Ghost sign for Marston's and an Off-Licence.
Founded in 1834 by John Marston, Marston's established the Horninglow Brewery in Burton upon Trent. In 1861, the brewery produced 3,000 barrels a year, but by 1898, the brewery produced 100,000 barrels a year. The company experienced several mergers, name changes and acquisitions, the biggest of which occurred in 2020 when Carlsberg UK and Marston's merged to form Carlsberg Marston's Brewing Company (CMBC). Not only does Marston's function as a brewery, but the company also operates over 1,350 pubs and bars across England and Wales as of 2024

Ghost sign for 'Double Diamond', a pale ale brewed by Ind Coope Ltd. During the 1960s, Double Diamond received a lot of advertising hence the many ghost signs in our collection. This sign faces northwest, away from the sun, which has protected it from more rapid deterioration.
Originally, Double Diamond was brewed by Allsopps in the 19th century until it came under the ownership of Ind Coope Ltd in 1934. In the 1950s, it was the UK's best-selling bottled beer and one of the most successful draught keg bitters of the 1960s and '70s

Ghost sign for R. Kingerley. Despite the severe deterioration of the sign, the words 'R. Kingerley' and 'Grocery' are still visible. On this same building, facing Clarendon Park Road, there is a second ghost sign advertising 'Cash, Grocery, Provision Stores' which is also available to view through our collection. Between 2016 and 2020, a small window was added to the building, partially obscuring the sign

Ghost sign for 'Gramo's' (meaning gramophones) and 'Records' sold by Dalton & Son Ltd. According to the 1951 Kelly's Directory, Dalton & Son Ltd. were radio dealers located at 76 Granby Street. This sign has almost entirely deteriorated since 2017

Ghost sign reading 'S. Russell & Sons Ltd. / Ironfounders / Enquiries - Next Gateway' with an arrow pointing to the right at the bottom. Between 2017 and 2020, the building was demolished, destroying the sign.
S. Russell & Sons Ltd. was founded in 1864 by Samuel Russell as engineers and machine tool makers on Bath-Lane in Leicester. In 1920, the company expanded their works to Bonchurch Street where this sign is located. The company was dissolved in 2005 after being taken over by Chamberlin & Hill Castings in 2004

According to the same photo from 1998, the sign for the Sabat Brothers has been painted over in black and the shop is called Ashapura Millers but still in the same line of business. However, this sign has been covered with a new advertising board in 2017

Ghost sign for Steamin' Billy Brewing Co. Ltd. of their signature Jack Russell. This sign was painted on the pub The Western, but was covered in 2021.
The Steamin' Billy Brewing Co. was founded in 1995 as a pub-owning company, brewing their own beers for local pubs in Leicester. The beer was named Steamin' Billy after the Jack Russell of the licensee Barry Lount of the Cow & Plough in Oadby, Leicester.
The pub was established in 1895 under Everards until 2007 when Steamin' Billy acquired the pub. After refurbishing The Western, and even introducing Leicester's first pub theatre in 2013, Steamin' Billy's lease ended in 2020. In 2021, Everards reacquired the licence, turning The Western into an all-day cafe and covering the Steamin' Billy Jack Russell with The Western's new logo

Ghost sign for 'Ansells' with their tagline 'the better beer'. This sign also advertises the location as an 'Off License'. According to several Kelly's Directories, 16 Cross Street listed several beer retailers here. In 1904, a Thomas Foxton, a Joseph Kew Whiting in 1932 and a Jasper R. McGorum in 1954. This off license likely competed with another beer retailer at 7 Cross Street. See Banks's ghost signs at this location in our collection.
Ansell's Brewery was founded in 1857 by Joseph Ansell, becoming Joseph Ansell and Sons in 1889. By 1934 and after merging with Holt Brewery Co., Ansells became one of the largest UK regional breweries and adopted Holt's signature red squirrel emblem. In 1961, Ansell's merged with Tetley Walker and Ind Coope to form Allied Breweries, and in 1992, Carlsberg UK merged with Allied Breweries to become Carlsberg-Tetley
Ghost sign for 'Fine Ales' from Bass & Co. on Osmaston Road, 2017.
Ghost sign for 'Fine Ales' from Bass & Co. advertising 'Fine Ales and Stout, India Pale Ale, Light Dinner, Bass's Guinness's & Strong Ale in halfpint bottles'. Before 2003, a window was added to the building obscuring the top right corner of the advertisement. Between 2015 and 2017, a second window was added to the building, obscuring the bottom right corner. This sign is located on the same wall as a ghost sign for Ind Coope and on the same building as a 'Double Diamond' ad facing Glossop Street. Each of these signs is visible in our collection.
Bass & Co. began in 1777 and eventually became one of the largest brewers in the UK before being bought by Coors in 2001
