Reducing Socially Inappropriate Behaviors
Primary aged students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), who have little to no communication skills often exhibit a higher rate of self-stimulatory behavior than their typically developing peers. Self-stimulatory behavior (SSB), specifically masturbation, is not considered socially acceptable. This study used an AB single subject research design to help a second grade student in a rural, Kentucky school increase socially appropriate behavior by decreasing instances of self-touching while simultaneously increasing more productive behaviors. Overcorrection with behavior cards and differential reinforcement of incompatible behaviors (DRI), used in tandem, to decrease frequency of self touching while also increasing the use of her hands in a socially acceptable manner (i.e playing with a rain stick or a book with different textures). Results show that this approach was effective in reducing the amount of frequency of the self-stimulatory behavior and increasing the socially appropriate behaviors over the course of the study

Effects of Matcha Green Tea in Acute Myeloid Leukemia
Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a cancer of the bone marrow and blood that targets the body’s myeloblasts, red blood cells, and platelets, leading to anemia and weakness. These non-functional cancerous cells will continue to multiply and inhibit the function of healthy cells. This will eventually lead to immune system failure and other complications. AML has affected approximately twenty thousand individuals in 2021 alone and the five-year relative survival rate for this disease from 2011-2017 was a mere 29.5%. As a result, new treatment options are paramount. Our data has shown an inverse relationship with AML cell proliferation and the concentration of Matcha green tea (MGT). We have also observed cell death with high doses of MGT. Future research will focus on the mechanisms of MGT effects and what components of the tea influence these results
Synthesis of Nickel Diimine Dye Complexes for Use in Solar Cells
In recent years, dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSC) have been studied using various transition metals such as ruthenium, osmium, and platinum as sensitizers. However, these transition-metal dye molecules often require complicated synthetic pathways that can be quite expensive. As a result, this study focuses on using nickel as an alternate inexpensive transition metal with a simpler synthetic pathway. In particular, the study will use nickel diimine complexes as sensitizers for the formation of DSSC. This investigation will include determining the best synthetic route of nickel diimine complexes, Ni(3,3’-dcbpy)qdt, Ni(4,4’-dcbpy)qdt, and Ni(5,5’-dcbpy)qdt where dcbpy = dicarboxy-2,2’-bipyridine (with different steric conformations on the nickel diimine ligands) and qdt = quinoxaline-2,3-dithiolate, and maximizing their corresponding efficiencies. New compounds were experimented in place of the quinoxaline-2,3-dithiol (qdt) to enhance the readings of the solar cell and the preservation of the conductive dye
Investigating Cut-point Methods in ROC Analysis: A Critique of Alternative Approaches
In 2017, Ilker Unal presented the Index of Union method for obtaining optimal cut-points in ROC analysis and claimed that it outperformed other methods, including the historied Youden Index. This is an investigation into that claim using generated data. It specifically pits the Youden Index method against the Index of Union (IU) method under various circumstances. The data sets have different ratios of diseased and non-diseased data points along with different ratios of true and false results based on a theoretical true cutpoint. The data was analyzed to see if any patterns emerged as to when the Youden Index obtain a cut-point closer to the theoretical true cut-point and when the IU method does. Although the IU method performed better in the majority of data sets, the Youden Index method did outperform the IU method at times. The IU method had a clear advantage in the case that the specificity and sensitivity were equal, while the Youden Index had an advantage when the area under the ROC curve was between 0.27 and 0.47. The results imply that there is good reason for the uncertainty in the landscape of methods for obtaining optimal cut-points, but there may be a good argument as to when to use one over another. More research should be done into the relationship between the area under the curve and these methods. In the meantime, medical researchers should not rely on a single method but rather take into the range of cut-points obtained by various methods
Community Colleges & Athletics: Academic Success of Student-Athletes
This research examines the relationship between community colleges and athletics. There is little research done on the interaction between athletes, on-campus housing, and community colleges. Studies show that the more students are involved in the college, the more likely they are to stay at the school they are at and succeed academically. Little research is done at community colleges because they often lack athletics or housing, but there is a growth in the number of athletic teams in the junior college system as well as the number of schools that provide housing for their students. This research is to help bridge the gap. Community colleges are becoming more sought out by student-athletes because it helps them grow as an athlete, helps them improve their academics, and provides a place for them to play for at least two more years beyond high school.
The data for this study was from Iowa Lakes Community College, a small rural school in Iowa that has both athletics and on-campus housing. Information such as athletic participation, housing status, gender, socioeconomic status, overall GPA, term GPA, and the type of degree being obtained were provided. Using R, the three research questions were analyzed. A multiple regression test, a two-way ANOVA, a one-way ANOVA, and t-tests were all performed to get the results of this research.
The findings of the research show that the interaction between on-campus housing, athletic participation, gender, SES, and degree being sought out are all categorical predictors of overall GPA. There were also findings that the interaction of athletic participation and housing status were not significant predictors of overall GPA, but athletic participation is a significant predictor of overall GPA. It was also discovered that in-season athletes had a lower overall GPA compared to when they were out-of-season.
The implications of the results show that at Iowa Lakes Community College, the student-athletes tend to have a higher overall GPA. This may have to do that the student-athletes tend to feel more involved and a part of the school community. The results also show that there is also a difference for in-season and out-of-season GPAs, which helps bring attention to how students may need more help and attention in the classroom during the time they are competing because they spend a lot of time focusing on how they are competing

Cognitive and Non-Cognitive Predictors of Academic Success in Undergraduate Mathematics Courses
The changes in student demographics and course modality led the researcher to examine cognitive and non-cognitive predictors of academic success in undergraduate mathematics courses. Linear regression analyses were used to determine if ACT and mathematics subscore, high school grade point average, GRIT Gauge® score, age and socioeconomic status were significant predictors of academic success in undergraduate mathematics courses. The results indicated that only high school grade point average was a significant predictor of academic success. In addition, independent samples t-tests were used to determine if there was a statistically significant difference in the mean GRIT® score between STEM and non-STEM majors, underclassman and upperclassman as well as between students enrolled in the mathematics course in an online or face to face modality. No statistically significant differences were found between any of the groups. The results of this study indicate that high school grade point average can be used to predict academic success in an initial mathematics course at a university
Students Interests in Relation to the Literary Canon
Students in today’s society have changing interests than what may be provided for them in an English Language Arts (ELA) classroom. Most classroom texts that are selected are pulled from the literary canon which more often than not, contradicts students interests. This research dives into literature discussing the literary canon and how it maintains relevance in an ELA classroom, but it also uncovers why we need to move away from the canon. Action-based research is conducted to understand students\u27 interests by surveying eighth grade ELA students in a rural school district. Their interests and texts they selected for Accelerated Reader (AR) were documented to see if they align with the contents of the canon. This research will attempt to uncover how students of today’s society and their interests misalign with the contents of the literary canon and what is being taught in ELA classrooms, should change to cater those needs
