Peter Liddle (PL) interviewed by Claudia Losty (CL) on 22 November 2016. PL recalls visiting the Jewry Wall Museum and New Walk Museum. PL describes early interest in archaeology, attended Archaeological Society meetings and Oadby Archaeological Society meetings. Studied Economics at University in London, joined the City of London Archaeology Society and took part in digs on weekends. PL describes returning to Leicester, began assisting at various archaeological digs including 1970 Jubilee Square excavation. Comments on physical developments in Leicester during 1960s, including Vaughan Way and the underpass. Describes working full-time for Leicester City Museum Service between 1973 and 1976, excavations included the Chapel of Wyggeston's Hospital, the Austin Friars site. PL recalls trying to involve archaeologists in the planning process, began completing surveys in the county to expand knowledge of Leicester and heritage. Mentions involvement in the creation of the Leicestershire Museums Archaeological Fieldwork Group, now called the Leicestershire Field walkers. Describes excavation of Richard III and varying impacts of this discovery on public attitudes towards Leicester's heritage. Comments on role as Archaeological Survey Officer between 1976 and 1997. Description of significant archaeological discoveries in Leicester. Mentions involvement in Castle Park Working Party, bringing communities together for the first time Castle Motte at Leicester Castle opened to public. Comments on relationship between heritage and national identity and engaging communities in heritage events.
