This article discusses Aquinas’ reception of the Augustinian distinction between ratio inferior and superior. Though not a central aspect of Aquinas’ thought, it is a signifi cant pointer to the presence of Augustinian patterns of thought in a non-theological part of his work. After a general survey of the presence of this distinction in the opera omnia of Aquinas, his use of this topic in some specific instances is discussed: the distinction between contemplative and active life, the division of human faculties, and the moral problem of peevish delight.
This article studies the first period of the monastery of San Benito el Real in Valladolid from its foundation in 1390 to the appearance of the Benedictine Congregation of Valladolid in 1431, considering in particular the support from the king. It analyses the circumstances experienced by John I of Castile, emphasising his project of monastic reform and his wish to recover the Crown of Portugal after the military disaster at Aljubarrota. It also studies the reasons for the choice of the town, the characteristics of the royal ‘alcázar’ (castle) and the settlement of refugees from Portugal in the nearby district of ‘Rehoyo’. John I intended to found a Benedictine community inside the palace complex where the members of the royal chapel worked, but over the course of time the Benedictine community increased while the court gradually stopped making use of the monastery.
Before becoming a customs duty, the almojarifazgo consisted of a set of heterogeneous income received by the Castilian monarchs. Originally, most of these rents were demanded by the Muslim rulers of the cities then conquered by the Christian kings. However, during the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries the kings were giving them to the lords and local councils and kept for themselves the most interesting of all, the customs duty. The kingdom of Murcia is almost the only example to study how this transformation because it is the only territory that has retained suffi cient documentation to analyse it.Antes de convertirse en un impuesto aduanero, el almojarifazgo consistió en un conjunto de rentas heterogéneas percibidas por los monarcas castellanos.
In the European comparison Tuscany stands out by having the most important business archives (merchant, banking and manufacturing fi rms) for economic history of the later Middle Ages. The combined archives of Florence and Prato alone have around 2,500 account books, a fi gure greatly exceeding those available in the rest of Italy and Europe put together. The present paper considers the corporate account books published in the last 50 years, with reference, moreover, to the fi rst half of the XXth century. The aim is to emphasize the role played by accounting sources written by the merchants of Tuscan towns in latemedieval economic history.
