Various Writing Strategies Improve Grades and Student’s Writing Attitude
No full textOften students have struggled in their writing confidence in an English Language Arts classroom, and many do not see themselves as strong, capable writers. However, instructional strategies used in the classroom can make or break students\u27 improvement. Writing can be significantly improved by frequent practice and varied instruction. Exploring various instructional writing strategies and their effects can help improve how students see their writing. While analyzing the established literature from assorted levels of education, this research addresses the results of incorporating specific strategies in an active classroom. The effects of traditional writing strategies, like the 5E model and peer reviews, are paired with more modern and accommodating approaches, like using social media and wikis in research. How will these five strategies influence the way writing is completed and perceived in a Southern Ohio high school ELA classroom when more writing is implemented

No full textDuring the first of the year, a 27 year old white female presented to the emergency department. Upon admission, the patient was complaining of generalized weakness along with nausea and loss of appetite. The patient has a history of Felty Syndrome, which is a disorder that includes rheumatoid arthritis and splenomegaly, along with an extensive list of other comorbidities. The patient has a history of tracheostomy and wears oxygen via tracheostomy mask. After a thorough assessment, it was found that she was experiencing these symptoms due to shock. She was then admitted into the Intensive Care Unit with the primary diagnoses of septic shock with possible multiple sources of sepsis along with bilateral multilobar pneumonia. The patient started out on a tracheostomy collar but was eventually placed on the ventilator due to ongoing issues with hypertension and hypercapnic respiratory failure. She remained on the ventilator for two days until she was transferred out to another facility for further treatment
Do High School Math Students learn better Face-to-face or Remotely?
No full textA recent increase of students completing their classwork online or remotely, has caused an associated decrease in students\u27 grade averages in high school math classes. Since many educators are not familiar with implementing effective instructional strategies in an online environment, it is important for teachers and educators to understand the pros and cons that come along with the virtual environment. By comparing grade averages from previous years with the thoughts and feelings that students have towards online or remote learning, educators can adjust the instructional strategies they incorporate to improve the online experience their students are receiving. Since online learning is becoming the new normal for many students and teachers the advantages and disadvantages from this study need to be addressed in order to improve future online learning
Reading Comprehensions in the Social Studies Classroom
No full textHistory class has long been thought to be static, filled with lectures and notes. In today’s classroom, this is no longer feasible. Placing primary documents in the hands of students is vitally important and can increase their engagement with the content. There certainly is no shortage of comprehension strategies since it was recognized as a key development piece for students’ learning abilities but implementing them into a history class is quite often overlooked. This study looked at 3 of the most common comprehension strategies and how they impact learning in the history class. These strategies include: KWL charts, Jigsaws, and Pre-loaded reading questions. The students took a benchmark assessment and then read 3 different primary sources, completed the activities that would follow and were benchmarked again
Effects of Sports and Student Motivation on Academic Success
Get PDFIn the past 50 years, high school sports have been on the rise with more and more students deciding to participate in a high school sport. Because of this, it is important that schools, parents, and students look at the research behind how sport participation effects academic success. There have been studies that show sports having a positive effect on academic success, there have been studies that have shown that the intrinsic motivation is strongly correlated with academic success, and there have been studies that have shown that sport participation increases motivation to perform. The current study seeks to bridge the gap between the three components of sport participation, student motivation, and academic success. The current study examines how student motivation in the classroom (intrinsic, extrinsic, and amotivation) and sport participation (team, individual, both, or none) affects academic success. The study was conducted at Lutheran West High School by means of gathering data on student GPAs, sports participation, and type of motivation. Type of motivation was gathered through student surveys to find the levels of motivation a student perceives of themselves and teacher surveys to find the level of motivation the teacher perceives of the student. Statistical techniques of multiple regression, factor analysis, correlation tests, and ANOVA techniques were used to test and answer the research questions. The study found that there is no direct relationship between sport participation and academic success. However, the study found a strong positive relationship between motivation (not necessarily intrinsic or extrinsic) and academic success. The study also found a positive relationship between sports and motivation. Thus, the study argues to have found an indirect relationship with academics and sport participation by interpreting that sport participation increases motivation and motivation increases academic iv success. The Self-Determination Theory states that those who are involved in environments that promote competence, autonomy, and relatedness, have a higher likelihood of possessing intrinsic motivation. Research shows that higher levels of intrinsic motivation increases academic success. Thus, creating environments that promote competence, autonomy, and relatedness are good for academic success. It could be possible that sports are one of these environments, but are not the only one. It is shown in the current study that motivation plays a strong positive role in academic success. The current study concludes that schools should continue to recommend and encourage environments that promote competence, autonomy, and relatedness to increase student motivation. Sports could be promoted as one of these environments that help students increase their motivation to increase their academic success
Dissolution of Carbonate Rocks in a Laboratory Setting: Rates and Textures
No full textDetermining the dissolution rates of carbonate rocks is vital to advancing our understanding of cave, karst, and landscape processes. Furthermore, the role of carbonate dissolution is important for the global carbon budget and climate change. A laboratory experiment was setup to calculate the dissolution rates of two whole rock carbonate samples with different petrographic makeup (ooids and brachiopods). The carbonate rock samples were also explored under a scanning electron microscope to evaluate the textures that developed after dissolution The oolitic limestone dissolved at a rate of 1579 cm yr−1, and the pentamerous limestone (dolostone) dissolved at a rate of 799 cm yr−1. Both rocks did not dissolve evenly across their surface as indicated by scanning electron microscopy, it appears the allochems dissolved preferentially to the matrix/cement of the rocks and that some mechanical weathering happened as well. This work reports that the petrography and mineralogy of carbonate rocks is important to consider when exploring the cave, karst, and landscape evolution and that attention should be paid to the petrography of carbonate rocks when considering the global carbon budget

Each journey upholds the unique aspects of women\u27s life. This book analytically examines the narratives of eleven women from the Mahabharata in the historical context as well as in association with religious and cultural practices. Lavanya Vemsani brings together history, myth, religion, and practice to arrive at a comprehensive understanding of the history of Hindu women, as well as their significance within religious Indian culture. Additionally, Vemsani provides important perspective for understanding the enduring legacy of these women in popular culture and modern society. Lavanya Vemsani is Professor of History at Shawnee State University, USA. Her publications include Modern Hinduism in Text and Context, Krishna in History, Thought, and Culture, and Hindu and Jain Mythology of Balarama. Vemsani is President of the Ohio Academy of History. She is the Editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Indic Religions and Associate Editor of Air Force Journal of Indo-Pacific Affairs, and Canadian Journal of History.
