Guano and Rice-Hull Ash Application for Flowering Induction on Orange Jessamine (Murraya paniculata (L.) Jack)
Orange jessamine (Murraya paniculata (L.) Jack) has high economical values due to its medicinal properties. Orange jessamine leaves contain flavonoid, mexotionin and coumarin. Orange jessamine flowers contain scopoletin that can lower blood pressure and can be used as an anti-inflammatory agent and as anti-allergic. Orange jessamine is often used as an ornamental plant because it has beautiful flowers similar to jasmine, has nice scent, and red color fruits. The aim of this research is to study the effects of guano and rice-hull ash application on flowering induction of orange jessamine. The research was conducted at an organic experimental farm, Bogor Agricultural University, Darmaga (6°30' – 6°45' S, 106°30'-106°45' E) from December 2014 to June 2015 using randomized complete block design. The experiment used four treatments, i.e. guano at 0.4 kg per plant, combination of guano (0.4 kg per plant) and rice-hull ash (3.0 kg per plant), rice-hull ash 3.0 kg per plant and without fertilisation as control. The results showed that the application of rice-hull ash increased plant height and leaf number. Guano application significantly increased the intensity of leaf color in mature orange jessamine leaves. Rice-hull ash application increased flower number at 12 and 20 weeks after application.Keywords: chlorophyll, flower number, flower weight, NPK value, organic farmin
Agronomic Requirements of Tomatoes and Production Methods in the Red River Delta of Vietnam
Tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) (Solanaceae) is one of the most economically important vegetable crops in the Red River Delta (RRD) of Northern Vietnam. The recent market demands for tomatoes in both domestic and overseas markets have led to an increasing cultivated area for the crop in the RRD. To support growers in producing healthy and quality produce, this paper presents in detail the agronomic requirements of tomatoes regarding temperatures, light, water, suitable soil types and nutrients. Cultivation techniques are discussed to provide a general guide for developing appropriate management strategies, depending on specific soil types, cropping seasons, cultivars and availability of resources. In addition, six major pests have been defined, providing useful information for developing an integrated pest management (IPM) program for tomato production in the region
Estimation of Genetic Parameter for Quantitative Characters of Pepper (Capsicum annuum L.)
The research was conducted at Leuwikopo Experimental Field and Plant Breeding Laboratory of IPB, Dramaga, Bogor, West Java, Indonesia from October 2012 to April 2013. Crossing population between C15 and C2 genotype were used to study genetic parameters for quantitative characters in pepper. All the characters were not controlled by maternal effect, except fruit length. Broad-sense heritability were high for plant height, stem diameter, dichotomous height, days to flower, days to harvest; and medium for fruit length and diameter. Narrow-sense heritability was high for stem diameter, dichotomous height, days for flowering; medium for plant height, days to harvest; and low for fruit length and diameter. Influence of Manure, Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium Fertilizer Application on Growth of One-year-old Oil Palms on Marginal Soil in Jonggol, Bogor, Indonesia
The oil palms (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) are highlyefcient oil producers. It produces ve to seven timesmore vegetable oil per hectare than soybean, sunower,and rapeseed. The objectives of this research were tostudy the role of organic and N, P, and K fertilizers ongrowth of one-year-old immature oil palm on marginalsoil in Jonggol. The research was conducted at IPBCargill Teaching Farm (ICTF) of Oil Palm, Jonggol,Bogor,West Java from March 2013 to March 2014. Theexperiment was arranged in a factorial experimentfollowing a randomized block design with threereplications. The rst factor was organic fertilizer(manure) consisting of 0 (O), 15 (O1) and 30 (O2) kg pertree per year. The second factor was inorganic fertilizerconsisting of 0 (S0); 0.25 kg N + 0.25 kg P O + 0.39 kg 2 5K O(S ) 0.50 k N+ 0.50 kg P O + 0.78 kg K O(S ) 2 25 2 1and g 2per tree. The results demonstrated that application ofmanure up to 30 kg per tree per year did not affect thegrowth of one-year-old oil palm. Application of 0.50 kg N+ 0.50 kg P O + 0.78 kg K O highest 2 5 2 per tree gave theresult in increasing frond production, stem girth, and leafnutrient concentration. The results of leaf analysis andplant growth responses suggested that the rates ofmanure and inorganic fertilizers applied in this study arenot sufcient to improve young oil palm growth inmarginal soil in Jonggol.Keywords: cow manure, critical nutrient level, inorganicfertilizer, soil fertility, vegetative growt
Irrigation Volume Based on Pan Evaporation and Their Effects on Water Use Efficiency and Yield of Hydroponically Grown Chilli
This study was conducted to determine irrigation volume based on pan evaporation and their effects on growth, yield, irrigation water use efficency (IWUE) of chilli grown in sandponic system in the greenhouse. The amount of water used was based on pan evaporation. Irrigation treatments consisted of four coefficients, i.e. 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2 Epan. Plants were watered daily until soil reached field capacity during the first week. Irrigation treatments were applied on the second week until four months later. Total irrigation quantities varied from 9.4 to 37.8 L. plant-1. Chilli fruit yield varied from 3.98 to 90.51 g.plant-1. The highest total fruit yield and IWUE was obtained from 2 Epan treatment. Irrigation treatment had significant effects (P<0.01) on yield and there were positive linear relations between the yield and the amount of irrigation water applied. Evaluation of Commercial Sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) Cultivars in Bogor, Indonesia for Ornamental and Nursery Production
A wide range of imported ornamental sunflower seeds have been marketed in Indonesia. A field evaluation was conducted on seven sunflower cultivars to investigate their germination, growth and development in humid tropical environment in Bogor, West Java, Indonesia and to determine their potential uses. Most of the tested cultivars, except for ‘Sungold Double’ and ‘Velvet Queen’, demonstrated good germination and growth. ‘Eclipse’ was highly susceptible to stem rot, which resulted in only 30% of the plants survived. ‘Little Leo’, ‘Teddy Bear’ and ‘Sungold Double’ were naturally compact, dwarf, and produced attractive blooms so they might be suitable as pot plants. ‘Hallo’, ‘Velvet Queen’, ‘Sunburst’, and ‘Eclipse’s plant height were more than 100 cm, had long stem and large blooms. Tropical and Subtropical Fruits in India
India is the second largest producer of fruits in the world with an annual production of 81.2 million tonnes contributing 12.6% of world fruit production next only to China (21.2%). Of late, with growing population and realization of commercial and nutritional values, the demand and requirement for fruits has increased manifold globally and so is in India. Since then, India has managed a steady growth in area expansion and production of fruits. Even in 2012-2013, increase in area and production of fruits in India was 4.1 and 6.4 times over 2011-2012 Of these, tropical and subtropical fruits contribute a major share, and the important fruits are mango, banana, papaya, citrus, guava, pineapple, litchi, sapota and pomegranate. Among the minor fruits (less area in cultivation than the major fruits) are jackfruit, bael, aonla, carambola, syzygiums, passion fruit and tamarind are also growing in many states of India
Heliconia Society Cultivar Registration
The Heliconia Society International (HSI, website: www.heliconia.org) is a non-prot corporation formed in 1985 because of rapidly developing interest around the world in these plants and their close relatives.The purpose of HSI is to increase the enjoyment and understanding of Heliconia and related plants (in the families Cannaceae, Costaceae, Lowiaceae, Marantaceae, Strelitziaceae, and Zingiberaceae) of the order Zingiberales through education, research and communication. Interest in Zingiberales and information on the cultivation and botany of these plants is rapidly increasing. HSI will centralize this information and distribute it to members
Different Growth Partitioning and Shoot Production of Talinum triangulare Treated with Organic and Inorganic Fertilizer
Talinum triangulare or waterleaf is an underutilized tropical plant, mostly found as weeds, and has been used more as medicinal plant than as vegetable in Indonesia. The study of Talinum triangulare cultivation has been explored to increase the shoot production as functional vegetables. The effects of organic fertilizer applications at 0.50, 0.75, 1.00, 1.25 and 1.50 of the standard rate on waterleaf growth were tested in a Leuwikopo research station, Bogor, West Java, Indonesia. Standard rate of organic fertilizer consisted of 12.3 t..ha-1 of cow manure, 226.8 kg. .ha-1 of guano, and 5.5 t.ha-1 of rice hull ash that is equal to 100 kg urea, 60 kg SP-36 and 100 kg KCl.ha-1. Net assimilation rate (NAR) of the organic fertilizer-treated plants was lower than the inorganic fertilizer-treated with plant at two to four weeks after planting (WAP). However, the plants treated with 0.75-1.25 organic fertilizer had a higher NAR than those treated with inorganic fertilizer at four to six WAP. Plants treated with 0.75 rate of organic fertilizer had similar relative growth rate (RGR) to plants treated with the inorganic fertilizer at two to four WAP, whereas plants treated with 1.00, 1.25 and 1.50 standard rate had higher RGR than plants treated with inorganic fertilizer at 4-6 WAP. Plants treated with 1.50 organic fertilizer rate had 34.55% more marketable shoots compared to those treated with inorganic fertilizer whereas those treated with 0.50 rate of organic fertilizer had 179.54% at 6 WAP. The Physiological Dormancy and Germination Responses of Brunonia australis and Rhodanthe floribunda to Gibberellic Acid Treatment
Brunonia australis (Goodeniaceae) and Rhodanthefloribunda (Asteraceae) are two potential Australiannative ower species desired by oricultural markets.However, the species are difcult to propagate. Thisstudy examined internal factors that constraint seedgermination, seed viability and physiological dormancy.The study was conducted during April to May 2009 at theGatton nursery, The University of Queensland GattonCampus to identify the underlying reasons for poorgermination and to provide recommendations forimproving propagation effectiveness. Seeds of B.australis collected in 2003 germinated readilyirrespective of germination media, whereas seedscollected in 2007 and 2008 with high proportion of viableseeds could only germinate with the presence of GA3(100 mg.L ) in germination media though with relatively -1low rates (8.75% and 10.00% respectively) of seedgermination. Seeds of R. floribunda collected in 2003showed a signicant improvement in germination inagar media supplemented with 100 mg.L GA (67.5%) -13 compared to control treatment (10.0%). The resultssuggest that physiological dormancy occurs in bothspecies. The use of GA is recommended for improving 3germination rates of the two species.
