The Discourse of Transgender Activists for Social Change
Τέλος, οι δράσεις στοχεύουν στην ενδυνάμωση των μελών της κοινότητας μέσω της αυτοβοήθειας και της αλληλεγγύης,The aim of the present study is to explore the discourse of transgender activists in Greece and their opinions about activism, the difficulties they face in their daily life and their actions that aim for the transgender social movement to bring social change. This study follows a qualitative approach and was conducted through semi-structured interviews with eight participants (n = 8), six of whom were identified as women, one as man and one as agender. Thematic analysis highlighted the reasons why transgender activists engage in collective action as well as their claims and actions. Three core motives for collective action were identified, namely, the oppression that transgender people face due to traditional gender identities, as well as the discrimination they face in core aspects of daily life, such as access to accommodation, employment, and healthcare. Finally, the stigmatization of the transgender community which includes the pathologization of trans identity. The actions of the transgender movement in Greece include institutional claims, such as reforms in the legal and educational system. The principal demand of transgender community in Greece was the legal recognition of gender identity, while other demands focused on acquiring heteronormative rights, such as adoption, marriage and the acquisition of a birth certificate without indication of sex. In addition, public actions involve raising awareness and community visibility through speeches, letters to institutions and participation in pride. Lastly, the actions aim to empower community members through self-help and solidarity in order for individuals to cope with the difficulties they face
Hypnosis reduces oxidative stress in patients before surgery, a randomized clinical trial
Background: Laparoscopic surgeries can cause anxiety and other stress-related disorders in patients preoperatively and postoperatively. Both sedative premeditations and complementary therapies such as hypnosis are currently used to relieve anxiety. In this study; we evaluated the effect of hypnotherapy on the alleviation of oxidative stress resulting from surgery. Methods: Ninety-nine patients hospitalized in the general surgery section of the hospital; who were candidates for laparoscopic cholecystectomy surgery participated in the study. Patients were randomly divided into three groups of 33 persons: without any preoperative intervention as a control group (C), with a premedication intervention group (PI), and with a preoperative hypnosis intervention group (HI). Prooxidant–antioxidant balance (PAB), as a marker for oxidative stress (OS), was measured. Results: There was no significant difference in mean age among groups. A significant decrease in OS was seen in the HI group in comparison to the C group, but not between the PI group and the C group. There was a significant decrease in oxidative stress in the HI group in comparison to the PI group. Conclusion: Our results show hypnosis has more effective in decreasing oxidative stress in patients compared to drug premedication. We can conclude that preoperative hypnosis could be applied as an adjuvant treatment for decreasing oxidative stress and anxiety
Contested Evidence: Patristic Proof Texts in Doctrinal Controversies in Twelfth-Century Constantinople
This article focuses on one aspect of the theological discourse in twelfth-century Constantinople: the use of Patristic proof texts. It discusses how three authors whose theological views were deemed heretical by the synod – Eustratios of Nicaea, Soterichos Panteugenos and Constantine of Corfu – sought to back up their positions through recourse to passages from the writings of Cyril of Alexandria, Andrew of Crete and John of Damascus. And it argues that the synod did not always find it easy to propose alternative interpretations of these passages
