Mild hypothermia protects against cerebral oxidative stress injury by regulating endoplasmic reticulum stress in rats after cardiopulmonary resuscitation
Oxidative stress injury (OSI) is involved in brain injury induced by cardiac arrest (CA)/cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS) is closely related to OSI. Mild hypothermia (MT) has been used to treat different kinds of brain injury but the mechanism remains unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the effects of MT on OSI in a rat model of CA/CPR and determine the relationship between MT and ERS. The rats were divided into the sham, non-hypothermia (NT), and MT groups, which were then each divided into two subgroups consisting of rats that were sacrificed at 4.5 h and 24 h after the return of spontaneous circulation, respectively (NT-4.5, NT-24, MT-4.5, and MT-24 subgroups) (n = 6). A CA/CPR model was established by asphyxiation in the NT and MT groups, and MT was administered to rats in the MT group. Roughly 73% (24/33) of the rats survived until the end of the study. Compared with the sham group, the neurological deficit score (NDS) decreased, and the OSI, apoptosis, water content increased after model establishment (p lower than 0.05). Compared with those in the NT-4.5 and NT-24 groups, rats in the MT-4.5 and MT-24 groups showed improved NDS (65.3 ± 5.1 vs. 52.8 ± 4.7; 59.7 ± 6.0 vs. 50.5 ± 5.4), lower MDA activity (4.7 ± 0.3 vs. 6.5 ± 0.6; 5.1 ± 0.4 vs. 7.7 ± 0.6) (nmol mg-1 protein), higher SOD (84.7 ± 5.2 vs. 67.4 ± 5.8; 73.9 ± 6.4 vs. 55.8 ± 4.1) (U mg-1 protein) and CAT activities (83.1 ± 6.9 vs. 77.2 ± 6.5; 71.9 ± 3.6 vs. 62.7 ± 4.9) (U mg-1 protein), lower water content (79.2 ± 1.1% vs. 80.6 ± 0.8%; 81.0 ± 0.9% vs. 83.7 ± 1.7%), and lower expression of the ERS-related proteins GRP78, CHOP, caspase-12, and cleaved-caspase-3 (p lower than 0.05). The results also showed that after the MT was stopped, the effects were maintained for a period of time. In conclusion, MT protected against brain injury induced by CA/CPR by decreasing OSI by inhibiting of ERS
The impact of cadmium exposure on cell parameters, expression of specific genes and mineralization in cultivated human osteoblasts
Cadmium (Cd) is a widespread environmental pollutant which negatively affects bone health. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of Cd exposure on cell parameters, expression of specific genes and mineralization in cultivated human osteoblasts. Osteoblasts were incubated without (control group) or with CdCl2 at final Cd concentrations of 0.1, 2, 5, 10, and 50 μM for 2, 4, 6 or 14 days. Cell viability, morphological changes, alkaline phosphatase activity, mineralization, and an expression of 10 genes associated with osteoblast-specific pathways, oxidative stress and cell death were determined. Osteoblast viability decreased at the highest Cd concentrations (5, 10 and 50 μM) after 4 days of treatment. Our findings specified the threshold of Cd exposure with morphological alterations to 5 μM Cd following 4 days of cultivation. Morphometric measurements revealed significantly decreased size of Cd-treated osteoblasts when compared to the control. The alkaline phosphatase activity was dose-dependent with a reduction at 5 μM Cd after 2 days. Cd concentration of 5 μM significantly down-regulated the expression of COL1A1, ALPL, BGLAP, and GPX1 genes. On the contrary, BAX and SOD1 genes were over-expressed at 0.1, 2, 5 μM Cd and TNFSF11 gene transcripts showed an increase at 0.1-2 μM Cd. No significant impact of Cd exposure on transcription levels of WNT5A, RUNX2, and CASP1 genes was detected. Cd at 0.1 μM stimulated the mineralization, while the dose of 1 μM Cd had no effect. In conclusion, Cd exposure had adverse impact on human osteoblasts viability, morphology and function. On molecular level, it was associated with bone matrix protein synthesis, bone remodelling, cell death, and response to oxidative stress. The lowest dose of Cd had the stimulatory effect on bone mineralization

What Exactly is Bulgarian Church Music? A current attempt to answer an apparently simple question
The question leads me back to my first fieldwork ever, I have done at Bačkovo Monastery (Rhodope Montains) in August 2002. There I got my first basics of psaltic chant thanks to the generosity of Otec Stiliyan, the tipikar of the monastery, and of Deniza Popova, a German-Bulgarian scholar whom I know, while we studied at the Humboldt-University and who visited Bačkovo for many years. When I returned in 2015, I found another Bulgaria and met young people at the church who opened a new world for me. With this paper I would like to try to answer this seemingly innocent question, and point at local Balkan traditions of the country which earn more scholarly attention, free from the usual and common preconceptions, also in response to current trends in ethnomusicological research which have changed the common perspectives considerably. The overview includes various traditions since Neofit Rilski’s educational reforms and the later foundation of the Bulgarian state and various new approaches to look at the history of Slavonic chant in the territory of the current state Bulgaria
Songs for Voice and Piano of Greek Composers of the 19th and the Beginning of the 20th Century
During the 19th century, Greek Art Music flourished mainly in the Ionian Islands. The Ionian Islands (Eptanisa) were the only part of Greece that didn’t come under Ottoman occupation. Instead, it successively was under Venezian (1386-1797), French (1797-1800 and 1807-1814), Russian-Turkish (1800-1807), and English rule (1814-1864). In 1864 the Ionian Islands were united with the liberated mainland Greece. Due to these historical circumstances, music in the Ionian Islands was influenced by musical development, mainly in Italy and the rest of Western Europe. Most of the Eptanisian composers studied in Italy, and many emigrated to Athens after 1864. Regarding mainland Greece, after the fall of Constantinople in 1453 and until the beginning of the 19th century, most of Greece was under Ottoman rule. The circumstances of slavery left no chance for cultural interaction with Western Europe. The Greek War of Independence of 1821 was the beginning of the gradual liberation of Greece and its connection with the West-European culture. Due to these historical circumstances, the Greek National School of Music flourished at the beginning of the 20th century. Almost all Greek composers of the 19th and 20th century composed songs for voice and piano, setting into music mostly Greek poems of well-known poets. In this study, Art songs of Eptanisian composers andthe Greek National School of Music will be examined. In the first songs, the national element is occasionally used whereas, in the later songs, folk-like melodies, meters, and modes of the Greek folk songs are used
Πολιτικός λόγος και ιδεολογία: Τα χαρακτηριστικά του κύριου άρθρου στην κομματική σχολιογραφία
Abstract This paper focuses on the textual characteristics of the main article (editorial) of Greek newspapers in the context of commenting on political parties, by using as a theoretical framework the Critical Discourse Analysis. Based on this approach, the contextual, ideological and semantic context of the main article of a paper supporting a specific party is examined, and in particular, its linguistic context (titles), its organizational structure and lexicographical characteristics, as well as the specific strategies used for promoting the ideological positions of the newspaper, ‘Rizospastis’. This study highlights the similarities between the main article of publications supporting or not a specific party, as they are summarized in their macroeconomic characteristics, such as the title, the presentation of an issue, the appearance of arguments and the formulation of a certain position. Similarly, the particular features of comments on political parties are also highlighted, according to which the main article functions more as a militarized political text than as a commentary of discourse
The textbooks of Modern Greek Language are the teaching basis for the course in all the classes of the High school. They include a variety of topics which cover almost all aspects of greek life and culture. This paper deals with the way racism is presented through unit 3 of the school textbook of Modern Greek Language in the third grade of lower secondary education (C’ Gymnasiou) through the images relating to the main verbal texts. The individual parts of the present paper are the theoretical framework, the methodology, the main analysis through suggesting examples and the researching conclusions
