S. variegatum bevorzugt niedrigere Lagen (200-800 m ü. M.) und S. maximum höhere Lagen (600-1000 m ü. M.) als S. monticola und S. sp. aff. monticola (400-800 m ü. M.).StichwörterSimulium variegatum group, occurrence, Central Europe. This paper describes the occurrence of Simulium argyreatum Meigen, 1838, Simulium maximum (Knoz, 1961), Simulium monticola Friederichs, 1920, Simulium variegatum Meigen, 1818 and the not described taxon S. sp. aff. monticola in general, and more detailed in the territory of Slovakia. S. variegatum, S. argyreatum und S. monticola have large areas differing in some details (e.g. occurrence in the British Islands, Skandinavien, Northafrica). S. maximum is restricted to the higher mountains in Central and Southern Europe; S. sp. aff. monticola is known only from Slovakia till now. S. variegatum and S. argyreatum are common in Slovakia; the formerly published wide occurrence of S. monticola has not been confirmed. Revised data shows, that S. maximum is more common, than suspected. S. argyreatum is widely distributed through all altitudes. S. variegatum prefers lower (200-800 m a.s.l.) and S. maximum higher altitudes (600-1000 m a.s.l.) than S. monticola and S. sp. aff. monticola (400-800 m a.s.l.).KeywordsSimulium variegatum group, occurrence, Central Europe
Stichwörtermountain cicada, Cicadetta montana, Cicadetta brevipennis, Cicadetta cerdaniensis, Cicadetta macedonica, Cicadetta podolica, acoustics, calling song.According to recent bioacoustic investigations, the mountain singing cicada Cicadetta montana (Scopoli, 1772) is a complex of morphologically very similar species. The calling song of C. montana is a continuous, long and slowly increasing sound, which rapidly decays after about 1 minute (Fig. 2). The calling song of C. brevipennis is a sequence of much shorter "binary" phrases, composed of one long and one short echeme (Fig. 3). Units of the C. cerdaniensis calling song are much shorter and each ends without an interruption with a loud impulse (Fig. 4). This species has much wider distribution as previously assumed. The calling song phrases of the C. macedonica comprise series of short echemes ending with a longer echeme (Fig. 5). Morphologically distinct but close related C. podolica has calling song phrases with a similar structure, but the repetition rate of short echemes is slightly different and the long echeme at the end is substantially longer (Fig. 6). Geographic distribution of all these species in (Central) Europe has to be determined with the aid of bioacoustic methods anew.Keywordsmountain cicada, Cicadetta montana, Cicadetta brevipennis, Cicadetta cerdaniensis, Cicadetta macedonica, Cicadetta podolica, acoustics, calling song

StichwörterBio-information crisis, taxonomy, impediments, perspectives.Taxonomy provides basic information about the diversity of life, and a universal language that unambiguously vehicles such information. Nevertheless, a demise of taxonomy is widespread in many European countries and results in a bio-information crisis. Based on experience with Palaearctic Coleoptera and a large number of coleopterists, the taxonomic impediment is seen as a consequence of a number of factors. Among them, the underestimation of the variability of species, the believe in new technologies that are assumed to provide more relevant data than complex knowledge, the inadequate means of evaluation of work in taxonomy, the confusion of taxonomy with its means of identification, and the expectation of finality in taxonomic research appear to have a particularly negative impact. New methods proposed as salvage for taxonomy are discussed. They appear either ill-based, or may punctually approve deficits, but luck potential to reverse the present situation. It is suggested that true progress requires adequate support, and a priori free re-evaluation of taxonomy (and biosystematics) in universities as in museums. Should the present tendencies in many European countries last, the professional taxonomy and associated knowledge will have to be imported, or may vanish.KeywordsBio-information crisis, taxonomy, impediments, perspectives
Industrial emissions and pesticides impact on agrobiocenosis biodiversity.
Stichwörterindustrial emissions, pesticides impact, agricultural landscapes, biodiversity. This contribution presents the results of a long-term study (1987-2004) on the influence of industrial emissions and pesticides on the surface-dwelling arthropod populations of agricultural fields with crops of cereals, potato, sunflower, cabbage and sugarbeet. Particular attention was given to the insects. The agricultural areas exposed to pollutants were compared with control areas not exposed to the chosen influencing factors. The structure of communities of arthropods in biocenoses affected by pesticides and industrial emissions was strongly affected by the toxic pollutants. The influence on the biodiversity of agro-ecosystems is reflected in the quantative and qualitative structure of the collected samples, by a reduction in the number of species and individuals, differences in the species composition and in the composition of trophic groups as well as by differences in population dynamics. Not only was the number of species and individuals of arthropods on plots exposed to industrial emissions and pesticides consistently reduced, but also the number of higher taxonomic categories (classes, orders, families, genera). Predators were numerically dominant on the control areas, phytophages in the affected plots. The quantative relationship between primary and secondary consumers is a good indicator for the estimation of agro-biodiversity. Aranea and Coleoptera showed a certain resistance to the negative effects of toxic substances, which could be shown by their abundance and frequency of appearance. The structural and functional alterations to arthropod communities as a result of exposure to industrial emissions and pesticides are equally applicable to other taxonomic and trophic categories. They are therefore suitable as indicators for the reduction in biodiversity at the level of complete biocenoses. Reductions in biodiversity have in turn an influence on the productivity and the stability of a biocenosis in both space and time.Keywordsindustrial emissions, pesticides impact, agricultural landscapes, biodiversity
For several years, scenes from the life of various insects have been put on stage under the stereomicroscope and captured with fast, high resolution video technology. As a result, for example, the development of the cereal aphid Sitobion avenae or the lacewing Chrysoperla carnea can be viewed from the birth respectively from the egg to the adult organism. Several sequences are spectacular and have never previously been documented in motion pictures, as for example the attack by the chalcidoid wasp Aphelinus abdominalis on its aphid host or the mechanism of honeydew excretion by phloem suckers.KeywordsVideofilm, Biology, Behaviour, Insecta
StichwörterHymenoptera, Evanioidea, Gasteruptionidae, new species, Gasteruption, Hylaeus, Phragmites, Lipara galls.Nomenklatorische Handlungenphragmiticola Saure, 2006 (Gasteruption), spec. n.Gasteruption phragmiticola sp. n. is described from Germany as a new species. The wasp looks rather like Gasteruption subtile (Thomson, 1883) but differs in some important characteristics, e. g. in surface structure of mesonotum. Gasteruption phragmiticola inhabits reeds and obviously develops in nests of the masked bee Hylaeus pectoralis Förster, 1871 (Apidae, Colletinae).
