Returned to Leicestershire and became interested in fungi and joined Leicestershire Fungi Study Group (LFSG) in 1979 when it was first formed, and later became chairman. After being made redundant he took an Open University (OU) course on microbiology and embraced natural history fully. Joined Market Bosworth Natural History Society (MBNHS) and the British Micrological Society (BMS). Describes how Leicestershire Museum Service assisted the LFSG and provided meeting rooms. Notes the presence of professionals in the group, including Tom Hering, gave the LFSG respectibility. Lists the achievements of the LFSG. Finishes the interview by detailing his favourite natural history books and fears for the erosion of the local environment

After a retrospective on his childhood and career, a description of where his interest in natural history began is traced from sites such as Eyebrook reservoir and New Walk Museum. Gives much information on local enthusiasts and experts, including taxidermist Ted Williams, Jack Otter, Hubert Barrow, Peter Gamble, the Felstead brothers, Cliff Holt, Eric Duffy, Mr Middleton (keeper at Bradgate Park), Eric Pochin, Alan Beck, Ron Hickling, Fred Littlemore and Arthur Todd. Recalls LROS started as Literature and Philospohical Ornithological Section and broke away. Describes how attitudes towards encouraging natural history have changed over the twentieth century. Mentions that he is also a member of the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO), Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), Norfolk Wildlife Trust (NWT) and Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust (LRWT). Details the activities of LROS, including that its membership is around 600-strong, and that digital technology has greatly assisted the society in communicating between members, and in allowing the public to access its work. Expresses that Redstarts have almost vanished from the county because of shooting. The speaker also chronicles numerous countries visitied abroad and speaks about environmental issues affecting natural habitats.
