An Examination on Educational Improvement Based on Principles and Practice at the University of Sydney in Australia
No full textapplication/pdfThis paper examines characteristics of the strategy of university educational improvement at the University of Sydney in Australia. The University of Sydney is carrying out educational improvement at the whole university level strategically in order to enhance and help assure the quality of teaching and student learning. 1. The Institute of Teaching and Learning (ITL) at the University of Sydney conducts a number of strategic projects as the academic development unit in the University. ITL uses research generated internally and elsewhere in work with members of the University community aimed at enhancing and assuring the quality of teaching and learning. ITL provides structured programs for university academic faculty. Among those programs, the foundational three-day program titled "Principles and Practice (P&P)" is designed for new coming academic faculty and inexperienced university teachers in particular. 2. In the P&P program, university academic faculty are not only given practical teaching skills but also a basic introduction to higher education teaching and learning principles. That basic introduction is based on scholarship in teaching or learning theory such as Biggs' 3P model (Presage-Process-Product) on students' learning in context. ITL underlines the need for university teachers to approach effectively students' learning in context. In other words, P&P provides opportunities for conceptual-change of university teachers' perception about teaching and learning through research-led practice. Participants also acknowledge the important role of evaluating learning outcomes to facilitate teaching and learning improvement. 3. ITL also has an institutional research (JR) function within its unit. The survey officer at ITL conducts the design and reporting of the various large scale surveys such as Student Course Experience Questionnaire (SCEQ) in order to facilitate institutionally aligned teaching evaluation systems. Each faculty member examines the impact of scholarly teaching on students' learning outcomes using evidence data from SCEQ or Unit of Study Evaluation questionnaires. They are engaged in understanding variation in student learning experiences through evidence-based educational improvement. Electromyographic patterns during kendo strikes and upper limb reaction time in response to light signal
No full textapplication/pdfWe examined muscle activity patterns in the upper limbs during Kendo strikes using electromyographic (EMG) reaction time.\
Fourteen males (mean age, 21.7±1.0 years; height, 169.7±7.0 cm; weight, 67.5±7.2 kg; 7 kendo athletes and 7 non-kendo athletes) were asked to perform Kendo strikes in response to visual stimulation from a flashing light signal. The strikes, Hiki-Men (HM) to the frontal region of head and Hiki-kote (HK) to the right wrist, were performed as quickly as possible with a bamboo sword (Shinai), using the upper limbs.\
The EMG signals from the right (R) and left (L) biceps brachii, the R and L triceps brachii, and the R flexor carpi ulnaris muscles were recorded along with the elbow joint angle and hitting shock signals. Muscle activity patterns, total task time (TTT), pre-motor time (PMT), motor time (MT), and action time (AT) were also measured. Results were as follows:\
1) No significant difference was observed between kendo and non-kendo athletes for TTT, PMT, MT and AT in HM and HK tasks.\
2) Kendo athletes altered the timing of the recruitment of muscle in accordance with the different striking tasks, i.e., HM and HK tasks.\
3) Non-kendo athletes altered the average EMG amplitude in accordance with the different striking tasks.\
These results suggest that there is no difference in time factor on neuromuscular function for HM and HK tasks between kendo and non-kendo athletes. However, differences were observed in muscle activity;\

Segmentalized Vertical Specialization Share in ASEAN and East Asia Trade : An Asian International Input-Output Analysis, 1990-1995-2000

I calculate segmentalized elements of the enhanced VS model matrix using IDE-JETRO Asia International Input-Output Tables in 1990, 1995 and 2000 now available. Each of these elements has the information about export sector, export destination (country and sector) and inducted import origin (country and sector) Especially, the growth of Electronics and Electronic Products sector's VSs are remarkable and I breakdown them into the factors, as export/gross output ratio and import dependency of intermediate goods by industrial sector and import induction ratio caused by the character of total industrial structure. Gaining assent in educational situations? : Reconsiderations about persuading children
No full textapplication/pdfFrom the 1980s on, facing the need to ensure a non-coercive teaching in schools, persuasion as an educational method has been highly praised by scholars in educational science, education-related agents and teachers. This method had schoolteachers to meet the following two requirements: 1. The teacher shall gain the agreement of the pupil about the validity of the taught content in order to perform teaching. 2. In cases where the teaching is judged to be imperative and the pupil's agreement cannot be gained, teaching without agreement is allowed. The purpose of this article is to demonstrate the efficiency and limits of such a persuasion method from an ethical viewpoint. Referring to the debate on informed consent and assent in the field of medical science and bioethics, the following three arguments will be made clear: l. Since the grounding of beneficence has become impossible under postmodernity, the persuasion method is essential in order to legitimate the beneficence of the schoolteacher. 2. The persuasion method acts also as an opposing factor to the present tendency toward standardization in school teaching. 3.
