this, oral microbiota, such as Streptococcus and Lactobacillus, were tested in a biofilm setting with bacteria from the Bordetella genus to determine if certain oral microbiota have the potential to inhibit Bordetella growth and biofilm formation. Understanding the interaction between pathogen and microbiota may lead to new mechanisms of disease prevention
