    Michael Dally (MD) interviewed by Unknown (U), 27 July 2015. MD recalls earliest memories of Evington Park Road, moved to Leicester at three years old. Mentions family background, parents from Wales, father trained as a Wireman, initially worked in mines, later worked in fizzy drink factory on Linden Road. Mother worked for Manpower Board during Second World War. Family were members of St Denys church, mother was member of Mothers Union and Secretary for local Women's Institute. Suggests Evington was very rural and safe during his childhood, played in Piggy's Hollow and Shady Lane, recalls camping in Piggy's Hollow. Comments on joining Scouts. Father travelled a lot during war years, helping towns to rebuild after bomb damage. MC recalls playing in the woods and streams, helping at Kirby's farm, formed a cricket club on the park. Story about witnessing plane crash on St Denys Road, Evington. Local boys were playing in the field where it crashed, one woman killed. Reflects on life during Second World War, Anderson shelters, rationing, Soldiers billeted. Anecdote about riding ponies in the fields and falling in the stream. Describes Shady Lane Arboretum before the trees; recalls fields with highland cattle. Recalls fields used to build camp for American Army base, built by Black American Soldiers. Parachute regiment moved in, recalls prisoners of war from North Africa. Anecdote about breaking into the camp and stealing food (tins of spam). Recalls watching German prisoners of war play football and marching through the village. Comments on the winter of 1947 huge snowfall taller than him at the time, would go sledging. Recalls opening ceremony of Evington Park, meeting friends in park as a teenager. Comments on activities that took place at park, boules club, more recently fetes held at park. MD summarises thoughts on parks in Evington, feels fortunate to have open green spaces
