    No full text
The present work aims to utilise the textual data of the translation process, which can contribute to the reconstruction of the environment of an area. The case study presented includes the interlinguistic translation of two originals (one from Italian to Greek and one from English to Greek), their documentation, commentary, as well as their textual and geocultural analysis. The study is interdisciplinary in nature, demonstrating the value of translation and the usefulness of the geocultural approach in the production of textual data that can be further used as a source for reconstructing the environment by researchers in scientific fields such as environmental history, bio-ecology, forestry, agronomy, botanic, ecology

The Soviet Regime and the Question of the All-Russian Constituent Assembly. The Viewpoint of a Greek Diplomat (November 1917 – January 1918) The first months of the existence of the soviet regime constitute an important period in the history of modern Russia, given the formation of several key features of the structural framework upon which the Soviet Union was eventually founded. One of the most contentious issues revolves around the dissolution of the All-Russian Constituent Assembly by the Bolshevik-controlled soviet authorities. The way that this question was perceived by foreign diplomats stationed at the Russian capital is significant, being one of the factors that moulded, into an extent, the views of the international community about the nascent of the soviet state. In this context, by making use of hitherto unpublished documents deposited in the historical archive of the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs, this paper brings to light the eye-witness account and assessments of Dimitrios Kaklamanos, Greece’s Minister in Russia. Kaklamanos believed that the radical socialist Bolshevik soviet regime did not represent the great majority of society, lacked all semblance of legality, and remained in power by unleashing a reign of terror. However, the ‘moderate’ Socialist Revolutionary Party, having prevailed in the Constituent Assembly elections, peacefully strived to establish the latter as the supreme representative institution and source of legitimate political power in Russia. According to the Greek diplomat, responding to this challenge, in January 1918, in the name of the Soviets the Bolsheviks arbitrarily disbanded the Constituent Assembly through the employment of coercive means, whilst justifying their action on the basis of the controversial theory of the dictatorship of the proletariat. Nevertheless, Kaklamanos and other foreign diplomats, essentially treated the question of the Constituent Assembly by placing emphasis on matters of practical concern, such as the attitude of the antibolshevik opposition with regard to Russia’s foreign policy

Principlism And Aristotelean Virtue Ethics Are Not Mutually Exclusive

    No full text
The final aim of this commentary is to highlight the role of Aristotle’s model of virtue ethics as an approach of the modern bioethical dilemmas. Ultimately, and most importantly, it should be highlighted that virtue ethics and principlism are not mutually exclusive. In my opinion, this consideration must inform what we call “medical Ethos” referring to the spirit of the medical culture that is underpinning medical practice and professional ethics

PSYCHOMETRIC PROPERTIES OF THE CATALAN VERSION OF THE GOLDBERG ANXIETY AND DEPRESSION SCALE (GADS)

    No full text
This study aimed to test the psychometric properties of the Goldberg Anxiety and Depression Scale (GADS), applied to a Catalan sample of the adult general population. The scale was translated and adapted to the Catalan language. The sample comprised 741 participants of both sexes. The sample was split randomly into two groups: calibration and validation. Structural validity was analysed in the calibration group (n = 371), using exploratory factor analysis, suggesting a one-factor structure. Confirmatory factor analysis was performed with the validation group (n = 370). The one-factor model demonstrated adequate goodness of fit indices and satisfactory internal consistency. The two-factor model presented only acceptable goodness of fit indices and internal consistency, but the discriminant capacity was low. The obtained results support the use of the GADS as an acceptable instrument to measure anxiety and depression in the Catalan population, but not to distinguish between these two conditions

An Early Source in Anastasius's Hexaemeron

    No full text
The Hexaemeron of Anastasius of Sinai incorporates a wealth of patristic material from the first to seventh centuries, often with explicit (if unreliable) citations, often without parallel, and often at second hand. Within this work, a single lost intermediary can be clearly discerned as the source for most of what pertains to the first three centuries. It provided readings from Origen’s Hexapla and citations of Philo, Papias, Irenaeus, and Clement, while denouncing the Ophites and Manichaeans. It also provided the foundation for the Hexaemeron’s overarching exegetical thesis and probably much of its content. Traces of the same lost work appear in Eusebius of Emesa, John of Scythopolis, and Andrew of Caesarea. Various circumstantial evidence indicates authorship by Pierius of Alexandria

Research on the Griko minority language. Attitudes towards the language and suggestions for its revitalization.

    No full text
During this research, a questionnaire was distributed to the Griko-speaking villages of Apulia, in the Salento region of southern Italy. It presents the current situation regarding the use of the minority language Griko and the inhabitants' preferences. The article draws ideas and examples from the successful language policy of the Cornish minority language, a Celtic dialect of Cornwall that disappeared in the late 18th century but was recently revived and continues to rise steadily. Cornish is considered one of the most successful cases of reviving a forgotten language. Through the Cornish example, ideas can be drawn to support minority languages of similar demographic spread. The efforts to preserve a minority language are influenced by many factors and do not always lead to a successful outcome. The article's main purpose is to suggest ideas, for enhancing the use of the Griko minority language, that are applicable in the long term.  Additionally, special research on translation activity and direct writing in Griko concluded that they are both limited, and this also contributes to the inadequate support of this minority language

The use of fairytales as learning resources in the teaching of the French language in elementary education has a number of significant benefits on an educational, pedagogical, and cultural level, at the same time. This paper focuses on the utilization of fairytales as a text that can trigger production of written speech, and the realization of a workshop on creative writing in the FFL class. At the outset, we attempt to define what creative writing actually is and we go on to highlight the benefits of its implementation in primary schools. Next, we present the results and conclusions of exploratory empirical research conducted during the school year 2015–2016 involving sixth-grade students of three primary schools in the town of Serres. Consequently, the study data under analysis comprise the contents of the teacher logbook, the creations of the students before the phase of collective writing, and the answers to the questionnaire given to the students after their participation in the creative writing activities

Οι Κοκκινοσκουφίτσες των Pommerat, Grumberg, Akapko και Galea: Τέσσερις ηρωίδες που έζησαν καλύτερα

    No full text
The adaptations of Pommerat, Grumberg, Akapko and Galea capitalize on contemporary dramaturgical trends and renew the narrative of the precarious and fragile woman, positively reinterpreting the exit from the family/familiar towards the danger of life: their little red riding hoods live in single-parent families, or at grandma's, they don't wear the red cape, they are Jewish, or daughters of tired and lonely mothers, they are not afraid of the forest or the wolf (but a little more from their mom), they ask with courage, they speak with freedom, they take responsibility and action, and are not easily fooled, while wolves find it difficult to stand in the role of evil and some people turn out to be more dangerous than them, contributing to a new lesson that goes beyond moral teaching. Through our article, we will show how these four rewritings, linked to the tale, enrich the collective unconscious with new representations, bringing to light contemporary political issues, crucial for the transition to adulthood for young and old alike

Translating Feminism in Children’s Folk Tales – A Comparative Analysis of Two English Translations of Meng Jiangnü

    No full text
Children’s literature adapted or originating from folk tales serve as a unique access to the core social concepts of a country. This paper approaches feminist translation and adaptation of children’s literature through examining two English translations of a Chinese folktale, Meng Jiangnü for children at the reading age of 5 to 14 years. The illustrative case studies attempt to compare translations of some cultural constructs encompassing the naming practices, the “ku” (mourning) custom and the calabash (fertility) custom, that expose, foreground or impact gender and feminist consciousness, and demonstrate the basics and categories on the grounds of which the texts are established. Since the article embraces all the gender issues on social and cultural grounds, it analyses the texts in a descriptive manner and proposes four translational strategies including removing, weakening, preserving and strengthening. Through close observation of the adaptations or translations of folk tales for children, we are able to perceive the (un)conscious feminizing process by the translator, the rewriter or the editor though they are reluctant to be labelled as “feminists”
