Improving Students’ Mental Model of Newton’s Third Law: Local Wisdom, Modeling Cycle, and Problem-Based Learning

    Get PDF
Students need a proper mental model to advance mastery of physics and understand the application of the concept of science. Therefore, it is necessary to research how to improve students' mental models based on Newton's third law, which integrates modeling cycles into problem-based learning. As an anchor of learning, the students were asked to explain action and reaction forces and their effects on Borneo’s local wisdom, balogo, and jukung barenteng. The research method used was quasi-experimental with a pretest-posttest control group design. The samples included 87 students of the 10th class in SMAN 1 Kelua and MAN 2 Tabalong. The essay test obtained students' mental models and was analyzed using N-Gain and a one-way ANOVA. The data analysis showed that every class has an average gain, and the p-value for the post-test score is less than 0.05. This means significant differences exist between students' post-test scores in the experimental class and students' post-test scores in the control class. It is indicated that problem-based learning with the modeling cycle and problems of balogo and jukung barenteng improves students' mental model of Newton's Third Law. Integrating local cultural elements such as balogo and jukung barenteng fosters deeper conceptual comprehension and offers an effective method for contextualizing abstract physics concepts through real-world examples. These learning strategies could be applied to other physics topics to improve students’ mental models and learning engagement

    Get PDF
This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of physics-based learning based on smartphone-integrated Group Investigation (GI) as a mobile mini-labs to improve students' science process skills in learning physics. This study is a quasi-experimental research with a post-test control group design. The research sample consisted of 72 students in class XI of Science at SMAN 10 Jambi City which was divided into an experimental class (n=36) and a control class (n=36). Data were collected using science process skills observation sheets and a learning implementation checklist. The results of the analysis using the Mann-Whitney U test showed a significant difference in science process skills between the two groups (p<0.05), with a high effect size value (r=0.86). Experimental classes showed higher improvements in all dimensions of science process skills, especially in communication, data collection and processing, and experiment design. Observation of learning implementation showed effective implementation with an average implementation score of 3.75 out of a maximum score of 4. These findings indicate that smartphone-integrated GI-based physics learning as mobile mini-labs is effective in improving students' science process skills, and provides important implications for the development of innovative physics-based learning strategies based on technology

Development of the Physics Knowledge Enrichment Book “Lightning” to Improve High School Students’ Science Literacy and Environmental Literacy

    Get PDF
The independent curriculum emphasizes literacy skills as the most important learning objectives. The two literacies that are greatly needed in the 21st century are science literacy and environmental literacy. However, these two literacies among high school students in Indonesia are still relatively low. The subject that is able to achieve both literacies in an integrated manner is physics. The purpose of this development research is to produce a physics knowledge enrichment book "lightning" to improve science literacy and environmental literacy of high school students that is valid and practical. This type of research is research and development (R&D) with the ADDIE model. The subjects of the study were physics teachers and grade XI high school students. Data were collected through questionnaires. Data analysis techniques include calculating the average score and Aiken validity index. The results of the study showed that: 1) The enrichment book was stated in the valid category in terms of material, language, presentation, and graphics; 2) The enrichment book by teachers and students was stated in the practical category in terms of ease of use, learning effectiveness, and benefits. Therefore, the physics knowledge enrichment book "lightning" that was developed is valid and practical as a solution to improve science literacy and environmental literacy of high school students

Analysis of Multiple-Choice Items in Physical Education Subject: A Systematic Literature Review

    Get PDF
This systematic literature review aims to analyze the characteristics and quality of multiple-choice items used in assessments within the field of Physical Education, Sports, and Health. The study seeks to identify common trends, strengths, and weaknesses in the formulation and effectiveness of multiple-choice questions in evaluating students' knowledge and understanding of Physical Education, Sports, and Health concepts. A systematic literature review approach was employed, focusing on peer-reviewed journal articles and academic sources published within the last decade. Studies were selected based on their relevance to multiple-choice question analysis in Physical Education, Sports, and Health assessments. The review examined aspects such as question validity, reliability, alignment with learning objectives, and cognitive level distribution. The analysis revealed several key findings regarding multiple-choice question construction in Physical Education, Sports, and Health assessments. Common issues include ambiguity in question wording, misalignment with curriculum objectives, and inadequate assessment of higher-order thinking skills. However, well-constructed multiple-choice questions were found to align effectively with learning goals, incorporate well-designed answer choices, and assess both lower-order and higher-order cognitive skills. The findings indicate that while multiple-choice questions remain a dominant assessment method in Physical Education, Sports, and Health, improvements are necessary to enhance their effectiveness. Recommendations include adopting standardized guidelines for question development, providing training for educators on multiple-choice question construction, and exploring alternative assessment formats to better evaluate students' comprehensive understanding of Physical Education, Sports, and Health concepts

The Effect of Modified and Unmodified Exercises on Motor Ability on Passing Ability of the Junior High School Volleyball Team Negeri 23 Kerinci

Overhead passing is a fundamental skill in volleyball that significantly influences game performance. Modified ball training is often used to enhance players' motor skills, but its effectiveness compared to non-modified training remains underexplored. This study aims to analyze the effect of modified and non-modified training on motor skills and its impact on overhead passing ability in the volleyball team of SMP Negeri 23 Kerinci. The study employs a quantitative experimental design with 16 volleyball players divided into two groups: modified ball training and non-modified training. Normality was tested using the Shapiro-Wilk test, and since the data were not normally distributed, the Mann-Whitney test and multiple linear regression were used for statistical analysis. The results indicate that modified ball training significantly improves overhead passing ability compared to non-modified training (p = 0.014). Players with higher motor skills showed greater improvement than those with lower motor skills. Regression analysis revealed that motor skills positively influence overhead passing (β = 0.506, p = 0.009), while modified training has a negative but significant effect (β = -0.564, p = 0.005), suggesting its effectiveness for players with higher motor skills. Coaches are encouraged to implement modified training to enhance volleyball players' technical skills
