    A Conceptual Framework for Equation Solving Strategies

    The subject of elementary algebra, hereafter referred to algebra , is considered a fundamental skill in the civilized world. Equation solving in particular is one of the most basic skills that is taught in the subject of algebra. While the axioms and inference rules of algebra are well established and agreed upon, the methods of how to employ these axioms and rules are not taught using an explicit system [Bundy 1975]. It is know that when a person attempts to solve an equation they must be, to some degree, using some implicit system to select each new step. It is evident that they are not simply applying the axioms, theorems and inference rules of algebra randomly and indiscriminately, otherwise their “solutions” would be useless. Two questions then arises: what is the nature of these implicit systems, and how can more be learned about them? While it is clear that one or more systems for solving equations are in use by humans, and by computers that generate human like solutions, these systems are usually opaque or difficult to understand. Humans cannot explain in any great detail how they are able to select the correct steps while solving equations [Bundy 1975]. Software that is designed to mimic human equation solving is usually not inspectable because it is closed source. While research into the nature of systems that can be used both by humans and computers exists, it did not develop the concepts necessary to apply it to education research. [Bundy A 1983]. Therefore, this paper describes an initial conceptual framework for describing different aspects of these systems that can be used by educational researchers

    Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome

    Patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS), as noted by researchers at the Mayo Clinic, is a condition characterized by pain occurring in the anterior portion of the knee specifically in the patellar region. Children and young teenagers are at an increased risk of developing the condition compared to older individuals, and females are two times more likely to develop this syndrome than males. Naturally, considering these chief complaints, one of the primary focuses of physical therapy treatment for PFPS is improving strength and reducing pain. Different options are available to address a loss of strength caused by pain, but the most effective methods among the research includes specific therapeutic exercise programs and proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) techniques. We have designed a mock experiment to discuss the benefits of each of these treatment approaches to find what works the best at improving strength/function and pain

    Detecting Hydrogen in the Milky Way through Spin-flip Transitions

    We plan to contribute to the mapping of our galaxy by measuring hydrogen emissions with a radio telescope. These hydrogen emissions are radio waves that are emitted from a hydrogen atom when the electron spin changes from up to down. This gives off a radio wave with a wavelength of 21 cm and a frequency of 1420 MHz that reveals to us the location of hydrogen throughout our galaxy. This no longer requires expensive equipment and can be achieved by amateur astronomers, mostly using common parts found in a hardware store, and the rest being readily available online

    Metformin Treatment of Acute Myeloid Leukemia Cells

    Metformin is a regularly prescribed medication used to help reduce blood sugar levels within type 2 diabetics. Recent studies have indicated that patients taking Metformin long-term had an overall 31% reduction in cancer risk and cancer related mortality. Recent studies have attributed this effect to the anti-proliferative property when applied to the treatment of cultured cancer cells. However, the mechanism for this action is still elusive. Studies have not been conducted using Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) to date. Thus, the aim of our research is to determine Metformin’s effects when applied to AML while uncovering a mechanism of action. Therefore, closing a small gap in cancer research

    Students in the BUMK4000 Marketing Management course welcomed the directors of two academic programs, Musical Theatre and Medical Laboratory Technology, as clients. Following extensive interviews, the students worked several weeks on a detailed marketing plan for each program. The students updated SSU Marketing and Communications of their efforts and assured their proposals aligned with planned university marketing and branding. The groups presented their plans to the directors at the end of the semester as professionally prepared materials suitable for actual, practical marketing

    Throughout this presentation our group will be discussing the pathophysiology behind Subacromial impingement. We will explain how this injury can occur and what structures around the shoulder as well as inside the joint become injured. We will walk the viewers through a hypothesized experiment explaining what we would have done and the expected results of this hypothesized trial. we will go through the inclusions and exclusions, several different exercise regimens we would have completed, as well as therapeutic interventions that would be the best option for patients experiencing an impingement. The hypothesized results will also be discussed throughout this presentation
