Applications of an Interpersonal Communication Model to Educational Environments
No full textAbstract: The Composite Interaction Model of interpersonal communication is applied to professional practice using inductive and deductive strategies (1) to develop students' understanding of communication and the relationships of theory to practice and (2) to analyze the effectiveness of a voice care communication course for teachers. The first application encourages students to articulate basic components of communication by drawing upon personal experience while at the same time the instructor guides students toward a conceptual framework based upon the model. The second application demonstrates how the model is a useful tool to retrospectively assess the effectiveness of an in-service course for professional teachers. Résumé: Le modèle d'interaction composé ("Composite Interaction Model") porte sur la communication interpersonnelle, et s'applique bien à la pratique professionnelle. Grâce à ce modèle, on peut utiliser des stratégies déductives et inductives 1) pour aider les étudiants à mieux comprendre la communication et les rapports entre théorie et pratique, et 2) pour analyser l'efficacité d'un cours de communication sur les soins de la voix pour enseignants. La première de ces deux applications encourage les étudiants à se rapporter à leurs expériences personnelles pour explorer les composantes de base de la communication, tout en les guidant vers une approche générale inspirée de ce modèle. La seconde application démontre comment le modèle peut servir à évaluer l'efficacité de cours pour enseignants professionnels
Providing Links Among Government, Academia, and Industry: The Role of CISTI in Scholarly Communication

Canada's success as a modern, knowledge-based
economy depends on a strong national information infrastructure
that is responsive to the needs of the country's innovation system
for industrial development. The
Canada Institute for Scientific and Technical Information (CISTI)
at the National Research Council (NRC) is uniquely positioned
to meet the needs of Canadian researchers and contribute to the
Canadian innovation system by providing Canadian access to worldwide
scholarly scientific, technical, and medical (STM) information and by leading
in the development of the national information infrastructure
linking Canadian industry, academia, and government. The emerging
world of electronic information is transforming scholarly communication
and changing the roles of researchers, users, publishers, and
librarians. Increased collaboration will be critical to maintaining
a robust national information infrastructure.

Le succès d'une économie canadienne
axée sur le savoir dépend d'une solide infrastructure d'information
nationale pouvant satisfaire aux besoins de développement
industriel éprouvés dans le système d'innovation du
pays. L'Institut canadien de l'information scientifique et technique
(ICIST) est en position idéale pour répondre aux besoins
des chercheurs canadiens et pour contribuer au système d'innovation
national en donnant accès pour les Canadiens à l'information
scientifique, technique, et médicale du monde entier et en
orchestrant le développement d'une infrastructure nationale
d'information qui relierait entre eux l'industrie, l'université,
et le gouvernement. Le monde de l'information électronique
en émergence est en train de transformer la communication
savante ainsi que le rôle de chercheurs, usagers, éditeurs,
et bibliothécaires. Une collaboration accrue entre ceux-ci
sera essentielle pour maintenir une infrastructure d'information
nationale robuste
Promoting Electronic Scholarly Publishing in Canada: Initiatives at Industry Canada

As part of its internationally acclaimed SchoolNet
project, Industry Canada is supporting major initiatives in the
area of electronic scholarly publishing. This paper provides
a brief introduction to Industry Canada's activities related
to universities, academics, and students, and describes SchoolNet's
efforts to promote electronic publishing of scholarly information
in Canada.

The National Library's Role in Facilitating Scholarly Communications

This paper reviews the role the National Library
of Canada plays in supporting effective and efficient access
both to current research findings and the scholarly archive of
Canadian publications. The impact of electronic dissemination
of scholarly information is examined in the context of collections
development, services to scholars and researchers, and co-operative
initiatives. The paper focuses on emerging issues surrounding
electronic publications relating to legal deposit, preservation,
standards for encoding, proprietary rights to information, and
research services. It also explores the potential for enhancements
to the National Library's Canadian Theses Program in the context
of an electronic environment.

Cet article examine le rôle que joue
la Bibliothèque nationale du Canada à assurer un accès
rapide et efficace aux résultats de recherche courants et
aux archives de publications savantes canadiennes. Il examine
en outre l'impact de la dissémination électronique de l'information
savante sur le développement des collections, les services
offerts aux savants et aux chercheurs, et les initiatives coopératives.
L'article met l'accent sur les questions émergentes portant
sur les publications électroniques, y compris le dépôt
légal, la conservation, les normes de codage, les droits de
propriété à l'information, et les services de recherche.
