Ghost sign for 'Baker & Soars Ltd.', a company in the plumbing industry. Established in 1943 on Wellington Street in Leicester, Baker & Soars Ltd. is still in existence, servicing both the public and plumbing trade. Between 2003 and 2005, the building below this ghost sign was demolished and revealed a secondary sign reading 'Warehouse Manufacturer'. According to the 1941 Kelly's Directory, Baker & Soars Ltd. was located at 140 Wellington Street, but the 1954 directory lists the plumbers' merchants on 83 to 87 Wellington Steet and their store on 19 Waterloo Street

Ghost sign for 'Barlow Blinds est 1887'. The initials of the artist, N4T4, are also visible. Barlow Blinds were established in 1887 by Mr E.A Barlow working from a small factory unit in Stanley Street. Having been bought by the Coleman family, the business moved to Green Lane Road after the Second World War and then moved to its current home on Brightin Road in 1998. The artist N4T4 has contributed to Leicester's street art festival and his work can be seen at other sites in the City

Ghost sign for The United Chemists' Association Ltd. (UCAL)'s Iodised Throat Lozenges. The left side of this sign is difficult to read but is separate from the UCAL's sign. It reads: '...hrome Films'. On the right side, the sign reads: 'Throat / UCAL / Iodised Throat Lozenges / Safety First / 8 1/2 d per tin Obtainable Within / Also good for Coughs, Colds, and all Sore Throats'. Along the very bottom of the sign is very small text for 'Tickets & Co.', potentially the sign painters's signature. The entry from 1972 shows the surrounding areas of these signs, including advertisements for Selo Films and A.F. & T.W.J. Mattock Pharmacy.
The United Chemists' Association Ltd. (UCAL) were founded in 1904 when Harold Miller of Sheffield encouraged a group of pharmacists to form an association for making their own products. A production facility was established in Cheltenham. At its peak, the company supplied 7000 private chemists throughout Britain, but in 1972, the group was acquired by a rival and production at Cheltenham ceased. Ghost sign for 'Double Diamond', a pale ale brewed by Ind Coope Ltd. The sign also reads 'Off License'. This sign is now severely deteriorated. During the 1960s, Double Diamond received a lot of advertising hence the many ghost signs in our collection.
Originally, Double Diamond was brewed by Allsopps in the 19th century until it came under the ownership of Ind Coope Ltd in 1934. In the 1950s, it was the UK's best-selling bottled beer and one of the most successful draught keg bitters of the 1960s and '70s
