Efficacy of cryolipolysis and cryolipolysis/physical exercise combination on abdominal fat and lipid profile in overweight women of reproductive age: a feasibility study

    No full text
Background: Adipose tissue is a special type of connective tissue dominated by adipocytes. Weight loss results in the removal of only a percentage of local excess fat; the latter could be treated with methods such as physical exercise and cryolipolysis. Aim: To investigate the effect of cryolipolysis (CL) and the combination of cryolipolysis and physical exercise (CL + PE) on localized abdominal adipose tissue and lipid profile in overweight adult women.Materials and Methods: Overweight women of reproductive age (n=16) without other health problems, assigned into CL and CL + PE groups. They were subjected to either CL for subcutaneous adipose tissue reduction (exclusively in the abdominal area) or a combination of CL and PE (specific exercise program focused on abdominal muscles). Somatometric parameters were recorded and lipid profiles were measured at baseline and three months for after the interventions. All women were asked to maintain their usual dietary habits throughout the study. Results: Both interventions resulted in statistically significant improvements p0.05) in somatometric parameters (waist, abdominal and hip circumference) with no difference between them; no changes were apparent in the lipid profile before and after the interventions. Conclusions: A single application of CL results in reductions in waist, abdominal and hip circumferences. The addition of a specific PE program focused on abdominal muscles does not result in additional improvement. The reduction in the waist, abdominal and hip circumferences is not accompanied by increases in the serum lipid concentrations. Further studies are needed to elucidate the long-term effects of CL on abdominal adipose tissue.

Which turn to take? Teachers’ Use of Translanguaging in Foreign Language Classrooms

    No full text
Pedagogical translanguaging, the planned, deliberate, and flexible use of two or more languages in the same lesson, is a highly recommended practice in the foreign language (L2) classroom, but thus far there are no quantitative empirical studies supporting translanguaging behavior. To analyze the use of translanguaging, the present study analyzed L2 classroom interaction in 39 lessons in 2594 pairs of teacher questions and student answers, zooming in on the trade-off between (a) getting an answer and (b) getting an answer in the L2. A cluster analysis identified four types of lessons: (1) mainly L2 - low L2 response, (2) mainly L2 - high L2 response, (3) mainly L1 - low L2 response and (4) L2-L1 translanguagers – moderately high L2 response. Comparing cluster (1) in which teachers spoke English exclusively and students gave minimal responses in the L2 to cluster (2) in which teacher also used English exclusively but obtained high levels of L2 response from the learners, reveals mixed outcomes when teachers adopt a monolingual stance (L2 only as the language of instruction). Lessons in cluster 4, the “translanguagers,” reveal a significantly higher level of student responsiveness. This implies that teachers who ask many questions in the L2, but receive few answers, may increase students’ active classroom participation by adopting pedagogical translanguaging. A possible interpretation of the outcomes of this study is that using the foreign language as the language of instruction and pedagogical translanguaging are complementary, rather than competing, strategies in a language teacher’s repertoire.   Keywords: interaction, translanguaging, time-series analyses, teaching-learning process, heuristic

Network Science Approaches to Education Research

    No full text
AbstractIn the United States, the Interstate Teacher Assessment Consortium (InTASC) Standards andEducation can be generally defined as a process of receiving and providing systematicinstruction, and it embodies the verbal and nonverbal networks that the stakeholders (e.g.,teachers and students) co-construct. Recent years witness an increasing interest inemploying network science approaches to explore the interconnected and non-lineardevelopmental process of education. The current review starts with a brief discussion on thenature of the educational data and proceeds with an introduction to network science history.Relevant network analysis approaches and terminologies are synthesized. Three case studiesin Singapore are used to demonstrate how network science approaches can be employed toconceptualize daily educational issues. The findings of the three studies with network scienceapproaches (e.g., motifs detection) may offer educators, researchers, and policymakers novelinsights into better pedagogy and strategies for learning face-to-face or online. Keywords: network analysis, dynamic motif detection, teacher-student interaction, peer-interaction onlin

Complex Dynamic Systems and Language Education: A Sampling of Current Research – Editorial

    No full text
It has been twenty-five years since second language acquisition/development researchers and practitioners were introduced to chaos/complexity theory and its systems (variously referred to in our field as “complex systems,” complex adaptive systems,” and “complex dynamic systems”) (Larsen-Freeman, 1997). Unsurprisingly, the uptake of the new ideas was nonlinear. When they did attract a growing number of scholars, almost all of the research reports were descriptive—pointing out how language—its evolution, its use, its learning, and its teaching—were all complex, dynamic, nonlinear, emergent, feedback-sensitive, self-organizing, initial condition-sensitive, open, adaptive systems. In addition to these characteristics, because language is comprised of many interacting components and can be characterized by a number of scale-free power laws, such as Zipfian distributions, it indeed qualifies as a complex system

Advisory Board Decision Making as Collective Identity Exploration

    No full text
Whereas models of consensus decision making emphasize a linear multi-phase process, situated perspectives highlight the dynamic relations between individuals, contexts, andidentities. We examine the role of identity components and processes to understandconsensus decision making in a community advisory board. By viewing the process as one ofcollective identity exploration that embodies principles of complex dynamic systems, weexplore how a focal dilemma of generating a theme for a community Science, Technology,Engineering, Art, and Mathematics (STEAM) challenge elicited iterative cycles of identitydiscovery, prioritization, and negotiation. While exploring the identity of the group and thecommunity at-large, board members’ deliberations included incremental andtransformational dialogue that led to the spontaneous, abrupt emergence of a final decision. The study connects situated perspectives on identity with principles of complex systems andfinds that the social context acts as a control parameter to shape the salience and alignmentof various identity components. Keywords: complex systems, advisory boards, decision making, identity, STEMeducation

Formative Fugues: Reconceptualizing Formative Feedback for Complex Systems Learning Environments

    No full text
The Next Generation Science Standards and the National Research Council recognizesystems thinking as an essential skill to address the global challenges of the 21st century. Butthe habits of mind needed to understand complex systems are not readily learned throughtraditional approaches. Recently large-scale interactive multi-user immersive simulations arebeing used to expose the learners to diverse topics that emulate real-world complex systemsphenomena. These modern-day mixed reality simulations are unique in that the learners arean integral part of the evolving dynamics. The decisions they make and the actions thatfollow, collectively impact the simulated complex system, much like any real-world complexsystem. But the learners have difficulty understanding these coupled complex systemsprocesses, and often get “lost” or “stuck,” and need help navigating the problem space.Formative feedback is the traditional way educators support learners during problem solving.Traditional goal-based and learner-centered approaches don’t scale well to environments thatallow learners to explore multiple goals or solutions, and multiple solution paths(Mallavarapu Lyons, 2020). In this work, we reconceptualize formative feedback forcomplex systems-based learning environments, formative fugues, (a term derived from musicby Reitman, 1964) to allow learners to make informed decisions about their own explorationpaths. We discuss a novel computational approach that employs causal inference and patternmatching to characterize the exploration paths of prior learners and generate situationallyrelevant formative feedback. We extract formative fugues from the data collected from anecological complex systems simulation installed at a museum. The extracted feedback doesnot presume the goals of the learners, but helps the learners understand what choices andevents led to the current state of the problem space, and what paths forward are possible. Weconclude with a discussion of implications of using formative fugues for complex systemseducation. Keywords: complex systems education, computational formative feedback, interactivedigital exhibits, participatory exhibits, causal modelling complex systems

The paper is a brief presentation of the relationship between the sciences of Semiotics and Hermeneutics of biblical texts and verification of the possibility of their successful collaboration. It clarifies the limits and terms of using semiotic analysis as an interpretive method of the Bible. It highlights the advantages offered by the modern and post-modern versions of Semiotics in understanding the message and its production from the texts of the Bible. There is reference to the actions developed in the Department of Social Theology and Christian Culture of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) based on the utilization of semiotic theory in the interpretation of biblical texts, which are mainly the following two: a) The educational seminar "Semiotics and the Bible," which develops issues of applying the semiotic theory to the texts of the Bible, with the aim of its interpretative understanding with modern ways of approaching its meaning. The seminar is organized by the Biblical Studies Laboratory of the Department of Social Theology and Christian Culture AUTH and is conducted in collaboration with the Center for the Analysis of Religious Discourse (C.A.D.I.R.) of the Catholic University of Lyon and with the Semiotics Laboratory SemioLab of the Faculty of Philosophy of AUTH. And, b) The summer elective course "Semiotics and the Bible," which is included in the undergraduate curriculum of the Department of Social Theology and Christian Culture of AUTH and considers the semiotic analysis of biblical texts, defining the epistemological frameworks within which it can be conducted
