    Ghost sign for Sid Mottram Cycles made up of two parts. On the left, the sign reads 'Sid Mottram / Racing & Touring Cycles', and on the right, the sign reads 'Falcon. Dawes. Holdsworth. Claud Butler. Sun & Raleigh Cycles'. Founded in 1946 by Sid and Gwen Mottram, Sid Mottram Cycles first opened on Checketts Road before expanding to Narborough Road. The prototype for Mottram frames were made by Holdsworth before being produced by Wally Green until 1955. From 1955 onwards, Mercian Cycles in Derby produced the frames. The shop even sponsored a racing team from the 1950s to the 1970s. In 1982, both Sid and Gwen Mottram passed away, leaving their daughters to run the shop. In 1985, the shop was closed

    Ghost sign for Jack Daniel's Tennessee Whiskey. The sign depicts the whiskey's iconic black label and reads 'Jack Daniel's / Old No. 7 Brand / Tennessee Whiskey'. Along the sides, the sign reads 'Made in Tennessee' and 'Bottled at the Distillery' and along the bottom of the sign, 'Your friends at Jack Daniel's remind you to drink responsibly'. In 2019, this sign was covered by a poster sign. Jack Daniel's is an American whiskey brand. Their distillery was founded in 1866 (or 1875 depending on historical record), but Jasper Newton Daniel, the founder, began distilling whiskey in 1864. Jack Daniel's is now one of the largest whiskey producers in the world

    Extract from full interview with Imogen Cox (Imogen_Cox_ 29th August 2017). An oral history interview from Imogen Cox, a learning officer for Leicester Museums. She talks about the sorts of events they put on for schools including sheets, trails and workshops - many surroudning the exhibitions and the cirriculum. She then goes onto talk about a particular example of the Ancient Egyptians and how the session is ran. There is also a discussion on the advantages and disadvantages of technology within these sessions

    Geoff Halford (GH) interviewed by Colin Hyde (CH) at Agnes House, 30 May 2017 and 6 June 2017. GH describes family background, based in Belgrave, Leicester. Mentions Father was a Hatter, comments on his business. Recalls learning to play the fiddle at grammar school, attended Alderman Newton's school, brief description of school. Learned classical violin from Loughborough peripatetic teacher, Mr Bass who played viola, taught violin. Story about Harvey Tucker who started a local folk club, used to go to the Ian Campbell folk club in Birmingham, decided to start one in Leicester, the Leicester Folk Song Club in the Red Cow in Belgrave Gate. GH recites lyrics to song about coal mining as example of song he used to sing. States guitars used a lot. Mentions C.P. Snow wrote about influence of Jewish people in Leicester; Harvey Tucker was Jewish, Father was cabinet maker. Dave Foulds was also involved with the club. Mentions hearing music coming from The Dover Castle on Dover Street, first realisation that folk music was being sung in pubs. Recalls buying sheet music from Chamberlain's shop opposite Leicester Train Station, also made instruments. Recalls Paul Tebbutt wanted to form a business selling instruments, advertised a Chamberlain mandolin that GH bought, started several businesses in Leicester. Paul later formed Pilgrim Guitars in 1970s, Martin Carthy visited one of his shops. GH states Tebbutt's business rose out of folk scene. Talks about repertoire of songs, many American protest songs, recites coal mining song once more. Recalls singing traditional English songs. Heard songs on a radio programme called Country Magazine, which included a folk song each week. GH entered competitions at the Leicester Music Festival, met with Toni Savage who taught him breathing exercises, Toni later took over management of Red Cow. States the music was linked to politics of the left

A second layer is visible beneath this sign with the initials 'DB' encircled, likely meaning David Bentley, and more text which is unclear. Construction of a new building between 2003 and 2008 partially obscured the sign from view. Between 2020 and 2022, construction on the neighboring building completely covered this sign

    Ghost sign for 'Motor Compound' on Nedham Street. Before 2004, this sign was partially covered by a sign for 'Neyta Motor Engineers Ltd.'. In 2012, a new sign for 'Seedat Carpets & Flooring' was installed next to the 'Neyta Motor Engineers Ltd.' further obscuring the ghost sign. In 2015, the 'Seedat Carpets & Flooring' sign was replaced with a newer one, but the ghost sign is still obscured. This building has two other ghost signs for the same business. The sign located on the corner of Nedham Street and Upper Charnwood Street reading 'Bearings' is avilable to view in our collection. The second sign, facing Upper Charnwood Street, has remained covered by a Neyta Motor Engineers Ltd. sign since at least 2008. Only the letter 'b' is visible
