    Get PDF
The absence of a royal mausoleum in Castile similar to Saint-Denis or Westminster has been traditionally considered a result of the kings’ disinterest in funerary ceremonials and a consequence the changing boundaries of an expanding kingdom. The current article aims to analyse the funerary spaces of the Castilian- Leonese monarchy during the Middle Ages and to suggest the main obstacles to the consolidation of a dynastic royal mausoleum. This paper will re-examine the role of the Reconquista in this process and will try to show how the spread of funerary spaces and the non-consolidation of a centralized royal mausoleum was the consequence of specific circumstances between the second half of the thirteenth and the end of the fourteenth century, the period when the rest of Western monarchies created their own mausoleums.

    Get PDF
At the turn of the sixteenth century, the archdeacon of Burgos cathedral Pedro Fernández de Villegas undertook a translation of Dante’s Inferno in coplas de arte mayor. Commissioned by Juana de Aragon –Fernando el Católico’s natural daughter–, this translation was printed in 1515 and was accompanied with a commentary. The article discusses the main features of the translation, which are analysed in the light of the Spanish poetic tradition (especially Juan de Mena) and of the medieval exegetical tradition of Dante’s work (Cristoforo Landino, L’Ottimo commento or Benvenuto da Imola). A portray of Juana de Aragon, mandator and recipient of the translation, is also provided.

    Get PDF
This paper deals with the privileges issued by the elites of the Castilian councils, focusing on the process of negotiation that was necessary in order to obtain and preserve this differentiated rank. The special political situation in the Castilian kingdom during 15th century is the keystone to understanding the development of some specific conditions that generated this privileged position as well as the conflicts that this situation provoked. The agreements and disputes that appears allows us to explain both the dynamics of the privileges and that of the privileged social groups.

    Get PDF
The geometry in codex 80 of the Capitular Archive has traditionally been understood as a complete text and attributed to Gerbert of Aurillac (c. 940-1003). From a new reading of the text, we can say that it is a miscellaneous writing about geometry, composed of three independent parts: one containing the Geometria Incerti Auctoris apocryphical by Gerbert of Aurillac (c. 940-1003); another one is a fragment of De Nuptiis Philologiae et Mercurii by Martianus Capella (fl . 430) from Ergasticis Schematibus of Book VII of the Geometry; and finally there is a gloss to the Elementa by Euclides (c. 325-c. 265 bC.) by Al-Ḥajjāj ibn Yūsuf ibn Maṭar (786-833). The interpretation of the geometrical propositions provides knowledge about the indirect measure of places which are inaccessible using medieval instrumental, the astrolabe, mirrors, cane and squares.[ct] La geometria del còdex 80 de l’Arxiu Capitular de Tortosa ha estat tradicionalment atribuïda, com un text únic, a Gerbert d’Orlhac (c. 940-1003).

Since Toubert published his research on Lazio, the concept of incastellamento has become an important starting point to explain Feudalism in good part of Medieval Mediterranean Europe. Far from to trying to validate the viability of this explanatory model for the Iberian Peninsula, we have conducted an analysis of the role of fortresses and the nature of bonds between monarchy and the aristocracies from the Toscana and the Cea’s bank, in the Tierra de Campos region. Our main purpose is to observe the existence of similarities and differences between both areas and their incidence in the development of Feudal logics.

El lèxic cortès i cavalleresc en Curial e Güelfa: mots patrimonials i interferències culturals

    Get PDF
Curial and Güelfa, by an unknown author, is a chivalric romance written in a realistic style. Planned within the medieval tradition, although infl uenced by Italian Humanism, it was composed in fluent Catalan, but subject to several linguistic and cultural interferences. It was probably conceived and written in Italy in the decade of 1440. The author not only knows deeply the courteous volgare language, but also the literary one (especially Boccaccio), with which he enriches a Catalan language probably learnt in Valencia. He also innovates in the courtly and chivalric vocabulary of his mother tongue with the introduction of expressions, proverbs and words –both colloquial and learned– not only in Italian, but also in French, Occitan and Spanish. All these traits help to portray a writer that knew the Lombard geography and society very well (Milano and Monferrato). However, we can deduce from the lexical field we study –among other evidence– that its lexicon could be linked to the Neapolitan court of Alphonse the Magnanimous.[ct] Curial e Güelfa, d’autoria desconeguda, és una novel·la cavalleresca, realista; planejada des de la tradició medieval, però influïda per l’Humanisme italià.
