Is an Active Learning Environment More Effective at Motivating the Students than a Traditional Classroom?
One major problem that teachers in many schools experience is maintaining student engagement. Finding a way to peak the students’ interest, while still making sure they understand and learn the material can be a challenge. The style of classroom that the teacher decides to have can drastically affect the learning environment and either increase or decrease the students’ focus. Most classrooms follow fairly closely to that of a traditional classroom, but this research looks at the effectiveness of an active learning environment to create more engagement. In order to see how effective this idea is, an action research project will be conducted. It is important to note that in this type of environment the teacher will use forms of active learning to teach the students rather than traditional. To see if this is the solution, my research will involve making lessons designed to fit the active learning educational methods
Intake Information Gathering: Practice Patterns of Pediatric Occupational Therapists
Purpose: This study aims to understand the patterns of outpatient, pediatric occupational therapists when distributing and collecting intake information for their clientele. Methods: This study utilized a non-experimental descriptive design to discover trends within the specific area of practice. The online platform “SurveyMonkey” was the application used to create the survey and excel was used to analyze the descriptive statistics. The 27-question survey was delivered through five separate social media groups and distributed via snowball sampling. The duration of the survey was from October 2021 through December 2021 and a total of 56-occupational therapists participated. Results: The results of the study identified four practice patterns among pediatric occupational therapists. First, the most common form of intake paperwork used among the sample were standard clinic forms distributed via email which was the most common method of delivery. Second, the most common timeframe of delivery and return was during the first appointment with the occupational therapist. Additionally, the data showed discrepancies between form choice when practitioners choose the form versus when the clinics or organizations have a standard form. Finally, the data showed a strong relationship between years of practice and assessment inclusion for intake documentation. Conclusions: This is an ongoing research study, therefore, conclusions will be added once the study is complete
Four-Site
Four-Site was introduced in The Hitch-hiker\u27s Guide to Artificial Intelligence by Richard Forsyth and Chris Naylor (1985). Four-Site is played on a 6x6 board and has a similar play style to tic-tac-toe or Connect Four in which each player takes turns placing pieces. The catch is that in each turn the player can only choose the row or column that their piece goes in and their opponent chooses the space. The player who manages to get 4 in a row first wins the game. For this project, we created a simple AI opponent after investigating math behind the game to better understand how to play efficiently. We then used observations made playing against a random AI and the research into the math of the game to make a superior version of the AI
Extracurricular activities and their effects on Edgerton High School students’ Geometry State Test Scores
Extracurricular activities play a big role in developing some students into well-rounded adults, while other students choose to not participate in any. This study was performed to show a specific relationship between participating in extracurricular activities and higher test scores on the geometry state test in Ohio. This study was conducted at a rural high school in northwest Ohio, with a sample of 145 students who took both the geometry state test and the eighth-grade standardized test. With this data and the data of which of these students participated in which extracurricular activity, if any, this study could then answer questions about what are some significant predictors of the geometry state test scores or if being involved in a certain type of extracurricular activity has a significantly different mean geometry state test score. Results were found by running two different tests in the data. For the first result, the geometry state test scores were recoded to be zero if the score indicated that the student failed or one of the scores indicated that the student passed. Then a Logistic Regression model was run to find any significant predictors for the geometry state test scores from gender, the student’s eighth-grade standardized math scores, or the type of extracurricular activity a student was involved in. The next test was an ANOVA model to look at the differences in mean scores across the different types of extracurricular activities. From these two tests, there was a small but significant relationship showing that participating in an extracurricular activity is beneficial for students’ geometry state test scores. This implies that students at Edgerton High School should be a part of some type of extracurricular activity if they would want to increase their geometry state test scores. The two types that showed the most promise were the individual-based extracurricular activities (Cross-country, Golf, Wrestling, Track) and the team-based extracurricular activities (Football, Volleyball, Basketball, Softball, Baseball)
The Influence of Bilingualism on Mathematical Achievement: An Analysis Across Different Countries
The effects of bilingualism, socioeconomic status, parental education, parental income, and a child’s positive attitude on mathematical achievement have been quite disputed topics during the past decades. Using the foundations of Cummins’ threshold and developmental interdependence hypotheses, Coleman’s theory on social capital, Vygotsky’s theory on language, and the functional attitude theory, this study investigates if and how effectively these attributes predict mathematical achievement in fourth-grade students. Using the latest iteration of the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study, multiple regression models evaluate the consequences of multiple language use, individual social standing, and positive attitude effects on mathematical achievement with a large sample size including seven countries. With exceptions in country comparisons, the results yielded no mathematical achievement advantages for bilinguals, supporting Strobel’s 2016 study. However, extreme achievement benefits emerged from students who possessed positive attitudes towards mathematics, at least one highly educated parent, and at least one parent obtaining a high income. Additionally, no net gains surfaced from regression models including multiple language use and positive attitudes, presenting new findings in this area of research. These results imply parental education/income are crucial in early development and positive attitudes are highly contagious, both increasing mathematical achievement in young children
Master of Occupational Therapy Students\u27 Use of Problem-Solving Strategies of Clinical Reasoning Identified Following Level II Fieldwork
Abstract
A pre-experimental, quantitative, descriptive study was completed to identify patterns of the problem-solving strategies used in the clinical reasoning process by master of occupational therapy students during level II fieldwork placement. The research team developed a survey including 7 demographic questions with 12 problem-solving strategy questions created around the concepts of: algorithm, heuristic, trial and error, and insight. The survey was created in SurveyMonkey and the link to the survey was sent to 3 master of occupational therapy programs. Only students who had completed level II fieldwork placement, prior to taking the national board certification exam, were included. Eleven occupational therapy students completed the survey. Survey results found the pattern of trial and error as the most used problem-solving strategy and heuristic as the least. Results of this study suggest further research exploring the gap in knowledge of the clinical reasoning use of occupational therapy students is needed.

Back to the Wild: A Comparative Study of the Antimicrobial Properties of Humulus lupulus
Antibiotic resistance is a rapidly growing issue in the medical field, and the need for new, effective, and sustainable disinfectants has become apparent. Phytochemicals produced in the fruiting structures of Humulus lupulus, common hops, have long demonstrated antimicrobial properties utilized in brewing beer, and have recently been explored as ‘green’ disinfectants. However, varietal differences, especially including wild relatives of cultivated varieties, have not been thoroughly explored. Fruiting cones of six wild hop strains and three commercial cultivars were collected, respectively, from natural field locations and an established research plot in Southern Ohio. Phytochemicals were extracted, concentrated, and utilized to challenge Staphylococcus aureus using Minimum Bactericidal Concentration tests. Preliminary results indicate phenotypic differences between strains in the amounts and types of phytochemicals extracted and their antimicrobial efficacies
Exploring Spanglish: Southern Ohioan Style
The Paper “Exploring Spanglish: Southern Ohioan Style” explores Spanglish, which is a variety of American English (AE) spoken by native speakers of Spanish who also develop fluency in English as a Second Language (ESL). The study is based on a primary source, which was collected from a speaker of Spanglish who has lived in the USA since the age of eleven. Using substantial background research, the paper dissects the linguistic patterns of code-switching (CS) from AE to Spanish and shows that switches are both intra- and inter-sentential. This pattern of CS indicates that the speaker is highly fluent in both English and Spanish. Therefore, the paper argues that CS does not happen due to competence deficit and results of research are extended to apply to the pedagogical approaches of teaching Language Arts in schools, which should respect and emphasize the role of L1 in learning and developing L2 competence

An Examination of the Effectiveness of Digital Tools in the Classroom
Technology has arguably become even more prevalent in classrooms. Technology enables students to learn and communicate in different ways. Some schools provide students with devices such as computers or tablets, which allows for the opportunity to use digital tools. This has ultimately transformed education. This research focuses on what factors play into the use of digital tools. The study that is a part of this research highlights the use of two digital tools: Gimkit and Commonlit, and how they are being used in a middle school reading and social studies classroom. These two digital tools will be studied to determine how effective they are. Some examples of elements of the digital tools that will determine how effective they are is what features the tools offer and what cons and benefits they have. As an educator, it\u27s essential to determine what is effective to ensure students are receiving a quality education
