Institutional investors capitalizing football: An examination of the motives, impact, and strategies of a new class of investors in football
This dissertation comprises four manuscripts on professional football club ownership with a dedicated focus on institutional investors. The work examines the motives, impact, and strategies of this investor class, which is cur-rently gaining importance. The first chapter provides an introduction to the research topic, demonstrates the need for these studies, and briefly summarizes the results and contribution of each manuscript and the dissertation in its entirety. The second chapter consists of manuscript A, which provides a systematic and comprehensive overview of the relevant academic research in the field of investors in professional football, while the third chapter presents manuscript B, which focuses on the empirical, statistical impact of institutional ownership on the financial and sporting performance of football clubs. The subsequent two chapters contain the manuscripts C and D, which focus on the business models and strategies of different types of institutional investors. Manuscript C analyzes financially driven investors, and manuscript D assesses Middle East state funds using the example of the Qatar Investment Authority acquiring Paris St. Germain
Essays on private equity-backed buy-and-build strategies and initial public offerings
This cumulative dissertation presents three essays and adds to existing research on private equity (PE) investment outcomes and PE-backed initial public offerings (IPOs). The first essay looks at the effectiveness of PE-backed Buy-and-Build (B&B) strategies, revealing that PE firms pay notable premiums for B&B platforms. Despite these premiums, PE firms achieve higher than average equity returns through B&B strategies. The second essay explores the intended use of proceeds in PE-backed IPOs, showing that PE-backed IPOs are more inclined to use proceeds for repaying debt and selling shareholders, and less for mergers and acquisitions compared to non-PE-backed IPOs. PE-backed issuers with the intended use of proceeds of repaying debt have high ex-ante leverage ratios and revert to more normal leverage ratios post IPO. PE-backing affects underpricing through certification, most pronounced when information asymmetries are high. The third essay evaluates the influence of PE-backing on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) aspects in portfolio companies. It shows that PE-backed IPOs have lower ESG disclosure scores during the IPO year, yet similar ESG performance scores. PE-backed IPOs achieve higher scores in ESG performance post-IPO, suggesting long-term investor commitment is needed to enhance ESG aspects
