    How Does Class Size Effect Student Success in a High School Math Class?

    The number of students in high school math classrooms were drastically smaller during the 2020-2021 global pandemic “Coronavirus’. Research done in a southern Ohio school district, evaluated how the number of students in each class period affects the amount of individual participation and student interactions. The research also determined how overall class averages differed depending on class size. The classes continued to get smaller due to students transitioning to online learning throughout the year. Research shows that the online students are affected by the lack of student interactions, and lack of ability to participate. With that being said, setting up classes with the proper number of students is setting up those students for academic success. This prompts the question, what is the most ideal class size for high school math students to achieve said, academic success

    Cancelling Controversy: The Symptoms of Political Perfection

    This presentation seeks to examine what cancel culture encompasses, its implications, and its reason for development. It assesses the positives and negatives of cancel culture in addition to the reasons it should and should not continue. It addresses the way cancel culture is used to forward personal agendas both politically and otherwise, however, that is not its focus. Its focus is to argue the chosen stance and to address the opposing arguments. The presentation gives an in-depth rebuttal explaining why many of the opposing arguments are both irrelevant and inaccurate. A scientific behavioral analysis is considered in the argument against cancel culture. The presentation holds that cancel culture should not be an acceptable means of censorship. In addition, it holds that thousands of unelected “officials” should not be given the power to silence the voices of individuals with beliefs in opposition to their own

    individual Sports vs Team Sports: GPA In and Out of Athletic Season

    Student-athletes are a unique group of individuals that can always use help succeeding academically. Teachers and coaches want to help their students and student-athletes succeed both on and off the playing field. This study aims to determine when student­athletes need the most academic support-during competition season or during the off season-and what specific student-athletes need that academic support. The GPAs of student-athletes who played either a fall or a spring sport, but not both, were examined to determine if there was a difference in GP A when the student-athletes were in season as compared to out of competition season. The results were further broken down by individual sports compared to team sports and male student-athletes compared to female student-athletes. This study also seeks to predict high school GP A from a number of factors, including gender, race, and sport type, among others. Paired sample t-tests, independent sample t-tests, and multiple regression techniques were utilized to analyze the results. A significant difference was found between in season GP A and out of season GP A, as well as between team sports and individual sports, and between male and female student-athletes. Race was the most influential variable when predicting high school GP A. The results suggest that student-athletes need more academic support during the off season. Male student-athletes and team sport student-athletes could also use more academic support. On this basis, teachers and coaches know what student-athletes need more academic support and when

    At the end of 2020, our patient was admitted into the emergency department with complaints of abdominal pain, nausea, and a headache. She recently retuned back from her trip over seas the day before. Her symptoms had started 1-2 weeks ago while overseas, she went to the hospital there and concurred the diagnosis of a parasite. Physicians here seen no evidence of her ever having a parasite. At the end of 2020, she was taken to get a subtotal colectomy after iatrogenic cecal perforation. Despite their best efforts the patients had to sent back into to surgery at the beginning of 2021 for an exploratory laparotomy with takedown of necrotic ileostomy, extensive lysis of adhesions and placement of temporary closure device as complete closure was unable to obtain due to a frozen abdomen. Our patient was sought out to be too critical to begin mechanical ventilation liberation, and remain intubated for the duration of their hospital stay. Due to all of the medical problems the family decided to make her a “Do Not Resuscitate” order (DNR). At the beginning of 2021, the patient was terminally extubated and passed peacefully at 7:13 a.m

    Addressing sexuality and sexual education for adults with intellectual disabilities: Perspectives of Ohio occupational therapy practitioners

    The purpose of this study was to describe practice patterns of occupational therapy practitioners when addressing sexual health education needs of their adult clients with intellectual disabilities. A descriptive online survey consisting of twenty-eight items was distributed via email to occupational therapy practitioners (OTR or COTA) licensed in the state of Ohio. Therapists who had provided occupational therapy services to adults with intellectual disabilities at any point in their career were invited to participate. Survey items focused on practitioners’ views and clinical experiences regarding sexuality, sexual health education, and interventions provided for this population. Of the 6,791 initial surveys distributed, researchers received a raw response of 235 respondents. Initial results suggest that practitioners recognize the importance of sexual education for this population, feel underprepared to provide this content in their interventions, and reported minimal experience in this area of intervention

    Perspectives on Extraterrestrial (alien) Civilizations

    The search for extraterrestrial (alien) civilizations has long fascinated people. We are interested in factors that predict whether people are likely to be generally supportive of efforts such as, for example, the SETI program or funding Harvard Professor Avi Loeb’s idea to search for “space junk” artifacts. Our data collection is ongoing, and we forecast that the following set of beliefs and personal qualities will be most predictive of supporting the search. Predictive beliefs should include the degree to which people believe the following: that extraterrestrial civilizations exist; that there would be benefits to humanity if we discovered an extraterrestrial civilization. Other predictive qualities include the degree to which someone is: higher on the trait of openness to experience; lower on the trait of anxiety; higher on social support (as it relates to interest in extraterrestrials); higher on fandom of science fiction; higher on preexisting contemplation of the topic of extraterrestrial civilizations

    Supporting Meaningful Engagement in Hospice Care Centers: A Program Evaluation, Phase 2

    This study aimed to gain an understanding student experiences participating in the “Making Days Meaningful” program, a partnership between SSU occupational therapy programs and local inpatient hospice services. The program focuses on creating dementia friendly services for respite patients. A twenty item online survey was used to assess the perceptions of the participating students about the “Making Days Meaningful” as a learning experience. Ninety students were invited to participate, and the survey was accessed by forty-three participants. Forty-two participants completed the survey, and responses revealed that the majority of the reported a positive learning experience. A common theme of open-ended responses were recommendations for increased training about using the available resources, more skills for responding to needs of patients with dementia, and greater understanding of the program by staff working at the facility. The results of survey will inform ongoing improvements for this interprofessional service learning experience

    Investigation of Casual Factors Underlying Mammalian Mortality in Discarded Containers Improperly discarded containers are attractive to wildlife and contribute to their mortality. Reasons underlying the attraction may be multifactorial. What is not clear is why certain mammals, once inside, are unable to escape. Our study seeks to identify factors that increase the likelihood of mortality in containers by monitoring a series of established transects mimicking normal human littering activity. Specifically, we are investigating the influence of container parent material (type), opening size, widest diameter, container length, angle of opening in relation to the terrestrial surface, internal surface and air temperature, humidity accumulation, and the influence of residues. Thirteen distinct container types are arranged in a paired system in each of four transects, established in two different habitat types. Trail cameras capture activity noninvasively. Measurements, including those listed, will be taken between once to three times weekly over the course of a year

    An Investigation of Arthropod Assemblages on Flowering Wingstem

    With a landscape, each plant species serves as the basis of a unique trophic cascade brought about through coevolution. Even plants having little instrumental value provide habitat space, protection, and food resources for a host of fauna. One such plant species is Verbesina alternifolia, or wingstem. We investigated the arthropod assemblages associated with blooming V. alternfolia along forest ecotones in 2020. Sweep net samples were collected from 50 stems at each of three locations, namely Shawnee State Forest, Hanging Rock Nature Preserve, and Pike Lake State Park, in southern Ohio. Collection efforts yielded more than 600 specimens. Arthropods were preserved and are being identified to the lowest possible taxonomic level. Preliminary findings indicate that blooming V. alternfolia supports a rich arthropod trophic cascade with multiple species found across all collection locations. Once all taxonomic identifications are completed, Simpson’s diversity index will be use to statistically compare diversity among sites
