THE EFFECT OF A PERINATAL EXERCISE COUNSELLING INTERVENTION ON DEPRESSIVE SYMPTOMS

    No full text
Perinatal depression is affecting approximately 16% of pregnant and 20% of postpartum women. Regular perinatal Physical Activity (PA) is considered a preventive factor for perinatal depressive symptoms. The primary aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of an Exercise Counselling (EC) intervention compared to Perinatal Wellbeing Education (PWE) on depressive symptoms of perinatal individuals recruited via obstetric care practices. Secondary aim was to examine the intervention’s outcomes on anxiety levels and sleep quality. Twenty-five women were randomly assigned to the EC group (N = 12) or the PWE group (N = 13). Participants were provided with accelerometer devices to record their daily PA. Standardized questionnaires were administered at pre-, mid-, and post-intervention. The EC group reported significant improvements in symptoms of depression at mid- and post-intervention compared to the PWE group. Anxiety symptoms were significantly lower for both mid- and post intervention, while sleeping difficulties were significantly lower for the EC group compared to the PWE group, but only at mid-intervention. Participants’ total weekly PA was similar between the study groups at all measurement points. However, the EC group engaged in significantly more minutes of moderate intensity PA and recreational PA at mid- and post-intervention. The implemented EC intervention was beneficial for alleviating depressive symptoms, as well as decreasing anxiety levels and sleep disturbances. Randomized controlled trials with follow-up measurements are needed to ascertain these findings

The Comparative Cat and How to Translate it – A Comparative Children’s Literature and Literary Animal Studies Approach

    No full text
Literary animals appear very often in traditional fairy tales and modern literary texts and animal character's proper names have – almost every time – a deliberate meaning. Τheir translation usually interacts with common words and, in the case of Children's Literature probably with images in illustrated books or animated films. Literary cats in The Story of a Seagull and the Cat Who Taught Her to Fly by Luis Sepulveda in the original Spanish edition La Historia de una gaviota y del gato que le enseñó a volar(1996) and its translation in Modern Greek edition Η ιστορία ενός γάτου που έμαθε σ’ένα γλάρο να πετάει (2008), translated by Achilleas Kyriakidis, are literary animals created by words in two different languages and could be analyzed from a Comparative Children’s Literature perspective. The article will provide an interdisciplinary Literary Animal Studies and Comparative Children’s Literature theoretical and methodological approach to how interlingual literary cat character proper names translation from Spanish to Modern Greek could establish a young reader's inter-semiotic conception of the character of a literary cat

Μεταφρασιμότητα της ευρωπαϊκής ταυτότητας σε θεατρικό μεταμοντέρνο λόγο : Κύκλοι/ Ιστορίες του Joël Pommerat

    No full text
The French playwright Joël Pommerat (1963-), a follower of Peter Brook, has a presence in Greek theatrical events through his performances at the House of Letters and Arts and at the Art Theater. Through his works, he has been characterized as a humanist artist, taking into account the situations he creates, through political-social criteria, forming the so-called modern and "renewed political theater". His work Circles / Stories refers to the "recapitulation" of the narrative of European History from the Middle Ages to the present day. Ideologies emerge in the work, which underline the end of an era with a weak background in the ethics of solidarity as it has evolved and is still experienced by Europe. Through the flashback technique, point systems are created that underline probabilities and sequences and project the evolution towards the new world, which promises the European vision. The present study refers to issues of transability by  the science of semiotics and the semiotics of theater with the main reference to the multiplicity of work of Umberto Eco, with the book Opera Aperta and the term intertextuality of Kristeva Julia as an alternative semiotic system. Methods followed and concepts and terms by Algirdas Julien Greimas are also examined, as well as other semiologists such as Anne Ubersfeld and Patrice Pavis were examined

Contribution to the molecular taxonomy of mastic tree morphotypes on Chios Island

    No full text
Background: The mastic tree (formal name: Pistacia lentiscus var. Chia) is extensively cultivated on the southern part of the Greek island of Chios. Its extensive cultivation is due to the production of a special resin, known as mastic gum, or mastiha, which is widely used in several dietary, pharmaceutical and other products since ancient times. Mastic tree is an evergreen, dioecious (consisting of male and female individuals), woody plant. Furthermore, a number of morphological characteristics suggest the existence of several different plant groups, called here “morpho-varieties”, but it is probable that there exist an unknown number of different, deviating genotypes on the island. Nevertheless, five major morphologically determined morpho-varieties of mastic tree are mainly cultivated, namely “Votomos”, “Maroulitis”, “Mavroschinos”, “Stenophyllos” and “Fardyphyllos”. The morpho-varieties exhibit mostly, but not always, distinct morphology, on which their taxonomy was initially based. Since it is observed that different plant populations differ in the quantity and quality of the produced resin, it is important to explore whether these differences have a genetic basis, or are due to other factors, such as agricultural practices, or soil composition. To this end, the genetic diversity among these five morpho-varieties and within each one of them was investigated in the present study, using in a first approximation their Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA profiles and subsequently the sequence divergence of their Internal Transcribed Spacer regions 1 and 2.Results: The results confirm the existence of a considerable genotypic diversity among the five morpho-varieties studied and, furthermore, reveal the existence of genotypic diversity within each one of them, as well as the existence of a number of further deviating genotypes. The possibility, this diversity to be partly a result of reticulate evolution events is also discussed. Conclusions: This study provides evidence that the population of cultivated mastic trees on the island of Chios consists mainly of two species, i.e. Pistacia lentiscus and Pistacia x saportae, although it is clear that there also exist genetically deviating mastic trees, as well as individual plants, probably produced through hybridization between the two afore mentioned species

Θεραπεία του μελωδικού επιτονισμού: Μετάφραση και προσαρμογή στην ελληνική γλώσσα

The sciences of speech therapy, neurology, and neurolinguistics are looking for non-invasive and effective methods to improve patients’ language abilities. One of the most well-known and widely accepted methods of language intervention is the Melodic Intonation Therapy (MIT). MIT is based on the prosodic cues of intonation and rhythm and was originally created to address the verbal difficulty of English-speaking patients with Broca aphasia. Despite the fact that MIT has been translated into and adapted to several languages and many positive effects for patients have been reported, in Greece, it is almost unknown. The current study includes a full description of the Greek translation of MIT and its adaptation to the Greek culture, in order to place in the quiver of each clinic one more non-invasive method for the improvement of the patients’ language skills

Investigating teacher beliefs, attitudes and practices regarding the inclusion of refugee and immigrant students in Greek state schools

    No full text
This paper presents data on the beliefs, attitudes, and reported practices of state school teachers concerning the education of immigrant/refugee children. Teachers’ beliefs are generally considered to exert an important influence on their professional practices, while relevant findings in recent research appear contradictory. The 56 informants participated in online seminars organized by the information service “Me 2 Glosses” and the Prefectural Directorate of Education of Epirus in 2020–2021. Upon completion of the seminars, an online questionnaire was administered which included questions on the use and maintenance of heritage languages, bilingual profile, academic differences between monolingual and bilingual students and teaching practices supporting bilingualism. Teachers’ answers indicate that their efforts to support immigrant/refugee students focus on the development of their linguistic skills in Greek. However, the results also indicate a lack of awareness regarding the importance of acknowledging those students’ heritage language and culture; such practices would be clear indicators of teachers’ accepting their students’ diversity

Of Powdered Milk and Empowered Memories: Relief Worker Charles Schermerhorn in Northern Greece, 1946-1951

    No full text
Christina Dokou provided the eloquent testimony of her mother, who as a young girl growing up in a small village in northern Greece, benefited from the postwar food distributions made by American relief missions. But where do we find the direct mirror image of that American food aid—the logistical side of the milk distributions? Through fortuitous circumstances, the memoir of American social worker Charles Maxton Schermerhorn (1901-1986) has been preserved. He arrived in Greece on 17 May 1946, at a critical time: Greece had been liberated from a brutal Nazi German Occupation and was about to descend into a devastating Civil War (1946-1949). Charles was appointed by UNNRA (United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration), subsequently by the Near East Foundation, and eventually by UNICEF. In five years, he saw intense American logistical planning for Greece, which became a hotbed of Cold War polarization.  Charles’ own appointment as an UNRRA child welfare specialist (and regional supervisor), and later as the person responsible for milk distributions to northern Greek villages, attests to a Western-imported humanitarian model that had to serve as an antidote to the rise of Soviet-style communism in the Balkans. Charles focused primarily on children in need, and his commitment penetrated the world of the young “Toula” Dokou, whose village fell under Charles’ purview. This article then provides background information to Mrs Dokou’s testimony, and presents, for the first time, relevant extracts from Charles’ hitherto unpublished memoir

Commemoration of the First Russian Saints, Boris and Gleb, in Serbian and Bulgarian Manuscripts

    No full text
Saints Boris and Gleb, the first Russian saints recognised by Byzantium were canonised in the 11th century. Soon after their canonisation, Sts Boris and Gleb began to be honoured outside of Russia. Between 1120 and 1122, a church devoted to them was built in Byzantium. Particles of their relics were transferred to the Sazavsky monastery in the Czech Republic (1094–1095In the Sourozh Greek Prologue for July 24th, there is a commemoration of the “holy newly appeared martyrs in the lands of the Rus”. In the “Tale of the Saints’ Sites in Constantinople”, Anthony Novgorodsky (1200) mentions the icon of Sts Boris and Gleb in Constantinople and the church dedicated to Sts Boris and Gleb “in Ispigas Grad”. The first service for Sts Boris and Gleb was composed in the 11th century. It was created in Greek but it was immediately translated. (We do not have any manuscript containing a Greek version.) The veneration of the new Russian saints spread beyond Russia, so we can see appearances of their commemoration in Serbian and Bulgarian manuscripts. This paper is devoted to the analysis of Serbian and Bulgarian manuscripts that contain their commemoration

PSYCHOMETRIC PROPERTIES Of THE VOLITIONAL COMPONENTS INVENTORY IN A GREEK UNIVERSITY SAMPLE AND IN A GERMAN GENERAL POPULATION SAMPLE

    No full text
The manuscript reports two independent studies that aimed at evaluating the short version of the Volitional Components Inventory (VCI-short), which measures volitional competencies, namely self-regulation, self-control, volitional efficiency, self-access, and general life stress, in two cultural contexts ̶ Greece and Germany. The Greek sample comprised university students whereas the German sample comprised adults. Convergent and divergent validity were examined through the correlation of volitional competences with neuroticism, conscientiousness, general and academic procrastination in the Greek sample, and action control and psychopathology in the German. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were used to test the factorial validity of the scale. In both studies, five factors were confirmed. The five factors were reliable (Cronbach’s alpha ranging from .78 to .89 in the Greek sample and .84 to .91 in the German sample). With regards to validity, in the Greek sample there were negative correlations between volitional competences, except from general life stress, and neuroticism, general procrastination, and academic procrastination; there were positive correlations of volitional competences with conscientiousness (except for general life stress). In the German sample, volitional competences were positively related with action orientation, whereas they were negatively related to general life stress

Reconfigurer « Hansel et Gretel » pour la scène : enjeux esthétiques et idéologiques de la transposition théâtrale contemporaine

    No full text
The article examines four contemporary plays for young people that revisit and update the Grimm's fairy tale "Hansel and Gretel". These singular reconfigurations deserve attention for their aesthetic and ideological options. The dramaturgies implemented by the different authors rely on the violent substratum of the source tale to question situations of family and social tensions, which can be given a socio-poetic reading. The article examines four contemporary plays for young people that revisit and update the Grimm's fairy tale "Hansel and Gretel".
