In the court of the Catholic Monarchs (r. 1474-1516), Isabel I of Castile and Fernando II of Aragon, that of a ruling queen, humanists constructed theories of what it meant to be a ruler. Alonso Ortiz, one of the humanists attached to their court, composed the Latin text, Liber de educatione Johannis Serenissimi Principis et primogeniti regum potentissimorum Castelle Aragonum et Siciliae Ferdinandi et Helisabet inclyta prosapia coniugum clarissimorum, a book that reflects an idealized and disempowered humanist vision of elite women that contrasts with the agency they wielded in historical fact.
This work deals with the patronage of the queens-consort and princesses in the Western part of the Iberian Peninsula from a comparative point of view. Its main aim is to analyze the ways of acting common both to Castile and Portugal and, at the same time, to examine the differences between both kingdoms in the period that covers the late 14th century and the beginnings of the 16th century, corresponding to the rule of the Trastamara and the Avís dynasties. The analysis of their sponsorship shows a wide variety of themes inside the prevalence of religious subjects. The cultural initiatives of these noble women must be considered in a context where monarchy was highly exalted, a feature characteristic of the origins of the Modern State at the end of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance period.
This article analyses the religiosity of Philippa and Catherine of Lancaster, queens of Portugal and Castile, in the framework of the respective royal families. The chronicles of the time, the court poetry, monastic foundations and iconography transmit images of virtue that must be assessed from three points of view: personal piety, courtesan religiosity and historiographical discourse. Messages made about the role to be played by queens contribute to strengthen the dynastic legitimacy, which was essential for the Avís and Trastámara families. Philippa was described in the time of king Duarte I as a perfect and imitable model of religiosity. Catherine did not enjoy the same consideration because of her activities during the regency of John II.Este artículo analiza la religiosidad de Felipa y Catalina de Láncaster, reinas de Portugal y Castilla, en el marco de las respectivas familias reales.
This article discusses the figure of David, king of Israel, and the way in which, through the use of typological symbolism, he was summoned as a model and prefiguration for some Christian rulers in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries: Sverrir Sigurðarson portrayed himself as the “David of Norway”; Louis IX was compared to David for his Christian virtues; for John Lackland the comparison emphasized the electivity of the English monarchy; finally, Frederick II, the universal emperor and Lord’s anointed, presented himself in Jerusalem as king David’s legitimate heir and successor.[it] L’articolo è dedicato alla figura di Davide, re d’Israele, e al modo in cui, tramite il ricorso al simbolismo tipologico, egli fu evocato come modello e prefi gurazione di alcuni sovrani cristiani tra XII e XIII secolo: Sverrir Sigur›arson raffi gurò se stesso come il “Davide della Norvegia”; Luigi IX fu accostato a Davide per le sue virtù cristiane; per Giovanni Senzaterra il paragone doveva ricordare al re l’elettività della monarchia inglese; infi ne da Gerusalemme Federico II, imperatore universale e unto del Signore, si presentò al mondo come legittimo erede e successore di Davide

Within the history of the Nasrid kingdom of Granada, a number of women tresspassed the threshold of their harem to play important roles in different aspects of the court. This was specifically the case of the sultana Fāṭima bint al-Aḥmar (d. 749/1349), the daughter of emir Muḥammad II, who can be considered the first lady of this lineage to participate in the political affairs of the kingdom. Due to the great influence that this woman exerted in the political arena, this article will be devoted to reconstructing both her life and her personality, according to the information provided by the preserved Arabic sources. Her political activities, developed throughout the complex rules of her two brothers, Muḥammad III y Naṣr, her first-born son Ismā῾īl I, and her two grandsons Muḥammad IV y Yūsuf I, will be also analyzed in depth because of their importance for the kingdom’s history.
