    The Relationship of Parental Involvement and Latino Students Academic Achievement, Absenteeism, and Behavior

    The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between Hispanic parental involvement and Hispanic students’ academic achievement, absenteeism, and behavior. Fifth grade parents from four elementary schools in a large urban school district in southeast Texas were solicited to complete the PASS survey. Upon completion of the survey, student standardized test scores for fifth grade 2018 State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness, behavior records, and average daily attendance percentages were collected from archived campus and district data. The data was analyzed using Pearson correlations to determine whether a statistically significant relationship exists between parental involvement and fifth grade academic achievement, behavior, and attendance. Campus administrators were also invited to participate in semi-structured interviews. Findings indicated that a relationship exists between parental involvement and student behavior. However, no relationship was found to exist between parental involvement and student academic achievement or student attendance. Results also showed that administrator perceptions in parental involvement did influence the parental involvement programs held on campuses

    Flood Risk and Mitigation Analysis of the Brays Bayou

    Flooding has been a problem of Houston since it was established in 1837. However, over the past 60 years Houston has gone from a city of about a 900,000 people in 1960, to over four million today. This dramatic increase in population has greatly changed the landscape of Houston. The city has been and continues to expand outwards in all directions. The Brays Bayou Watershed is currently home to over 700,000 people in Houston. This study will examine the implications due to the recent updated annual exceedance probability (AEP) values on the Brays Bayou watershed. ESRI ArcGIS has been utilized to conduct a hydrological analysis of the watershed. A new model of HEC-HMS has been built using 2018 Lidar data to study the hydrology of the rainfall-runoff in the watershed. A new model of HEC-RAS has been built to analyze the changes the new AEP values on the depth and extent of flooding. The results from HEC-HMS show that the median AEP values will cause the discharge to rise by 29% for the 100-Year 24-Hour event and 33% for the 500 year 24-rainfall event at the outlet. The model showed that the peak discharges from Hurricane Harvey could have been reduced by at least 3.5% and volume reduction of 15% with the addition on the proposed detention ponds. The analysis for the 2040 projections shows that the peak discharge could increase in the range from 3.4% to 5.1% depending on the rainfall event. The HEC-RAS model shows three areas of increased water depth at the stream. The three areas coincided with areas of significant elevation change, and adjacent to highways crossing the streams. The lack of space left in the watershed will cause many challenges on the mitigation projects in the future

    The Relationship Between the Use of Metacognitive Reading Strategies and Student Retention in Higher Education

    Student retention is a major issue that has spanned multiple decades in higher education in the United States, corresponding with greater access to higher education and a rise in non-traditional students. Innumerable challenges can interfere with a student’s academic performance or ability to remain in and complete a degree program. All manner of recruiting and retention programs exist across the U.S. aimed at supporting at-risk students, promoting positive study habits and bridging knowledge gaps in content areas and higher education culture. However, such programs are not typically designed to develop critical thinking and self-regulation, particularly in academic reading. Reading university-level texts while employing higher-order thinking skills and self-regulation, known as metacognition, is a crucial academic skill lacking in most undergraduate university students. It is possible that institutions of higher education could strengthen student retention by integrating metacognitive reading strategy instruction into the curriculum and/or support programming. This mixed methods explanatory study examines the possible relationship between the level of student use of metacognitive reading strategies and their retention, and is framed on a triad of theories: Tinto’s Student Integration Model of retention, Flavell’s Model of Cognitive Monitoring and Heider’s Attribution Theory
