    Get PDF
The development of a complex second-hand market in a large city such as Valencia in the Late Middle Ages is used here to analyse the clothing sector, and to establish how, and by what means, trading in already worn clothes served to bring the new fashions that were emerging from the mid-14th century onwards to wider sectors of the population. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to evaluate the importance of the flea market in the diffusion of a certain consumerist spirit when the productive forces had not yet developed sufficiently to supply these new demands.

The introduction of public notaries in the Kingdom of Murcia is an interesting example of the model by which the profession was rapidly established, typical of the recently conquered territories in the Iberian Peninsula during the thirteenth century, that was studied for the cases of Seville, Cordoba, Valencia and Majorca. Through an analysis of the legislation and the notarial documents preserved, we seek to analyse the parallels and divergences regard to those other cases in the peninsula, the particular characteristics arising from the mixture of repopulation groups from both the Crown of Castile and the Crown of Aragon, and the adaptation of public notaries to the political changes that occurred in the Kingdom of Murcia in the thirteenth century.

    Get PDF
One of the great questions in the history of medieval currency in Castile is the date of the appearance of the silver real and the circumstances surrounding it. A single document issued in the time of Pedro I demostrates its existence, to which can be added to another solitary mention present in the chronicle of his reign drawn by Pero López de Ayala. We also have other evidence about the hoarding of silver, in the form of the form of coins or ingots, by the Castilian monarch. These written sources are supplemented by a comparative study of the real with the gros tournois, the French silver coin of the time. All these references allow us to provide an approximate date for the first issue.

The Monte di Pietà, a public citizen bank active in Italy since 1462, implemented the cardinal principles of the circular economy: to make products as durable and efficient as possible and, consequently, to reduce waste by also upgrading assets that apparently could no longer be used. The Monte received garments from the “poorest of the poor” and in return granted them some credit money. This offered the Monti’s clients and objects a second chance and prevented those who were in a situation of distress from ending up in a state of irretrievable poverty.
