Intelligent in-vehicle safety and security monitoring system
Dangerous situations such as children are left in vehicles, are dropped off at wrong stops, or take on wrong school buses usually caused by the negligence of drivers. This paper presents a real-time intelligent in-vehicle monitoring system that can count and recognize people as well as alert drivers if such improprieties or potential dangers happen. The system uses an HOG-based face detector from the Dlib library to obtain face counting function. Face recognition is achieved through two steps, facial feature extraction, and face identification. The ResNet is used in facial feature extraction. It transforms an aligned face into a 256-dimensional vector, a Euclidean facial embedding. In face identification, labeled faces will be transformed into facial embeddings first. Then k-nearest neighbor classifier (kNN) is adopted to identify people using such facial embeddings. The simulation on ChokePoint dataset is tested and the average accuracy is 93 percent. The distance sensor performs well when it is installed 100 cm in front of people. Whether the motion sensor is installed depends on special conditions

Heart Rate Reactivity In Stressed and Sleep Deprived Individuals
Acute sleep deprivation and acute stress lead to similar changes in physiological and cognitive functioning. However, very little research has investigated the combined effects of acute sleep deprivation and acute stress on heart rate reactivity. The first aim of the current study was to compare delta heart rate in acutely sleep deprived and non-sleep deprived participants during an acute psychosocial stressor. It was hypothesized that sleep deprived participants would exhibit lower delta heart rate than well-rested participants. The second aim was to examine heart rate recovery after exposure to an acute stressor. It was hypothesized that sleep deprived individuals would experience delays in heart rate recovery immediately after the stressor. Lastly, an exploratory analysis was run to explore the relationship between cortisol and heart rate reactivity in sleep deprived and non-sleep deprived conditions. A sample of 15 healthy adults was included in the analyses. The participants either spent a night of total sleep deprivation (N=9) or a night of well-rested sleep (N=6). Beats-per-minute recordings were taken before the acute stressor (pre-stress), during the acute stressor (stress), and immediately after the acute stressor (post-stress). Saliva samples were collected at the end of the pre-stress, stress, and post-stress time points. A significant difference was observed in estimated BPM variance between conditions, with sleep deprived individuals having less variability in their heart beats in comparison to non-sleep deprived individuals. There were no significant differences in delta heart rate or heart rate recovery between conditions. Moreover, exploratory analyses did not reveal a significant relationship between cortisol and estimated BPM. Taken together, the results of the present study suggest that acute sleep deprivation lowers estimated BPM variance. Future research should be conducted to better understand the extent to which acute psychosocial stress impacts physiological stress responses, namely heart rate reactivity and variance, in acutely sleep deprived individuals

Do wraparound services mediate academic achievement for "at risk” Latinx youth?
Maslow's hierarchy of needs theory provides the framework to examining the academic outcomes of at-risk students at a Latinx-serving Title 1 charter school in Houston, Texas which models itself as a Full Service Community School (FSCS). In this nonexperimental study, quantitative data was collected from student records and reports at the charter school and consolidated into a comprehensive database by a team of graduate and undergraduate students from the University of Houston Clear Lake (UHCL), under the supervision of the principal investigator, Dr. Desdamona Rios. Chi square and regression analyses were run to test six measures of academic achievement, including grade point averages (GPA) and performances on standardized tests, so as to assess the impact wraparound services have on mediating risk factors for students at this school. Findings indicate that gender, at-risk status, being an English Language Learner (ELL), and participating in In-School Programs (ISP) most significantly predicted academic outcomes on these measures. This study contributes to the growing literature on FSCSs and concludes that the role these schools have in providing vital resources to at-risk students, who are often lacking certain basic needs, is critical to their success in their academics

The Impact of Sleep Deprivation and Stress Reactivity on Interleukin-6
Interleukin-6 (IL-6) has been implicated as a biomarker for both stress and sleep deprivation. Gaining a clearer understanding of the impact of both conditions concurrently may provide a better understanding of the biological basis of both sleep and stress. We developed an experiment that combined sleep deprivation and the Trier Social Stress Test in order to see how the two conditions interact. We found no significant impact of stress and sleep deprivation on IL-6 levels. Our findings indicate that more research must be conducted in order to fully test this relationship
