The Challenges of Islamic Communication in Facing the Normalization of Romantic Behavior of Teenagers in Banda Aceh City

This study aims to analyze the challenges of da’wah communication in responding to the normalization of romantic behavior among adolescents in Banda Aceh. The research focuses on identifying the forms of romantic behavior, the responses of da’wah actors, and the barriers that arise in delivering moral messages within the youth digital culture. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach, with data collected through in-depth interviews and social observation. The research informants consist of five individuals, including one young da’i and four adolescents from diverse social backgrounds. The findings reveal that romantic behaviors such as riding in pairs, spending time together privately at cafés, and displaying intimacy on social media are increasingly perceived as socially acceptable. This normalization is driven by digital media influence, popular cultural trends, the weakening of parental supervision, and adolescents’ psychological need for social recognition. Adolescents do not reject religion itself, but rather resist forms of da’wah that are judgmental, rigid, and lacking communicative sensitivity. Instead, they prefer da’wah that is persuasive, conversational, uses contemporary youth language, and is disseminated through social media and direct engagement in their social environment. The analysis employs the Uses and Gratifications Theory, which explains that adolescents actively select and consume media content based on their psychological and social needs. Consequently, romantic content becomes more attractive than conventional religious communication. The study concludes that the effectiveness of da’wah in the digital era depends on the ability of preachers to adapt their communication strategies, optimize the use of social media, and provide alternative gratifications that align with Islamic values

Petroleum Degradation by Bacteria Explored from Logending Mangrove Sediments

Oil spills resulting from shipping activities, tanker-based oil transportation, and fuel oil usage can cause coastal pollution, particularly in sensitive ecosystems such as mangroves. More than 90% of petroleum consists of hydrocarbons with complex carbon chain structures, making them difficult to decompose. Biological remediation using microorganisms offers a promising alternative for pollution mitigation, as microbes can degrade petroleum components and oxidizing hydrocarbons. This study aimed to evaluate the petroleum-degrading ability of selected bacterial isolates obtained from mangrove sediments at Logending Beach. The research employed experimental and survey methods. The primary parameter measured was Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons (TPH), while supporting parameters included pH and bacterial population density. The study consisted of several stages, including bacterial isolation, screening, and evaluation of the petroleum degradation capacity of selected isolates. The results identified two potential bacterial isolates capable of degrading crude oil. Isolate LG62 exhibited a degradation efficiency of 71.40%, while isolate LG105 showed a degradation efficiency of 57.10%. Petroleum concentrations of 2% (v/v) and 5% (v/v) were degraded more effectively than higher concentrations. Overall, the two bacterial isolates (LG62 and LG105) from Logending mangrove sediments demonstrated significant potential as bioremediation agents for petroleum hydrocarbon contamination

This research explores the concept and implementation of inclusive religious education within the framework of a democratic and multicultural society in Indonesia. As a country with diverse religions, ethnicities, and cultures, Indonesia faces both opportunities and challenges in strengthening tolerance through education. Using a qualitative approach with a literature review and case analysis in selected schools, the study examines how inclusive practices are integrated into religious education. The findings reveal that inclusive religious education significantly contributes to fostering tolerant character among students, improving interfaith understanding, and strengthening social harmony. Nevertheless, the study identifies several obstacles, such as limited teacher training in multicultural competence, inadequate teaching resources, and the insufficient integration of democratic values in the curriculum. The paper emphasizes that inclusive religious education will only be effective if supported by a strong policy framework, curriculum reform, and comprehensive teacher preparation. Therefore, this research recommends improvements in curriculum development, teacher education, and government policy to ensure that students are nurtured in an environment that cultivates tolerance, respect, and democratic values in a multicultural contex

    No full text
Among the problems faced by Qur\u27an memorizers is the ability to memorize quickly, but memorization is often weak or difficult to maintain due to the lack of precise methods that are adapted to the character of the students. This study aims to analyze and describe the process of implementing the independent and group muroja\u27ah method to improve the memorization of the Qur\u27an at the Tahfidz House of Ma\u27had Abu Ubaidah bin Al-Jarrah Medan. The descriptive qualitative method is used through in-depth interviews, observations, and document studies, with interactive data analysis through reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawn. The results showed that independent muroja\u27ah fostered independence, discipline, and self-correction skills, effective for long-term memorization retention, while group muroja\u27ah increased social motivation, tajweed accuracy, and letter makhraj through direct tasmi\u27. The muroja\u27ah group excelled in the quality of reading, while the independent muroja\u27ah was better in the quantity and consistency of the daily. This study concludes that the optimal improvement in memorization is obtained through the integration of the two methods according to the character and phase of student development

Student Voices on Digital Pedagogy: A Case Study of Zoom-Based TOEFL Preparation for Non-English Department Students

    No full text
The increasing reliance on synchronous video-conferencing platforms in post-pandemic higher education has transformed the delivery of high-stakes language preparation programs, including TOEFL courses. While previous studies have largely focused on test score improvement and general online learning implementation, limited research has explored students’ reflective experiences in Zoom-mediated TOEFL preparation contexts. This qualitative case study investigates non-English department students’ feedback and reflections on the use of Zoom in a TOEFL preparation program at a private university in Indonesia. Data were collected through reflective journals and semi-structured interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings reveal two overarching themes. First, students perceive Zoom as facilitating learning effectiveness, flexibility, and real-time interaction, which support their understanding of TOEFL materials and test-taking strategies. Second, although the platform enhances motivation and accessibility, technical constraints such as unstable internet connections and reduced face-to-face interaction remain challenges. By foregrounding student voice, this study contributes nuanced insights into how synchronous digital pedagogy shapes learners’ experiences in test-oriented language instruction. The findings offer pedagogical implications for instructors and institutions seeking to optimize Zoom-based TOEFL preparation programs while addressing technological and interactional limitations

Education plays a fundamental role in shaping human personality, especially character development through a planned and continuous process. This study aims to analyze the role of character education and parenting in shaping the personality of students in a pesantren environment. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through participatory observation for 3 months, in-depth interviews with 15 santri, 5 caregivers, and 3 kyai, as well as analysis of curriculum documents and daily records. The findings show that consistent parenting patterns through the example set by the clerics (80% of students imitate positive behavior), the habit of worship such as daily tahajud and weekly muhadharah, and hirz discipline (strict supervision) contribute significantly to student character. Specifically, religious attitudes increased from 65% to 92% (behavioral observation), morals were nurtured with a 40% decrease in violations in 6 months, and social behavior improved through tahfidz group collaboration (75% active participation). These results confirm the integration of character education with systematic parenting as the key to optimizing students\u27 personalities. The study\u27s conclusion recommends replicating this model in other Islamic boarding schools to strengthen Islamic-based character
