    Get PDF
Through adopting a comparative approach, this article examines the instructions the late medieval rulers of the Crown of Aragon, Florence and Venice gave to their envoys sent to the Mamluk Sultanate (Egypt-Syria, 1250-1517). These sources vividly show that the interactions between the Christian emissaries and the sultan and his entourage followed different phases and relied on various forms of communication, both verbal (spoken and written messages) and non-verbal (exchange of gifts, ceremonial). The practical and theoretical analysis of these ambassadorial instructions shows the different sets of rules and strategies underlying diplomatic dialogue between Christian powers and the Mamluks.[it] L’articolo prende in esame i documenti conservati che riportano le istruzioni impartite dalle autorità di tre poteri cristiani (Corona d’Aragona, Firenze e Venezia) ai loro ambasciatori diretti al sultanato musulmano mamelucco (Egitto-Siria, 1250-1517).

    Get PDF
The episcopal library, in its double definition as a bishop’s private library and an institutional library, is well documented during the late medieval period (13th-15thcenturies). Drawing on diverse documents (chancellery, ecclesiastical, notarial, etc.) and preserved codices (some of which include ex-libris, notes of possession, heraldic emblems and other indications), it is possible to consider episcopal books and libraries of the time in the Iberian Peninsula. Until recently, the study of such documents had largely been limited to the editing and analysis of the documents in which they were collected. In recent decades, however, studies on the patronage of bishops, whether individually or in larger groups (as is the case of the patronage of Catalan and Aragonese bishops in late medieval times), have flourished. The Pontifical, the “Bishop’s Book”, a specific type of book which is very significant because of its luxurious execution, has also received particular scholarly attention.

This study analyses two 14th-century episcopal funerary ensembles in the cathedral of Pamplona. Firstly, that of Bishop Miguel Pérez de Legaria (1287-1304), which consists of a tomb and funerary chapel –both disappeared–, is brought into focus as the oldest expressly-built, privately-owned funerary chapel in Navarre, with hypotheses about its structure, location and chronology. Secondly, an analysis of the ensemble of Bishop Miguel Sánchez de Asiain (1357-1364), which consists only of the tomb, draws attention to the existence of links with Italy other than those indicated so far, to the use of Speculum Humanae Salvationis as a textual source for the entire figurative programme, and to the exceptional nature of the iconography of double intercession in the European and Hispanic context, before concluding with a possible proposal for the identity of its promoterSe analizan dos conjuntos funerarios episcopales del siglo XIV pertenecientes a la catedral de Pamplona.

    Get PDF
As a consequence of James I’s conquest, a group of converts from Islam identified in the written sources as batiats, the baptised or neophytes, appeared in thirteenth-century Valencian society. Evidence for this group is quite scarce, which proves their limited demographic role even in towns and cities, where they mainly settled. This paper seeks to establish their reasons for converting to the new religion, paying attention to their economic and social background, and their level of integration in society.[ca] La societat valenciana del segle XIII, com a conseqüència de la conquesta de Jaume I, va originar un col·lectiu de convertits de l’islam que la documentació identifica com a batiats, batejats o neòfits.
