StichwörterBritish Isles, Cephidae, Pamphiliidae, Tenthredinoidea, hosts, phenology, distribution. Results of fieldwork are presented from the 14th International Sawfly Workshop, held in the southern Highlands of Scotland, mostly in Perthshire. Some records of Symphyta from other parts of Scotland are included. First records in the British Isles are given for eight tenthredinid species: Amauronematus mimus, Phyllocolpa alienata, P. erythropyga, P. plicalapponum, P. plicaphylicifolia, P. prussica, Pristiphora thalictri and Tenthredo ignobilis. A. mimus is also recorded from Ireland. Amauronematus stenogaster is removed from the list of British Isles Symphyta. Recorded for the first time in Scotland are one cephid (Hartigia xanthostoma) and ten tenthredinids (Claremontia uncta, Dolerus brevicornis, Empria basalis, Empria parvula, Parna apicalis, Pristiphora decipiens, Pristiphora leucopus, Pristiphora testacea, Tenthredo mandibularis and Tenthredopsis ornata). Characters useful for the distinction of some species are illustrated. The type locality of Nematus herbaceae Cameron, 1876 is clarified. Geranium pratense is confirmed as a host of Macrophya albipuncta. Salix reticulata is a host of Amauronematus mcluckieae [mandatory correction of spelling of species name]. Sedum rosea may be a host of Tenthredo ignobilis. General conclusions: high species richness of Perthshire sawfly fauna compared to other regions of Scotland, including several species only known in British Isles from there; importance to conservation of rock-ledge habitats; large data deficits for many species, particularly on hosts, phenology and distribution; high value of Malaise traps in faunal survey of Symphyta, because spectrum of taxa captured differs from that recorded by hand-netting; as indicated by species and sex composition of ‘fall-out’ on snow patches, adult sawflies undertake active dispersal, within landmasses, to a greater extent than is often assumed.KeywordsBritish Isles, Cephidae, Pamphiliidae, Tenthredinoidea, hosts, phenology, distribution

(Taiwan), N. barbatulus sp. n. (Thailand, Myanmar, China), N. barbatus sp. n. (Thailand), N. bicarinatus sp. n. (Vietnam), N. bifidus sp. n. (Taiwan), N. carinatus sp. n. (Taiwan), N. configens sp. n. (Taiwan), N. dupleseriatus sp. n. (N-Indien), N. erubescens sp. n. (Borneo), N. glaber sp. n. (S-China, Hongkong, Thailand, Malaysia), N. hlavaci sp. n. (China: Fujian, Jiangxi), N. inarmatus sp. n. (Taiwan), N. incisus sp. n. (China: Guangxi), N. praeacutus sp. n. (China: Yunnan), N. rimatus sp. n. (China: Guangxi), N. rougemonti sp. n. (Thailand), N. schillhammeri sp. n. (Myanmar), N. schuelkei sp. n. (China: Yunnan), N. smetanai sp. n. (Taiwan). (ex Lobochilus), and "Medon" labralis (Cameron, 1943), comb. n. StichwörterColeoptera, Staphylinidae, Paederinae, Medonina, Neosclerus, Sunius, Palaearctic region, Oriental region, taxonomy, new species, new synonymies, new combinations, replacement name, lectotype designations, key to species, additional records.Nomenklatorische Handlungenbrevipennis Coiffait, 1978 (Lobochilus), primary homonym of Neosclerus brevipennis (Cameron, 1943)houlberti Coiffait, 1987 (Lobochilus), replacement name, syn. nov. of Neosclerus brevipennis (Cameron, 1943)labralis (Cameron, 1943) (Medon), comb. nov. hitherto Lobochilus labralis Cameron, 1943armatus Assing, 2011 (Neosclerus), spec. nov.assamensis (Cameron, 1931) (Neosclerus), LT; comb. nov. hitherto Lobochilus assamensis Cameron, 1931barbatulus Assing, 2011 (Neosclerus), spec. nov.barbatus Assing, 2011 (Neosclerus), spec. nov.bicarinatus Assing, 2011 (Neosclerus), spec. nov.bifidus Assing, 2011 (Neosclerus), spec. nov.carinatus Assing, 2011 (Neosclerus), spec. nov.configens Assing, 2011 (Neosclerus), spec. nov.dupleseriatus Assing, 2011 (Neosclerus), spec. nov.erubescens Assing, 2011 (Neosclerus), spec. nov.fortepunctatus Cameron, 1924 (Neosclerus), LTfrater Cameron, 1924 (Neosclerus), LT; syn. nov. of Neosclerus granulicollis Cameron, 1924glaber Assing, 2011 (Neosclerus), spec. nov.granulicollis Cameron, 1924 (Neosclerus), LThlavaci Assing, 2011 (Neosclerus), spec. nov.inarmatus Assing, 2011 (Neosclerus), spec. nov.incisus Assing, 2011 (Neosclerus), spec. nov.javanus (Bernhauer, 1920) (Neosclerus), comb. nov. hitherto Lobochilus javanus Bernhauer, 1920nigerrimus (Kraatz, 1859) (Neosclerus), LT; comb. nov. hitherto Lithocharis nigerrima Kraatz, 1859praeacutus Assing, 2011 (Neosclerus), spec. nov.rimatus Assing, 2011 (Neosclerus), spec. nov.rougemonti Assing, 2011 (Neosclerus), spec. nov.schillhammeri Assing, 2011 (Neosclerus), spec. nov.schuelkei Assing, 2011 (Neosclerus), spec. nov.smetanai Assing, 2011 (Neosclerus), spec. nov.cameroni Assing, 2011 (Sunius), nom. nov. for Lobochilus brachypterus Cameron, 1943Neosclerus Cameron, 1924 is closely related to Sunius Stephens, 1829 of the Medonina and is distributed in the Oriental and southern East Palaearctic regions. The genus is redescribed; its intra- and intergeneric phylogenetic affiliations are discussed. The types of all previously described species and additional material are revised. Twenty-six species are recognized, (re-)described, and illustrated, 19 of them for the first time: Neosclerus armatus sp. n. (Taiwan), N. barbatulus sp. n. (Thailand, Myanmar, China), N. barbatus sp. n. (Thailand), N. bicarinatus sp. n. (Vietnam), N. bifidus sp. n. (Taiwan), N. carinatus sp. n. (Taiwan), N. configens sp. n. (Myanmar), N. schuelkei sp. n. (China: Yunnan), N. smetanai sp. n. (Taiwan). Several additional species are listed, but not described, since they are represented only by females. The secondary homonym Lobochilus brachypterus Cameron, 1943 is replaced with Sunius cameroni nom. n. Two synonymies are proposed: Neosclerus brevipennis (Cameron, 1943) = Lobochilus houlberti (Coiffait, 1987), syn. n.; N. granulicollis Cameron, 1924 = N. frater Cameron, 1924, syn. n. Four new combinations are established: Neosclerus assamensis (Cameron, 1931), comb. n. (ex Lobochilus), N. javanus (Bernhauer, 1920); comb. n. (ex Lobochilus), N. nigerrimus (Kraatz, 1859); comb. n. (ex Lobochilus), and "Medon" labralis (Cameron, 1943), comb. n. (ex Neosclerus). Lectotypes are designated for Neosclerus fortepunctatus Cameron, 1924, N. granulicollis Cameron, 1924, N. frater Cameron, 1924, Lobochilus assamensis Cameron, 1931, and Lithocharis nigerrima Kraatz, 1859. Data on the distribution and natural history of the Neosclerus species are compiled. Some of them are apparently active flyers and widespread. Micropterous species with low dispersal power and restricted distributions are known only from southern China and Taiwan, the regions with the highest species diversity. Neosclerus species apparently live in - usually moist - leaf litter and moss in forests, shrub habitats, and on banks of streams. A key to species and a catalogue are provided.KeywordsColeoptera, Staphylinidae, Paederinae, Medonina, Neosclerus, Sunius, Palaearctic region, Oriental region, taxonomy, new species, new synonymies, new combinations, replacement name, lectotype designations, key to species, additional records.Nomenclatural Actsbrevipennis Coiffait, 1978 (Lobochilus), primary homonym of Neosclerus brevipennis (Cameron, 1943)houlberti Coiffait, 1987 (Lobochilus), replacement name, syn. nov. of Neosclerus brevipennis (Cameron, 1943)labralis (Cameron, 1943) (Medon), comb. nov. hitherto Lobochilus labralis Cameron, 1943armatus Assing, 2011 (Neosclerus), spec. nov.assamensis (Cameron, 1931) (Neosclerus), LT; comb. nov. hitherto Lobochilus assamensis Cameron, 1931barbatulus Assing, 2011 (Neosclerus), spec. nov.barbatus Assing, 2011 (Neosclerus), spec. nov.bicarinatus Assing, 2011 (Neosclerus), spec. nov.bifidus Assing, 2011 (Neosclerus), spec. nov.carinatus Assing, 2011 (Neosclerus), spec. nov.configens Assing, 2011 (Neosclerus), spec. nov.dupleseriatus Assing, 2011 (Neosclerus), spec. nov.erubescens Assing, 2011 (Neosclerus), spec. nov.fortepunctatus Cameron, 1924 (Neosclerus), LTfrater Cameron, 1924 (Neosclerus), LT; syn. nov. of Neosclerus granulicollis Cameron, 1924glaber Assing, 2011 (Neosclerus), spec. nov.granulicollis Cameron, 1924 (Neosclerus), LThlavaci Assing, 2011 (Neosclerus), spec. nov.inarmatus Assing, 2011 (Neosclerus), spec. nov.incisus Assing, 2011 (Neosclerus), spec. nov.javanus (Bernhauer, 1920) (Neosclerus), comb. nov. hitherto Lobochilus javanus Bernhauer, 1920nigerrimus (Kraatz, 1859) (Neosclerus), LT; comb. nov. hitherto Lithocharis nigerrima Kraatz, 1859praeacutus Assing, 2011 (Neosclerus), spec. nov.rimatus Assing, 2011 (Neosclerus), spec. nov.rougemonti Assing, 2011 (Neosclerus), spec. nov.schillhammeri Assing, 2011 (Neosclerus), spec. nov.schuelkei Assing, 2011 (Neosclerus), spec. nov.smetanai Assing, 2011 (Neosclerus), spec. nov.cameroni Assing, 2011 (Sunius), nom. nov. for Lobochilus brachypterus Cameron, 194

Phylogeny and classification of the Sciaroidea (Diptera: Bibionomorpha): Where do we stand after Amorim & Rindal (2007)?

    Get PDF
A paper on the phylogeny of the Sciaroidea by D. Amorim and E. Rindal from 2007 is reviewed. The phylogenetic hypothesis derived from morphological quantitative analysis is used by these authors to propose a new classification of the Sciaroidea which differs significantly from previous classifications. In the present review it is shown by way of examples that the data matrix used by Amorim and Rindal is fatally flawed in terms of both the employed taxa and characters. As a result, the analysis is not repeatable and the hypothesis resulting from it is neither testable nor rebuttable. It is suggested that the paper in question should not be used as a basis for changes in the traditional classification of the Sciaroidea.KeywordsDiptera, Sciaroidea, phylogeny, family classification, review

StichwörterInsecta, Trichoptera, Rhyacophila Pictet, new species, taxonomy, phylogeny, historical biogeography, dispersal scenario, Borneo, the Philippines.Nomenklatorische Handlungenamoyanensis Mey, 2011 (Rhyacophila), spec.nov.baldensis Mey, 2011 (Rhyacophila), spec.nov.banahawmontis Mey, 2011 (Rhyacophila), spec.nov.cordilliera Mey, 2011 (Rhyacophila), spec.nov.pilifera Mey, 2011 (Rhyacophila), spec.nov.Nine species of the genus Rhyacophila occur on the Philippines. Five species are described as new: R. baldensis sp. n., R. banahawmontis sp. n., R. amoyanensis sp. n., R. pilifera sp. n., and R. cordilliera sp. n. The male genitalia and adults of four species are illustrated. The species belong to two species-groups, with the latter group established herein. The ranges of these groups in the Philippines are depicted in two maps. Phylogenetic relationships were analysed and are presented in three cladograms based on morphological characters of male genitalia. The species of the castanea-group immigrated into the Philippines via Borneo, whereas the species of the spinosellata-group are relict elements of an older Asian fauna. A dispersal scenario is proposed for both groups concerning the colonisation of the Philippines.KeywordsInsecta, Trichoptera, Rhyacophila Pictet, new species, taxonomy, phylogeny, historical biogeography, dispersal scenario, Borneo, the Philippines.Nomenclatural Actsamoyanensis Mey, 2011 (Rhyacophila), spec.nov.baldensis Mey, 2011 (Rhyacophila), spec.nov.banahawmontis Mey, 2011 (Rhyacophila), spec.nov.cordilliera Mey, 2011 (Rhyacophila), spec.nov.pilifera Mey, 2011 (Rhyacophila), spec.nov

(China: Sichuan); S. barbatus sp. n. (China: Yunnan); S. bistipulatus sp. n. (Südindien); S. excisus sp. n. (Malaysia); S. hastatus sp. n. (Nordpakistan, Nordindien); S. laoticus sp. n. (Laos); S. maculosus sp. n. (China: Yunnan); S. penicillatus sp. n. (Nepal); S. rectus sp. n. (Thailand); S. rougemonti sp. n. (Thailand); S. schuelkei sp. n. (China: Yunnan); S. sinuatus sp. n. (Thailand, Myanmar). Ein Name wird synonymisiert: Echiaster unicolor Bernhauer, 1922 = E. japonicus Bernhauer, 1923, syn. n.StichwörterColeoptera, Staphylinidae, Paederinae, Astenina, Sclerochiton, Echiaster, Palaearctic region, Oriental region, taxonomy, new species, new synonymy, key to species, catalogue, discontinuous distribution.Nomenklatorische Handlungenjaponicus Bernhauer, 1923 (Echiaster), syn.nov. of Echiaster japonicus unicolor Bernhauer, 1922acutissimus Assing, 2011 (Sclerochiton), spec.nov.barbatus Assing, 2011 (Sclerochiton), spec.nov.bistipulatus Assing, 2011 (Sclerochiton), spec.nov.excisus Assing, 2011 (Sclerochiton), spec.nov.hastatus Assing, 2011 (Sclerochiton), spec.nov.laoticus Assing, 2011 (Sclerochiton), spec.nov.maculosus Assing, 2011 (Sclerochiton), spec.nov.ochraceus Kraatz, 1859 (Sclerochiton), LT now syn. of Sclerochiton indicus Motschulsky, 1858penicillatus Assing, 2011 (Sclerochiton), spec.nov.rectus Assing, 2011 (Sclerochiton), spec.nov.rougemonti Assing, 2011 (Sclerochiton), spec.nov.schuelkei Assing, 2011 (Sclerochiton), spec.nov.sinuatus Assing, 2011 (Sclerochiton), spec.nov.Based on a revision of the available types and of additional material, fifteen species of Sclerochiton Kraatz, 1859 are recognized in the Oriental region and the adjacent south of the East Palaearctic. All the species are (re-)described and illustrated, twelve of them for the first time: S. acutissimus sp. n. (China: Sichuan); S. barbatus sp. n. (China: Yunnan); S. bistipulatus sp. n. (southern India); S. excisus sp. n. (Malaysia); S. hastatus sp. n. (northern Pakistan, northern India); S. laoticus sp. n. (Laos); S. maculosus sp. n. (China: Yunnan); S. penicillatus sp. n. (Nepal); S. rectus sp. n. (Thailand); S. rougemonti sp. n. (Thailand); S. schuelkei sp. n. (China: Yunnan); S. sinuatus sp. n. (Thailand, Myanmar). The genus is redescribed and attributed to the subtribe Astenina. It has a discontinuous distribution with six species in the Afrotropical region and fifteen species in the Oriental region and the adjacent south of the East Palaearctic. In the study region, the diversity is highest in China, India, and Thailand (five species each), and Nepal (three species). The species were collected from forest litter at low to intermediate altitudes (150-2400 m). Adult beetles have been found throughout the year. A key to species and a catalogue are provided. A new synonymy is proposed: Echiaster unicolor Bernhauer, 1922 = E. japonicus Bernhauer, 1923, syn. n.KeywordsColeoptera, Staphylinidae, Paederinae, Astenina, Sclerochiton, Echiaster, Palaearctic region, Oriental region, taxonomy, new species, new synonymy, key to species, catalogue, discontinuous distribution.Nomenclatural Actsjaponicus Bernhauer, 1923 (Echiaster), syn.nov. of Echiaster japonicus unicolor Bernhauer, 1922acutissimus Assing, 2011 (Sclerochiton), spec.nov.barbatus Assing, 2011 (Sclerochiton), spec.nov.bistipulatus Assing, 2011 (Sclerochiton), spec.nov.excisus Assing, 2011 (Sclerochiton), spec.nov.hastatus Assing, 2011 (Sclerochiton), spec.nov.laoticus Assing, 2011 (Sclerochiton), spec.nov.maculosus Assing, 2011 (Sclerochiton), spec.nov.ochraceus Kraatz, 1859 (Sclerochiton), LT now syn. of Sclerochiton indicus Motschulsky, 1858penicillatus Assing, 2011 (Sclerochiton), spec.nov.rectus Assing, 2011 (Sclerochiton), spec.nov.rougemonti Assing, 2011 (Sclerochiton), spec.nov.schuelkei Assing, 2011 (Sclerochiton), spec.nov.sinuatus Assing, 2011 (Sclerochiton), spec.nov
