A randomized controlled trial was performed to compare a group of patients doing physical exercise during the first 2 h of hemodialysis sessions and another group doing physical exercise at home. The descriptive variables, dialysis doses measured by KtV, and rebounds (urea, creatinine, potassium, phosphorus), were recorded. For 69 patients: the mean KtV was 1.84; the 30-min rebound of creatinine was 32.37%, urea 24.39%, potassium 15.31%, and phosphorus 51.29%. For each patient, the basal measurement was compared with those determined when performing physical exercise; no statistically significant differences were observed between the changes determined to dose and rebound in the group with hemodialysis exercise compared to those of the home exercise group. In conclusion, performing physical exercise during the first 2 hours of hemodialysis sessions neither lowered postdialysis molecules rebound nor improved dialysis dose

Este artículo se encuentra disponible en la página web de la revista en la siguiente URL: https://bmcvetres.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s12917-019-1946-1Background: Pedobarographic analyses detect pressure redistribution among limbs and within limbs in humans, equids and dogs. The main objective of this study was to assess the usefulness of a set of pedobarographic parameters for the detection of lameness, as well as for its suitability for assessing the effects of therapies against osteoarthritis in dogs. With this purpose, eleven large-breed lame dogs with unilateral osteoarthritis due to elbow dysplasia were evaluated using a pressure platform prior to (D0) and after 3 months (D90) of treatment with mavacoxib, a COX-2 selective NSAID. The obtained parameters were: pressure distribution between lame and sound limbs, as well as paw area, mean pressure, and peak pressure of both lame and sound limbs. Results: The results showed statistical differences in all these parameters between lame and sound limbs at D0; however, at D90, differences were significantly decreased as result of the treatment, indicating a substantial functional recovery under the study design conditions. Conclusions: The provided data prove the suitability of this novel technique in canine models for the quantitative and objective assessment of lameness, but also for the evaluation of treatments for lameness caused by articular pain

Universidad San Pablo-CE

Julien Freund, “Theorist of Essences”: a philosophical clarification attempt

The political theory of Julien Freund, especially known for his magnum opus of 1965, L’essence du politique, rests on the philosophical and epistemological bases that he himself defined as “theory of essences”. This theoretical model, even if he applied at first to the political, was conceived nevertheless as an instrument of global analysis of social phenomena in an ontophenomenological and, consequently, anthropological sense. There is not yet, however, a complete exposition of this theory, on which we intend to offer here a first systematic study, in relation especially to two issues: the historical circumstance in which the theory was forged and its general epistemological intention, that can only be properly understood in its original metaphysical sense

Material and methods: A total of 52 subjects with concomitant CM and TMD and 30 asymptomatic subjects were included in the study. The pressure pain threshold (PPT), maximal mouth opening (MMO) and a series of self-reported factors were compared. Results: There were 52CM and TMD (92.3% women and 7.7% men; age¼46.2 ± 9.5) and 30 asymptomatic subjects (80% women and 20% men; age¼47.4 ± 10). Differences were found between patients with CM and TMD and asymptomatic participants (p<.01) when comparing the PPTs in the trigeminal and extra-trigeminal regions. The PPT for the trigeminal region was predicted by depressive symptoms (variance of 18%) as well as disability and craniofacial pain (variance of 20%). The extratrigeminal region PPT was predicted by depressive symptoms (variance of 10%), and pain-free MMO was predicted by disability and craniofacial pain (variance of 24%). Conclusions: This study suggests that patients with CM and TMD present with generalized mechanical hyperalgesia. In addition, an association between sensorimotor, psychological and disability variables was observed
