Exploring Appalachian Dialect as a Rule-Governed Variety of American English
No full textThe presentation “Exploring the Appalachian Dialect as a Rule-Governed Variety of American English” includes two independent papers whose primary goal is a linguistic analysis of the Appalachian dialect (AppE) in terms of its grammatical sub-systems including phonology, morphology, syntax, and vocabulary. The central argument developed in the paper is that this dialect is a rule- governed variety as any other dialect of American English, which is supported throughout the paper with multiple primary and secondary sources. The primary sources of the study came from the interviews conducted with the speakers of AppE, as well as from Giardina’s novel and the U-Tube videos. The implications of this research are significant for literacy teaching purposes in K-12 continuum where teachers should encourage students to use their non-standard dialect on school premises and develop multi-dialectal competence (diaglossia) so that the students learn standard variety while retaining a non-standard variety as well

Anxiety and stress effect a large percentage of the population and CBD is here to help people live a better life. Cannabidiol is even being studied to see how CBD therapy can be effective with treating tooth decay which is a huge breakthrough in the dental world and in natural medicine. CBD comes in many forms, so people can have different options for the way that they want to administer the CBD oil. It is important to know that CBD oil is not used to create a high and does not contain THC which is the chemical used to create a “high” in cannabis. CBD works by creating an effect on serotonin in the brain as well as brain receptors. This is a completely natural option and very beneficial in the treatment of patients with oral health concerns
The Determinants of Acceptance and Intention to use Autonomous Vehicles and its Implication on the Auto Insurance Industry
Get PDFAutonomous vehicles are an emerging new technology that have sparked the interest of the general public in recent years. Their arrival impacts a wide range of groups, the auto insurance industry being one example. However, many challenges exist that may prevent autonomous vehicles from becoming a part of everyday life. This study aimed to determine factors that influence the acceptance and intention to use autonomous vehicles, as well as provide a discussion on various implications in the auto insurance industry. Participants were recruited to participate in completing a short questionnaire to express their attitudes and opinions about autonomous vehicles. By using factor analysis and regression techniques to perform statistical analyses, results indicated many non-statistically significant results to determine influential factors within the theoretical model presented. These results, however, are only a single data point in time and should not be considered as fact. Many other studies indicated that the factors used in this study showed statistically significant results in determining the acceptance and intention to use autonomous vehicles. Further research can build upon the framework presented in this study to develop a more predictive model in determining factors that influence acceptance and intention to use autonomous vehicles
Evaluating the Florida Postsecondary Education Readiness Test for Bias: An Adaptation of the Meade-Fetzer Updated Cleary Method
Get PDFIn 2008, the Florida Senate enacted a College and Career Readiness Initiative which saw the creation of a statewide common placement test: the Postsecondary Education Readiness Test, or PERT. However, as of 2021, there is only one publicly available study on the predictive validity of the PERT and none on the potential for Test Bias. This study aimed to detect Adam Meade and Michael Fetzer s definition of Test Bias, a systematic error in how a test measures performance for a particular group, using their updated version of the standard and widely-accepted Cleary Regression Method. The expectation was that either Florida s efforts in the realm of access to higher education would be validated by this study or the need to more deeply research the PERT would be made obvious. A Composite PERT score, created by averaging the scores of the three PERT subsections Math, Reading, and Writing for each student, was used to predict first-year college GPA for the demographic variables Gender and Race using Gender, Composite, and the Gender-Composite interaction effect in accordance with the Cleary Method. While no evidence was found that Test Bias exists for Female, Black, or Underrepresented race students, there was evidence that PERT exhibits Test Bias for Hispanic students. This does not imply that the PERT should be immediately discontinued, but that more studies need to be conducted in order to elucidate this Test Bias. Such studies also need to be made publicly available in order to assuage any concerns the Florida public may have towards this ubiquitous exam
Community Partnering at Greenlawn Cemetery, Portsmouth, Ohio: Tree Trails for Education, Health, Recreation, and Tourism
No full textGreen spaces are an essential component in facilitating outdoor activities and active lifestyles, especially in urban areas. Greenlawn Cemetery is one of the oldest and largest public green spaces in Portsmouth, Ohio and acts as a natural arboretum. A complete census of woody plants was conducted in Greenlawn Cemetery in fall 2020. Data were compiled and organized to develop trails that are available for educational, health, recreational, and tourism purposes through a website: www.shawnee.edu/trees. In all, 576 trees and shrubs representing 76 species were physically tagged and geolocated in a database which contained species, tree health, and cultural, historical, and ecological significance. To date, two tree trails have been developed, with others planned or under construction

Synthesis of Magnesium and Zinc Metalloporphyrins for Dye-sensitized Solar Cells
No full textAnthropogenic climate change is an issue. The switch to renewable and non-carbon-generating energy sources requires multiple functioning sources ranging from wind and water to sunlight. While most renewables and nuclear energy produce moderate to high energy conversion yields sunlight is one of the least efficient yet readily abundant sources. Current research on improving this yield comes from Perovskite and dye-sensitized solar cells. Most research with dye-sensitized solar cells use porphyrins coordinated with zinc. Chlorophylls, the natural analogues to porphyrins, instead use magnesium. To understand the effect these metals have on energy conversion efficiency multiple porphyrin dyes were made. Using readily available resources of pyrrole and different benzaldehydes porphyrin rings were synthesized then chelated to magnesium or zinc. The produced dyes were labeled and catalogued for future use in assembly and efficiency testing of solar cells

No full textThe patient is a 64 year old male who contracted Covid earlier this year. He was admitted for shortness of breath on his home oxygen at 2lpm nasal cannula. Patient has a history of Black Lung, Congestive Heart Failure, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and Pulmonary Hypertension. A month later the patient required a higher demand of oxygenation because of constant shortness of breath. He was then taken off the regular nasal cannula and placed on a higher flow oxygen delivery device. A few days later the high flow oxygen was not enough and due to hypercapnic respiratory failure he was intubated and placed on continuous mechanical ventilation. After multiple failed attempts to wean the patient from mechanical ventilation, the family decided to make him comfort care and extubate him terminally
Determination of Bacterial Gelatinase Production By Zymography
No full textStreptococcus pyogenes has been shown to produce an extracellular cysteine protease which degrades gelatin, fibronectin, collagen, and other extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins. Degradation of the ECM allows bacteria to more easily invade tissues, which may lead to increased virulence. The production of gelatin-degrading enzymes was examined in Escherichia coli and Streptococcus pyogenes using zymography. By incorporation of gelatin into polyacrylamide gels, zymograms can determine the presence of active enzymes that degrade gelatin. This information may be useful in exploring the role of gelatinases in bacterial pathogenicity

The organization hoped to assess whether customers know what their profits are used for, what makes customers shop at the store, and find evidence that supports prior notions associated with the demographics and psychographics of shoppers. Goodwill agreed to participate in an agency project with SSU students in BUMK 3200 Consumer Behavior. The team evaluated Goodwill’s situation and proposed a field behavior study and a voluntary, nine-question customer survey with an incentive for shoppers. The live proposal to Goodwill’s executive director included the method, subjects/participants, and offered a suggested way to analyze the findings using each of these instruments
