    L.J. Emory Publishing Co.: Expansion to U.S. Regional Midwest and The Netherlands

    National bestselling author Serena B. Miller owns the rights to her published works in Amish fiction, historical romance, mystery and children’s works. The L.J. Emory publishing company partnered with a marketing class in an agency project to develop marketing research instruments. The company deployed the instruments, gathered the data and approached the SSU Marketing program in the School of Business for participation in a second agency project to use the data to build a strategic plan. BUMK 4000 Marketing Management students evaluated the data and presented a package and live proposal to the company owners suggesting new ways to expand in the U.S. Midwest and a pilot project to expand internationally, targeting The Netherlands. The proposal included sample social media posts, email drip campaign messages and related promotional materials in English and Dutch

    One of the biggest limiting factors in terms of literacy with modern students is arguably participation and motivation. Students do not feel compelled to read, especially in the classroom. This research works on testing ways to boost the motivation in the area of reading by students. This research aims at looking at updating both choices in terms of what we teach students, as well as how we teach them. This research aims to increase student motivation in reading and participation. Through the use of testing different incentives, different prompts, and different methods of text selection, this research aims at creating students who can build literacy skills on their own terms. It especially focuses on students who are low literacy as it stands, increasing their input in the classroom, and ensuring they both see themselves in the content as well as have the ability to interact with text in meaningful ways

    Using Sensitivity and Specificity to Analyze Testing Procedures

    This presentation summarizes an investigation into series of tests that indicate whether a subject is positive or negative for some condition. The research explores facts related to the sensitivity and specificity of tests, using this information in conjunction with Bayes’ Theorem to determine the probability of a subject being truly positive given any combination of test results. This is used to assess the effectiveness of certain testing procedures and find the relationship between positive and negative tests that is required to reach a particular threshold of certainty that a subject is truly its diagnosed condition

    Digital technology is constantly growing in our society, workplaces and school environments, and the way we use and interact with these digital tools has the potential to affect us mentally, morally and emotionally. This effect of mental malleability acted as the inspiration for the special topics research of digital tools and social media sites on the performance of students’ academic achievement. The subject matter of presented material touches on the discussion of digital addiction and the effects of Social Networking Sites (SNSs), as well as the observation of students\u27 weekly mental state and their academic performances based on controlled exposure times to social networks. Through weekly check-ins, academic evaluations, surveys, controlled exposure times and third party observations, the researcher will begin the initial steps of determining a correlation between digital technology and the academic performances of students

    The Effectiveness of Co-Taught Geometry Classes

    Ever-changing graduation requirements, along with other legislation involving students with disabilities, many schools have started implementing and pushing for more cotaught math classes if they have the means to do so. Certain schools have begun researching and experimenting with different types of co-teaching pairs and models for specific subject areas, including math. This research examines which type or types of students benefit the most from co-teaching in the geometry classroom setting, but also if schools are most effectively utilizing their teachers to receive the most success on the Geometry EOC AIR Assessment, by using Mixed models and Two-Way ANOVA techniques. The results of this study supported that a relationship exists between the specific type of class a student is in and their Geometry EOC AIR Assessment scores, even though students in solo-taught classes had a higher overall average. The study found that geometry air scores for a specific class type are dependent on the type of students that make up the class, and both variables must be factored in to accurately examine student scores. There was evidence found to support that geometry score averages are influenced by type of students or by the teacher the student had, however not enough evidence to support if geometry scores of the students amongst different teachers are dependent on the types of students they have in their classes

    Compassion Fatigue within the Nursing Profession: A Historical Issue impacted by Pandemic Stress

    The COVID-19 pandemic has been a major stressor on society, but the impact of COVID-19 on nurses has been much worse. Throughout the history of the profession compassion fatigue has been an ongoing issue, but with the pandemic the issue has become more noticeable. Many nurses are leaving the profession due to compassion fatigue and burnout. If action is not taken, the existing nursing shortage will become unmanageable. Acknowledging the signs and symptoms of compassion fatigue, as well as learning about appropriate interventions are useful tools in reducing the incidence of compassion fatigue. The field of nursing is an always changing discipline. The reduction of compassion fatigue for nurses will play a huge role in the future of the profession. The goal of this presentation is to analyze research conducted focused on compassion fatigue within the profession, how the incidence was impacted by COVID-19, and how the profession can recover

    Using CRISPR-Cas9 Techniques to Investigate Chick Limb Development

    CRISPR-Cas9 is used to investigate gene(s) underlying the limbless (ll) chick mutant phenotype. Guide RNA (gRNA) is used to bind to a specific DNA target sequence and the Cas9 enzyme facilitating specific cutting of DNA leading to decreased gene expression. The ll mutation has been mapped to an ~2.6 Mb region of chromosome 2. Genes in the targeted region suspected to have a role in limb development include: SP8 (expressed in limb ectoderm), Twist1 (promotes bone health and proliferation/lifespan of mesenchymal cells), and NUPL2 (regulates blood vessel development, smooth muscle contraction and hypoxia-related signaling pathways.) Target sequences for gRNAs will be identified using an online tool and synthesized commercially. Double stranded oligos will be ligated into the U6.3\u3egRNA.f+e plasmid and then co-electroporated with the pCAGG\u3enls-hCas9-nls-GFP plasmid into HH14 chick forelimb fields. Embryos will be incubated for 24-48 hours to examine limb development compared to the controls

    Is Explicit Instruction an Effective Method of Instruction in the Content Areas?

    The research problem and objectives in this research project focus on being an effective teacher and looking at the instructional strategies that make for an effective learning experience. The following question is what this research attempts to answer, “Is explicit instruction an effective method of instruction in the Content Areas?” The method of the study will be to determine, through ELA writing assignments, if the impact and effectiveness of explicit instruction on student learning is more effective than the same lessons using a more traditional and implicit method of teaching the same content. This paper will define, implement, and analyze teacher-directed explicit instruction in an English Language Arts lesson. The study will compare data derived from two lessons. One lesson will use traditional and implicit instructional strategies while the second lesson will be taught using explicit instructional strategies. The argument is that student success and quality of learning will increase through the use of explicit instruction. Qualitative data will be collected based on the students’ work/assessments from the lessons and a student survey. Based on the research, data collected, and the results of the assessments and surveys, we will determine if explicit instruction is an effective mode of instruction leading to greater student achievement in the content areas

    A field survey of fungal fruiting body species in Southern Ohio

    The aim of this survey was to observe and document the diversity and distribution of fungal species in Shawnee State Forest, in Southern Ohio. The abundance and distribution of fungal species, as evident by persistent and ephemeral fruiting bodies during winter and early spring will be examined in relation to environmental growth factors using Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Understanding factors that affect the distribution and abundance of these fungal species may be important for predicting the ecological dynamics of their symbiotic relationship with other plants. A series of linear transects were established in various sites of Shawnee State Forest which accounted for varied slopes, aspects, and elevations. Transects are ~122m long and allow for a continuous belt survey ~6m wide. All observations of fungal fruiting bodies found growing within those parameters have been documented along ecological data, including: tree species, tree condition and size, sunlight intensity, geographic location, aspect, and elevation. At time of submission, nearly thirty species of fungi have been documented and confirmed on the scientific platform iNaturalist using photos that have been certified as research grade. Preliminary trends have noted differences in aspect and common fungi-tree associations
